ChromeOS creates one ZIP archive; you can later open it to browse its contents or extract the files into a folder.
Create a ZIP archive in the Files app
- Open the Files app.
- In the left pane, open the location where the files or folder are stored.
- Select the folder or file you want to include. To select several separate files, hold Ctrl while selecting each one.
- Right-click the selected item or items and choose Zip.
ChromeOS creates a single ZIP file from the selection. Google documents this built-in workflow in its Chromebook Files instructions; a separate archive utility is not needed for this task.

Browse a ZIP or extract its contents
Choose based on what you need: open the archive to access an individual file, or extract it when you want the group in a folder.
Open and browse the archive
- In Files, double-click the ZIP file. Its contents appear in the left pane.
- Double-click an individual file in the archive to open it.
- When finished, you can choose Eject to remove the ZIP from the list of folders shown on the left.
Extract the files into a folder
Right-click the folder in the archive and choose Extract all. This puts the group of zipped files into a single folder.

ZIP and RAR support
Google lists both .zip and .rar among compressed file types supported on Chromebooks in its file-type compatibility information. The documented creation steps above make ZIP archives; that does not establish that the same workflow creates RAR files or supports every archive feature.
If extraction does not work
If a ZIP stored in Drive will not extract, moving a copy out of Drive and trying again is one possible check mentioned in a Chromebook Community discussion. This is community advice, not an official Google limitation or a confirmed cause in every case.

Google’s guide covers the basic ZIP and extraction workflow but does not specify archive size limits, compression ratios, encryption support, or behavior for every storage location. Those details should not be assumed from the basic Files steps.
