How to Write Better Prompts for AI Video Generators

Build clearer AI video prompts by describing the subject and action first, then adding only the camera, style, lighting, or sound cues your shot needs. Revise one element at a time and adapt to the model.

A good AI video prompt makes the intended subject and action easy to picture, then adds only the details that help shape the shot. Start with what is visible and what should move; refine the result one element at a time. The right balance varies by model, and a prompt guides a generator rather than guaranteeing an exact clip.

What should you include in an AI video prompt?

Use this as a flexible structure, not a required checklist:

Begin with the subject and the action that matters most. Add the environment and any movement that should be visible. Camera direction, lighting, style, and sound can help when they clarify the result, but adding every category to every prompt can make it harder to communicate the main idea.

For example: “Wide, eye-level shot of a red bicycle leaning against a rain-darkened brick wall in a quiet alley. The camera slowly tracks right as rainwater runs along the pavement; cool evening light, restrained documentary style.” This is an illustrative prompt, not a tested recipe: it specifies a subject, setting, camera move, environmental motion, lighting, and style.

Google DeepMind’s Veo 3 prompt guide suggests ingredients such as framing, camera motion, style, lighting, character, location, action, and dialogue. Its API documentation also discusses subject, action, composition, focus, and lens effects. Runway’s Gen-4 guide, by contrast, stresses simplicity. Treat these as model-specific starting points, not universal rules.

How do I write a good prompt for an AI video generator?

  1. Name the visible subject. Be specific enough to distinguish it: “a red bicycle” is more useful than “something.”
  2. State the action plainly. Describe what happens during the clip, not only what the opening frame looks like.
  3. Add the setting. Include the location or environment when it affects the shot.
  4. Choose helpful shot direction. Specify framing or camera movement if it matters to the idea.
  5. Add selective visual cues. Use lighting, style, or focus details to shape the look without crowding out the action.
  6. Generate, inspect, and revise. Change one important element at a time so you can see what the wording affects.

Runway’s text-to-video guide separates visual description—what is seen, where, and how it looks—from motion description—how the scene moves and behaves. That distinction is useful across workflows: make both clear when the model has to invent the scene and animate it.

How should I prompt image-to-video differently from text-to-video?

Text-to-video

Describe both the visual scene and what changes over time. The model needs enough information to establish the subject, setting, and look, as well as the action or motion. A consistent structure can make it easier to refine prompts across attempts.

Image-to-video

The image already establishes appearance and composition, including visible colors and lighting. Use the text mainly to describe the movement you want: what moves, how, and at what pace. Runway’s Gen-4 guidance says that repeating details already present in the image can reduce motion or produce unexpected results. That is specific to Runway Gen-4; other tools may respond differently.

How do I describe camera movement in an AI video prompt?

Name the framing or movement in direct language and connect it to the shot: for example, “wide, eye-level shot” or “the camera slowly tracks right.” Pair camera movement with the scene action only when both are important. If a clip feels static, first state the physical movement clearly—what moves, in which direction, and at what pace. If a camera angle or other component is missed, reinforce that particular component in a revised prompt rather than rewriting everything at once.

Can I prompt for sound, dialogue, and timing?

Some video models accept prompts for dialogue, sound effects, or ambient noise. Google’s Veo API guide describes audio cues, including quoted dialogue. Support and behavior depend on the selected model and workflow. In an API, some output settings are configured as parameters rather than requested in the prompt; check the documentation for the exact model and version before relying on a prompt to set them.

Why does my AI video prompt not work?

  • The action is unclear. Say what should move and how, rather than relying on a still-image description to imply motion.
  • Too many details compete. Keep the main subject and action prominent; add secondary details only when they serve the shot.
  • The text repeats the input image. For image-to-video in Runway Gen-4, prioritize movement instead of restating the image’s appearance.
  • The wording is negative or indirect. Runway advises simple positive descriptions for Gen-4 and warns that negative phrasing can produce unpredictable or opposite results in that model. Do not assume the same behavior across every generator.
  • The model missed one instruction. Make that component clearer and try again, changing one important element at a time.
  • A setting belongs in the interface or API. Duration, resolution, or other output controls may be parameters rather than prompt text, depending on the model and workflow.

Repeated generations can differ even with the same prompt. OpenAI’s Sora 2 Prompting Guide, dated March 12, 2026, makes that point and recommends iteration. The guide is marked archived and warns that it may describe outdated models or APIs, so verify current Sora documentation before using it for operational details.

How much detail should you use?

Follow the selected model’s current guidance, then test. Google’s Veo 3 guide encourages detailed ingredients and experimentation; Runway’s Gen-4 guide says its model “thrives on prompt simplicity.” Neither statement establishes a universal best prompt length or guarantees control. The reviewed vendor guides offer practical advice, not independent head-to-head tests showing that a particular template or detail level improves results across generators.

When comparing tools for a particular workflow, check whether they support the kind of input you need—text or an image—how they handle camera, style, and motion cues, whether they accept audio or dialogue prompts, and which settings are controlled outside the prompt. Confirm that documentation matches the current model version. The reviewed guides do not establish comparative quality or pricing, so they do not support ranking tools on those grounds.
