A transistor uses an electrical input to control current. That control lets a circuit amplify a signal or switch it on and off—the two functions that made transistors foundational to modern electronics. The first successful transistor, demonstrated in 1947, was a delicate germanium device; later designs made transistor technology more practical to manufacture.
How does a transistor work?
A transistor is a semiconductor device in which an electrical input controls current. In an amplifier circuit, a small input can control a larger changing current, so the output reproduces the signal with greater strength. In a switching circuit, the input controls whether current flows in a way that represents an on or off state.

Think of the input as a control over a larger flow. The analogy is useful, but the transistor is not a mechanical valve: charge carriers and electrical fields within its semiconductor material produce the effect. The exact mechanism depends on the transistor’s design.

What made the first transistor work?
John Bardeen and Walter Brattain achieved transistor action on December 16, 1947, at Bell Labs. Their point-contact device used two closely spaced gold contacts resting on high-purity germanium. Applying a voltage at one contact modulated the current through the other, producing amplification. Bell Labs demonstrated the device to officials on December 23, then announced the invention publicly on June 30, 1948. The Computer History Museum’s account of the first transistor describes its construction and milestones.

The early point-contact transistor could amplify an input signal by up to 100 times, according to the Computer History Museum’s historical account. That figure describes this early device, not transistors in general. Its construction was mechanically delicate, an important limitation as researchers sought designs that could be made more reliably.
How transistor designs evolved
The transistor was not one fixed design. Researchers developed different structures to control current, while improvements in materials and manufacturing helped move the technology from laboratory demonstrations toward production.

From junction concept to manufacturable devices
William Shockley conceived the junction transistor in January 1948. Its three-layer arrangement made a different approach possible, but dependable production depended on advances in semiconductor purity and manufacturing. In 1951, Gordon Teal and Morgan Sparks developed grown-junction transistors using single-crystal germanium and successive dopants. The resulting devices surpassed the best point-contact transistors in performance, according to the Computer History Museum’s account of transistor commercialization.

Parallel work and the move to silicon
The history was not confined to one laboratory or a single pair of inventors. Herbert Mataré and Heinrich Welker obtained reproducible amplification in 1948; by mid-1949, thousands of their devices had been manufactured for the French telephone system. This parallel effort is documented in the Computer History Museum’s transistor timeline.
In January 1954, Bell Labs chemist Morris Tanenbaum fabricated a silicon transistor. Texas Instruments later made silicon transistors and announced them as in production and available for sale. Silicon’s operating characteristics helped it compete with germanium in practical applications. These milestones marked progress in materials and production, rather than a single moment when one material immediately replaced the other. The Computer History Museum’s account of the silicon age covers this transition.

Why did transistors change electronics?
Transistors gave circuits a semiconductor device that could control current for amplification and switching. The first point-contact device proved the principle, but its delicate construction was not a practical endpoint. Junction designs, improved semiconductor materials, and manufacturing advances created more workable paths to producing transistors. Later, the MOS transistor established another distinct way to control current.

Bell Labs’ 1948 announcement, reproduced in the Computer History Museum archive, captured the uncertainty and promise at the time: “Although the device is still in the laboratory stage, Bell scientists and engineers expect it may have far-reaching significance in electronics and electrical communication.” The announcement is dated July 1, 1948, in the archive.
