A useful pull request walkthrough pairs each important explanation with something a reviewer can inspect: the relevant diff, a recorded check result, or context about where and how to review. Describe what this PR actually changes and what you actually verified; a screenshot or confident summary is not a substitute for test results.
Start with the problem and intended result
Use the PR title and description to explain the problem, the approach, and the result. GitHub Docs puts it plainly: “A clear title and description help reviewers understand the problem, the approach, and the result.” Keep the description specific to this change, and link a related issue when one exists.

Give reviewers enough context to understand why the change is needed before asking them to inspect implementation details. Avoid broad claims that the diff or checks do not support.

Summarize the meaningful implementation steps, then direct reviewers to the files or lines that show them. If one part of the change depends on another, explain a useful review order. The summary is a map; the changed-file diff is where a reviewer can inspect the code.
#1 Best Overall
GitHub’s pull-request page brings together the conversation, commits, checks, and changed files. Use each surface for the claim it can support: describe intent in the conversation, use the diff to show code changes, and point to checks for automated validation. Keep the PR focused where possible. GitHub Docs notes that “Small, focused pull requests are easier to review and safer to merge.” If a change has grown to cover distinct purposes, consider separating it into smaller PRs.
Show behavior changes with appropriate evidence
For a visible or user-facing change, a concise reproducible example or before-and-after image can help reviewers understand the result. Include one only when it accurately represents the current implementation. It illustrates behavior; it does not establish that tests or builds passed.
Rank #2
Choose evidence according to the claim and the PR revision under review:
| Evidence | Best suited to show | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Changed-file diff | The code changes and the lines a reviewer should inspect | That automated checks passed or visible behavior works as intended |
| Checks view | Recorded automated tests, builds, and other validations | That every relevant behavior was manually tested |
| Screenshot or reproducible example | How a visible change looks or behaves in the illustrated case | That tests passed or that unshown cases work |
These are practical distinctions, not a prescribed evidence format. Keep demonstrations aligned with the revision being reviewed so they do not describe an outdated state.
Report validation without overstating it
Before requesting review, inspect the diff for accidental changes and check whether relevant builds or tests have run. In the description, name the checks and report their actual outcomes. Distinguish automated checks shown in GitHub’s Checks view from manual testing you performed. If a check has not run, say so rather than implying success.
A screenshot, implementation summary, or successful check cannot stand in for the others: each supports a different kind of claim. Make the connection explicit—for example, name the automated check and its displayed result, or describe the manual steps you carried out.
Rank #4
Make the review request specific
Tell reviewers what feedback would be most useful and which files or areas deserve attention. Reviewers can comment on specific lines, suggest edits, and submit a review decision, so orient them toward the parts of the diff where their input matters. If the work is not ready for review, create the PR as a draft; GitHub supports changing a draft to ready for review when it is ready.

A practical description outline
- Problem: What user or system issue prompted this change? Link the related issue when applicable.
- Intended result: What should be different after the change?
- Implementation map: What meaningful steps did you take, and which files or lines show them?
- Behavior evidence: For a visible change, provide an accurate example or image if it helps explain the result.
- Validation: Which builds, tests, or manual checks were run, and what were their actual outcomes?
- Review focus: What would you like reviewers to examine or comment on?
