Critique is encouraged but not required; generative AI writing or AI-assisted revision is prohibited by the Wiki’s current rules. The SCP Wiki describes itself as “a literary writing website,” so a compelling anomaly description alone is not enough.
Start with the official guides and rules
Before drafting, use the Guide Hub to find the Wiki’s current contribution guidance. Read the Guide For Writing, How To Write An SCP, and Site Rules. Also check any policy relevant to your draft, such as image use, licensing, technical content, criticism, or deletion. These rules and forum procedures can change, so follow the live page text and pinned forum instructions when you submit.

Build a story, not just an anomaly file
The Wiki’s Guide For Writing says works should be broadly complete and finalized before submission and recommends drafting in the Sandbox. Its typical SCP voice is clinical and neutral, but the article still needs to tell a coherent, complete story. Plan both what the anomaly is and what the reader discovers through the document.

Use the standard format as a starting point
The official How To Write An SCP page gives a sample structure: Item Number, Object Class, Special Containment Procedures, Description, and optional Addendum. These sections help present information in the familiar format; they do not replace the narrative. Make containment, description, and any addenda work together to reveal the article’s story.

Draft in the Sandbox and choose a feedback route
The official guide advises: “Use the Sandbox for drafting.” It lets you check Wikidot formatting and rendering and share work for feedback. Read the Sandbox’s own instructions and current forum rules before posting a draft.
Formal Draft Critique forum
If you are a first-time author seeking formal Draft Critique forum access, first obtain two greenlights on the corresponding concept in Idea Critique. Eligibility and process details may change, so verify the current pinned instructions before starting.
Community chat and coldposting
Community chat, including official Discord or IRC channels, is another place to seek critique; check the rules for the specific channel. Chat may allow more immediate exchanges, while forum threads can support asynchronous, detailed feedback. Neither route guarantees publication success. The FAQ says coldposting—publishing without getting feedback first—is possible but discouraged. Critique is encouraged, not a universal prerequisite for posting.

Revise and check rule compliance
Use feedback where it helps, then proofread the full article and inspect its Sandbox rendering. The SCP Writing Walkthrough specifically recommends a final proofread and a rating module. Remove placeholders such as SCP-XXXX before publication.

Do not use generative AI or AI-assisted revision
The Site Rules prohibit posting generative machine-learning content to the SCP Wiki, its associated forums, or an official Sandbox. The writing guide explicitly includes AI-generated and AI-assisted writing, including AI revision. Write and revise the work yourself; do not submit text produced or revised with generative AI.
Avoid plagiarism and handle collaborators properly
The Site Rules prohibit presenting another person’s writing as your own. Credit collaborators and follow the current co-authorship rules.

Source and license images and other material
If you use images, the Site Rules require sources on the discussion page and compliance with sourcing and licensing requirements. The writing guide says to include licensing information in a License Box. Read the Guide Hub for the relevant image-use and licensing policies before including images or third-party material.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFollow conduct and technical policies
Forum and critique participation must remain civil and comply with community rules; brigading is prohibited. Published pages must follow the Technical Content Policy, and themes and CSS are also governed by policy. Check the current rules rather than assuming a formatting choice is allowed.
Best Value
Publish an SCP through an open series slot
-
Confirm that the article is complete, proofread, and free of placeholders, and that you have checked its rendering and required rating module in the Sandbox.
-
Find an available [ACCESS DENIED] slot in the current SCP Series and follow the current series instructions.
-
Create the SCP-[number] page for the chosen slot, copy in the complete draft, and replace the slot label with the article name.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
For other page types, the Guide For Writing directs authors to the sidebar’s Contribute option and the Tales section. Use the contribution route for the type of page you are creating rather than treating every page as an SCP.
After publication: announce and monitor the page
The walkthrough advises announcing the article in the appropriate forum thread and monitoring early responses so obvious defects can be addressed. Published articles receive community votes, and voters are not required to explain their votes. The FAQ says a page is typically subject to a deletion vote when it reaches -10 or lower; consult the current Deletions Guide for the exact process and any exceptions. Treat voting as community response to a page, not as a personal judgment of its author.
