What’s new with Focus in iOS 27?
Apple describes Focus as a way to minimize distractions. In iOS 27, the notable addition is an Apple Intelligence option that applies automated judgment to notifications that you have not specifically allowed or silenced. The feature is optional and works within the existing Focus system, alongside its controls for people, apps, schedules, screens, and app information.

Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing
Turn on Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing for a Focus to allow important notifications to interrupt and silence notifications considered less important. Apple’s guide explicitly says that notifications specifically allowed or silenced will keep those settings. The option therefore does not replace your explicit choices; it adds AI-assisted handling for notifications outside them. Apple’s iOS 27 Focus setup guide documents the setting.
Reduce Interruptions Focus
Reduce Interruptions is a named Focus that uses Apple Intelligence to identify notifications that may need immediate attention and silence less important ones. It is an option for people who want automated triage, rather than a requirement for using Focus or Do Not Disturb.

Does iOS 27 Focus use Apple Intelligence?
Only the AI-assisted notification features described above require Apple Intelligence. Standard Focus controls—such as choosing which people and apps can notify you, setting a schedule, and changing a Lock Screen—do not require an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone.
Apple lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later among the iPhones that support Apple Intelligence for iOS 27. Availability also varies by device model, language, and region. Check Apple’s Apple Intelligence availability information for the current compatibility details. Apple’s September 14, 2026 iOS 27 announcement also cautions that features may vary by language and region; Siri rollout limits should not be read as a blanket statement about Focus availability.

Choose between fixed rules and automatic triage

This is a choice about control and predictability, not a documented performance ranking: Apple does not publish a Focus-specific statistic showing how accurately or often the AI identifies urgent notifications. If you need a fixed allowlist, use the manual rules. If you are comfortable with Apple Intelligence judging other notifications, try the AI option and adjust your explicit settings as needed.
Set up or change a Focus in iOS 27
- Open Settings > Focus, then choose a provided Focus such as Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, or Work, or create a custom one.
- Choose which people and apps to allow or silence. For apps, you can permit Time Sensitive Notifications. For calls, Focus includes options such as allowing repeated calls, choosing call groups, or allowing calls from silenced people; Emergency Bypass can also be configured for emergency contacts.
- To try AI handling, turn on Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing in that Focus. Notifications you have specifically allowed or silenced keep those choices.
- Set an activation schedule by time, location, or when you open an app. Sleep Focus follows the sleep schedule set in Health.
- Optionally, connect a Lock Screen or Home Screen to the Focus, and add Focus filters to change which account or information a supported app displays while it is active.
You can also activate a Focus from Control Center and choose an ending point, such as one hour, the evening, or when you leave a location.

What carries across devices—and what does not
Share Across Devices can apply the same Focus settings to Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Focus filters do not sync across devices when Share Across Devices is on, so check the relevant app and device if a filter does not behave as expected.
Focus Status sharing is separate: when enabled, people contacting you may see that notifications are silenced. It signals that state; it does not reveal the contents of silenced notifications.

What the change means in practice
For most people, iOS 27 does not require relearning Focus. The existing manual controls remain useful for predictable quiet hours and exceptions. The new choice is whether to let Apple Intelligence make additional notification decisions for a Focus. You can use ordinary Focus without compatible AI hardware, and there is no documented basis to upgrade an iPhone solely to get Focus controls.
