Start by describing the song you want in ordinary language: its subject or scene, its mood, and a few defining musical details. Then make clear whether you want vocals or an instrumental, generate a take, and revise the one detail that matters most if the result misses your intent. Suno’s documented workflow illustrates this approach, but other music generators may use different controls.
Start with the song idea
Write down what the song is about or what moment it should evoke before reaching for technical terms. It might be a song about leaving a hometown, a tense scene before a storm, or a playful track for a late-night drive. Suno recommends beginning with a style, mood, subject, or whole idea—and says users can start with ordinary words rather than musical training or recording equipment. That guidance describes using Suno, not every aspect of making music.

A prompt does not need to be a paragraph. Suno’s Simple Mode instructions say: “Visit https://suno.com/create and select Simple, then write a description of what you want to hear.”

Add a few musical details
Once the idea is clear, add only the cues needed to point the generator in the right direction. Suno lists genre, mood, keywords, and instrumentation as possible details. You can also describe a performance quality, such as restrained, energetic, or intimate.
#1 Best Overall
- Style: Name a genre or blend if it is important to the idea.
- Mood: Describe the emotional character, such as wistful, celebratory, or uneasy.
- Sound: Mention one or two defining instruments or textures rather than stacking up a long list.
- Subject: Keep the story or scene explicit, especially when lyrics should reflect it.
A useful starting pattern is: “A [style] song about [subject or scene], with a [mood] feeling and [one or two defining sound details].” For example, Suno’s Simple Mode guidance offers “A synth pop song about having fun all night.” Treat the pattern as a way to organize your idea, not a formula that guarantees a particular result.
Decide whether you want vocals
For a song with lyrics
Describe the song’s subject and the feeling you want the performance to convey. In Suno’s documented workflows, you can either describe the idea for generated lyrics or enter your own lyrics in the relevant workflow. Avoid leaving vocal intent ambiguous if a sung song is central to the request.

For an instrumental
Say that the track should be wordless and do not ask for a singer or lyrics. Where the service offers an instrumental control, use it as well. Suno’s Android instructions show an Instrumental toggle alongside a style description: “an ethereal electro hypnotic instrumental with sweeping pads.” The label and location of such a control are specific to the service and can change.

Do not assume every music generator has the same prompt box or settings. In Suno, Simple Mode is a text-to-song route; its Advanced or Custom workflows provide more control, including separate ways to work with lyrics and style. Suno’s iOS instructions also describe entering lyrics yourself or having them generated and toggling Instrumental. Use the fields available in the version and platform you are using rather than trying to reproduce another service’s interface.

Listen and revise one mismatch at a time
After generating a take, compare it with the original idea. Identify the most important miss—perhaps the mood is too cheerful, the sound is too sparse, or you wanted an instrumental—and make that point clearer in the next prompt or the relevant control. Changing one major instruction at a time makes it easier to judge whether the new version moved closer to the target.
- Check the intention: Does the result fit the subject or scene?
- Choose the main mismatch: Focus on mood, style, instrumentation, or vocal intent—not every detail at once.
- Clarify that instruction: Use a more direct description or the appropriate setting if the interface provides one.
- Generate another take and listen: Compare it with what you wanted to hear, then decide whether another adjustment is worthwhile.
Suno describes generating versions and refining an idea. Iteration is a practical way to steer the result, not a guarantee that any particular prompt will produce a better song.

What to expect from a good prompt
A prompt’s job is to communicate a direction: what the song is about, how it should feel, what it should sound like, and whether it should include vocals. Clear priorities are more useful than piling on details that compete with one another. The exact controls—and how a generator interprets the words—vary by service, so Suno’s examples should be treated as examples of Suno’s workflow rather than a universal standard.
