It depends on which PS4 you own. The original PS4 supports output up to 1080p, so it cannot deliver PS4 Pro’s 4K game output. A 1080p TV is a sensible fit for an original PS4; a 4K TV is most worthwhile with a PS4 Pro if you want supported 4K output—or if you will use the TV with other 4K devices.
Does your PS4 support 4K?
The original PS4’s official HDMI video modes are 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. It does not provide the Pro’s 4K game output, so buying a 4K TV will not make games from that console display at 4K. A 4K television can still show the console’s lower-resolution output, but the console remains the limit. PlayStation’s original PS4 FAQ lists the supported modes.

PS4 Pro supports 4K output for supported content. That does not mean every game renders internally at native 4K: the resolution and performance choices depend on the game. Sony also says older games without dedicated Pro features can output at 4K when used with a supported 4K TV and Premium High Speed HDMI cable. Check the games you actually play rather than assuming every title uses Pro hardware in the same way. Sony’s PS4 Pro FAQ explains the output requirements.

4K UHD is 3840×2160 pixels; 1080p Full HD is 1920×1080. The 4K image has four times as many pixels by calculation, but that difference only matters if the console, game, connection and display can use the higher resolution. It is not a promise that every game will look four times sharper.

A 4K TV is not required for PS4 Pro. Sony says Pro delivers 1080p for all PS4 games on HDTVs, and some supported titles can have higher or more stable frame rates on an HDTV. So if you already own a 1080p screen and value its current performance, keeping it is a valid choice. Sony’s September 7, 2016 PS4 Pro announcement describes this HDTV support.
4K and HDR are different decisions
Resolution describes image detail; HDR (high dynamic range) concerns how compatible content displays brightness and color. Sony said all PS4 systems support HDR imaging, but you need an HDR-compatible TV and a game or entertainment source that supports HDR to see it. A TV being 4K does not, by itself, establish that it supports HDR, and HDR does not mean a game is output at 4K. Verify both the TV’s specifications and the support for the content you use. Sony’s announcement covers HDR support across PS4 systems.

Choose by console and use
| Your situation | Practical choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS4, limited budget | A 1080p TV is sufficient for the console’s documented output. | Consider 4K only if other devices, streaming or future use justify the extra capability. |
| PS4 Pro, seeking its highest supported resolution | Consider a 4K TV. | Check Pro enhancements for your games, the TV’s supported input modes and the HDMI setup. 4K output does not prove native 4K rendering in every game. |
| PS4 Pro, satisfied with an existing HDTV | Keep using the 1080p TV; a 4K set is not mandatory. | Some supported titles may offer higher or more stable frame rates on HDTVs. |
| Any PS4, interested in HDR | Choose based on HDR support, not resolution alone. | Confirm the TV and the particular game or media both support HDR. |
Check the 4K connection before buying
- Confirm the console: identify whether you have the original PS4 or PS4 Pro. Only Pro supports the 4K output discussed here.
- Check the TV’s input specifications: verify that the HDMI input you plan to use supports the desired 4K mode. A mode may be unavailable if the connected display does not support it.
- Use a suitable cable: PlayStation’s 4K setup guide recommends Premium-certified HDMI cables; the Pro FAQ specifies a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for 2160p output with a supported 4K TV. Follow the guide’s setup directions for your display. PS4 Pro FAQ and PlayStation 4K setup guide.
- Check the game: look up whether the titles you play have Pro features and what those features do; console capability alone does not specify each game’s resolution or frame-rate behavior.
- Factor in the room and other sources: choose screen size for your seating distance and room, and consider whether the TV will also serve 4K streaming or other devices. PlayStation does not give one universal screen-size recommendation; room size, viewing distance and media type all matter.
So, which TV is worth buying?
For an original PS4, choose a 1080p TV if the priority is an affordable screen for that console. For a PS4 Pro, choose 4K if supported 4K output matters to you and the games, TV input and HDMI connection line up. If you already have a good HDTV, there is no need to replace it just to use Pro. In either case, treat HDR as a separate feature and buy a 4K TV for the broader devices and viewing you expect to use—not for a resolution the original PS4 cannot output.
