What to Do When an Online Course or Jobs Portal Won’t Load or Verify Your Account

Start by identifying where the process fails: the page may not load, sign-in may loop, a password may be rejected, or an email, code, CAPTCHA, or identity check may fail. Try low-risk browser and connection checks first, then follow the portal’s own recovery instructions. If the problem concerns course access, an application, or records, contact the school, training provider, employer, or agency that owns them—not just the sign-in service.

First, identify the kind of problem

“The portal won’t work” can describe several different failures, and the right next step depends on which one you see. Note the exact point where it stops and any error message before changing settings or repeatedly requesting codes.

  • Page will not load: the site is blank, times out, or shows a connection error before sign-in.
  • Login loop: you enter credentials but return to the sign-in page.
  • Credential problem: the portal rejects the password or username.
  • Email or code problem: a message or verification code does not arrive, or the portal rejects it.
  • Identity or CAPTCHA problem: an identity check, CAPTCHA, or embedded verification step cannot be completed.

These symptoms do not by themselves establish that the portal is down. Check the specific service’s official status page or help page if it provides one; Login.gov, for example, directs its users to check its status page for service issues (Login.gov sign-in troubleshooting).

Try the low-risk loading and browser checks

  1. Check your connection and reopen the official portal. Confirm that your internet connection is working, reload once, and navigate from the service’s official home page rather than an old saved login link. The Singapore CPF Board advises users to check their connection and relaunch its site (CPF Board login guidance). New York State Department of Labor likewise warns users not to rely on bookmarked Online Services pages (New York State DOL Online Services login tips).
  2. Try a private window or another current browser. This helps determine whether the issue is tied to the current browser session. Login.gov and New York State DOL include browser or session troubleshooting in guidance for their own services; Course Hero describes this approach for a login redirect (Course Hero login-redirect help).
  3. If sign-in keeps looping, clear data for that site. If the browser allows it, remove the affected portal’s cache and cookies, then restart the browser and try again. Clearing all browser data can sign you out of other services or remove saved site state, so use the narrower site-specific option where possible.
  4. Check only settings the portal identifies as relevant. Some sign-in or verification flows rely on cookies, and CAPTCHA checks may be affected by VPNs, proxies, ad blockers, or third-party-cookie settings. Login.gov and OPA.mil describe these as possible factors for their own authentication or registration flows (Login.gov reCAPTCHA troubleshooting; OPA.mil registration help). Follow the portal’s instructions; if you temporarily test without a VPN, proxy, or blocker, restore your setting afterward rather than disabling protections globally.

If an email or verification code is missing or rejected

When a confirmation email does not arrive

Check the spam or junk folder and confirm that the address shown by the portal is correct. If mail is forwarded, check the original mailbox as well as the forwarding destination. Login.gov recommends these checks for its own confirmation emails and advises users to request another email only after checking the destination and address (Login.gov email verification help).

When a code is rejected or never arrives

Confirm that you entered the right email address or phone number and typed the current code accurately. Login.gov notes that mistyped contact details or codes, limitations from a phone service, and temporary technical issues can interfere with its account process. Use the affected portal’s recovery steps rather than assuming Login.gov’s procedure applies to another service. Avoid repeatedly requesting codes before checking the destination and following the portal’s instructions.

When CAPTCHA or identity verification fails

Use the portal’s own verification guidance, since requirements differ by service. For Login.gov’s reCAPTCHA checks, its guidance recommends using the same device and browser, trying an updated or different browser, and clearing cache; it also notes VPNs and ad blockers as possible factors. Those steps are specific to Login.gov and are not a universal requirement for course or jobs portals.

Use the support team that owns the problem

A portal may use a separate sign-in provider, but that provider may not control the account’s course access, application status, eligibility, or records. Login.gov says it cannot sign in or manage accounts for users and directs agency-account questions to the relevant agency (Login.gov contact and support). For a course or job application, contact the school, training provider, employer, or agency responsible for that service if the issue is about what you can access or the status of your records. Use contact links reached from the portal’s official site.

Make a support request specific enough to investigate, but keep it private. Include the exact error text, the step where it occurs, the approximate time and time zone, your browser and device, and the checks you have already tried. Do not send your password, one-time code, Social Security number, or other unnecessary sensitive information. Login.gov’s contact page states: “For your privacy, do not submit sensitive information to this form.”

What to avoid while troubleshooting

  • Do not treat an old bookmark, a login loop, or a missing code as proof of a system-wide outage.
  • Do not clear all browser data before trying a private window or removing data only for the affected site.
  • Do not turn off security settings globally. Change a VPN, proxy, cookie, or blocker setting only temporarily when the portal’s guidance makes that test relevant.
  • Never give a support agent your password or verification code.
