You do not need magic wording or special syntax: start with a clear request, then refine the response if it misses something.
How do I create a good prompt for an AI model?
Think of a prompt as a clear request to a colleague. Name the task instead of offering a few keywords, include relevant background, and explain the format or style you want. OpenAI’s ChatGPT prompt engineering guidance and beginner prompting guide both emphasize clear tasks, useful context, and an intended output.

#1 Best Overall
This is a checklist, not a special command language or a promise that the answer will be correct. For a simple request, one or two sentences may be enough. For a complicated task, separating the instructions, context, and input can make the request easier to follow.
What should I include in an AI prompt?
- The task: Say what action you want, such as summarize, compare, explain, draft, or plan.
- Relevant context: Include the facts, source text, audience, or situation the assistant needs. Avoid adding unrelated background.
- Constraints: Mention requirements and exclusions, such as a budget, deadline, preferred approach, or facts that must not be changed.
- The desired result: Specify format, length, tone, and level of detail when they affect what would be useful.
- How to handle gaps: If assumptions could cause problems, ask the assistant to ask a clarifying question or identify uncertainty rather than fill in missing facts.
You do not have to include every item in every prompt. Add enough to distinguish the answer you want from a generic one. A detailed request can guide the response, but it does not prove the response is accurate; check important claims against reliable evidence.
AI prompt examples: vague requests made clearer
Summarizing a document
Vague: “Summarize this.”
Clearer: “Summarize the attached project update for a busy manager in five bullets. Include decisions, blockers, and next steps. Use plain language and do not add facts that are not in the update.”
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The clearer version identifies the source, audience, length, priorities, style, and boundary on what facts to use. If the document is long, you can also specify which sections or decisions matter most.
Planning a trip
Broad: “Help me plan a trip to London.”
More specific: “Plan a week in London in July for a family of four that enjoys theatre. We prefer mid-range hotels, inexpensive dinners, and fewer historic sites. Give us a day-by-day itinerary and suggest an evening show each day.”
Dates, group size, interests, preferences, and the requested itinerary give the assistant useful boundaries. Add a budget or accessibility needs if they matter to your plans.
Rank #3
Drafting a workplace announcement
More useful: “Draft a two-paragraph announcement email for our product launch using the attached feature list and positioning notes. Give it a short subject line, an engaging opening, and a clear call to action.”
When a draft must stick to supplied material, say so. Ask the assistant to flag assumptions rather than presenting them as established product facts.
How to improve an AI answer in a follow-up
Treat the first response as a draft, not a final verdict. Point to the specific change you want instead of repeating the whole request or asking vaguely for something “better.” OpenAI’s prompt guidance recommends refining requests based on initial answers.
- “Make this shorter and keep the three decisions.”
- “Use a warmer tone but keep the facts unchanged.”
- “You missed the budget constraint; revise the plan around a total of $800.”
- “Separate confirmed details from assumptions, and ask me about anything essential that is missing.”
OpenAI Help Center puts the approach this way: “Treat prompting as a conversation: refine your requests based on initial answers and keep experimenting.”

Add examples when you need the assistant to follow a particular pattern, style, or output shape that is hard to describe precisely. Choose examples that resemble the real task, and make clear which features the assistant should imitate. Examples are optional; recommendations differ by model.

For instance, Anthropic’s Claude prompting guidance recommends relevant, varied examples and suggests 3–5 for its own model guidance. That is a Claude-specific recommendation, not a universal rule for ChatGPT or every AI assistant.
Best Value
For a complex prompt, labels or delimiters can distinguish directions from background and source material. Anthropic also recommends XML tags such as <instructions>, <context>, and <input> for Claude prompts when that separation helps. For an ordinary request, plain prose is usually simpler.
Does a better prompt guarantee a better or accurate answer?
No prompt guarantees a correct answer. Clear instructions and relevant context can make the requested task and format less ambiguous, but the model can still misunderstand, omit details, or provide incorrect information. For consequential decisions, verify claims against dependable sources and treat unsupported specifics cautiously. There is no established accuracy percentage or numeric improvement that applies to prompting in general.
