Which resolution should you use for stock footage?
Start with the delivery requirements for the project: the intended output resolution, where it will be viewed, and whether you need to crop or move within the frame. Shutterstock describes HD as a versatile option for work such as TV, film, digital ads, and social media, and recommends 4K for television, film, large displays, and projection. Those are provider recommendations, not universal platform rules; check the requirements set by your client, broadcaster, platform, or screening venue. - Consider 8K only after checking the specific clip. Confirm its dimensions, orientation, license, and download options with the library rather than assuming a routine standard or availability.
What do HD and 4K mean in actual dimensions?
Labels are not a substitute for checking pixel dimensions. Shutterstock lists 1920×1080 as HD and distinguishes UHD television 4K at 3840×2160 from digital-cinema 4K at 4096×2160. Its contributor requirements accept multiple 4K dimensions and orientations, so a clip described as 4K may not have the exact dimensions or shape your project expects. Is 4K stock footage worth it for an HD video?
It can be, when you need to adjust composition after the shoot. A 4K source gives an editor more room to crop, zoom, or pan while still producing a 1920×1080 HD output. That flexibility is useful when the original framing is too wide or when a subtle movement is needed, but it does not make 4K the right choice for every clip. Shutterstock explains the reframing advantage of 4K footage.
Weigh that flexibility against storage and media handling: higher-resolution stock video takes more space, and codec choice affects compression, quality, and practicality. How do you keep stock footage consistent with the rest of a project?
Match the stock clip’s resolution and visual quality to the project footage where possible. A mismatch may be deliberate—for example, to create a simulated VHS look or a security-camera feed—but otherwise differences can be distracting. What should you verify before licensing?
- Check the final delivery resolution and any requirements from the destination, client, or venue.
- Inspect the clip’s actual pixel dimensions and orientation; do not rely on the HD, 4K, or 8K label alone.
- Decide whether the edit needs room to crop, zoom, or pan, and choose a larger source only if that flexibility is useful.
- Compare the clip’s visual quality with the other footage, unless the difference is an intentional effect.
- Confirm the current clip page’s file size, codec or format, license, download options, and cost before committing.
