Franchise lore, signature moves, and visual references should reward existing fans without being required to understand who wants what, what each fight risks, or why the next choice matters.
Start with the audience’s first question
Someone who has never played the game should be able to answer three questions early: Whose story is this? What does that person want right now? What happens if they fail? Do not begin by naming a tournament, dynasty, realm, energy system, or dozen-fighter alliance and expecting recognition to create interest. Recognition is a bonus; dramatic clarity is the entry point.

Warner Bros.’ official production notes for the 2021 Mortal Kombat film describe creating Cole Young, an original character who could discover the fictional world alongside viewers unfamiliar with the game. That is one adaptation choice, not a mandatory formula, but it demonstrates the value of a viewpoint character with an active personal problem rather than a passive role as an exposition recipient. Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYour protagonist does not have to be new to the franchise. A familiar fighter who is new to the current conflict, or an outsider ally with a concrete reason to get involved, can perform the same function. The test is whether the character asks questions because they need answers to pursue a goal, not because the screenplay needs to explain the wiki.

Choose an entry-point model
| Approach | How it onboards viewers | Main risk | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original newcomer protagonist | The audience learns the world as the character encounters it. | The new lead can feel like a replacement for the fighters fans came to see. | Give the lead a specific personal conflict and make established fighters essential mentors, rivals, or obstacles. |
| Familiar fighter, new conflict | The character’s reputation supplies immediate identity while the unfamiliar situation creates questions. | Writers may assume viewers already understand the character’s history. | State the current objective and relationship in behavior and dialogue during the first meaningful scene. |
| Outsider ally | A civilian, investigator, trainee, or family member provides a human-scale reason to enter the fighting world. | The ally can become a tour guide who never drives the plot. | Make the ally’s choice alter the plan, not merely trigger explanations. |
Give the protagonist a goal before explaining the mythology
Large stakes become legible when they grow out of a small, understandable problem. A character trying to protect a sibling, clear a dishonor, repay a debt, escape coercion, or prove they can control a dangerous ability gives every new rule a dramatic context. The world can become cosmic later; the first objective should be concrete enough to phrase in one sentence.
- Write the immediate objective. Use a verb and a person or place: “get my brother out of the tournament,” “find the fighter who betrayed my team,” or “survive one sanctioned bout.”
- Attach a visible deadline. A match, execution, invasion, expulsion, or public challenge tells viewers when failure arrives.
- Define the cost of losing. Loss should threaten a relationship, freedom, identity, bodily safety, or a plan—not only an abstract prophecy.
- Reveal the larger conflict through obstruction. Let an opponent, rule, or consequence make the wider mythology relevant to the protagonist’s current choice.
The 2021 Mortal Kombat production notes describe a novice fighter learning his connection to a larger conflict and entering training for a fight with much wider stakes. Use that as an example of escalation, not a requirement that every adaptation begin with an invented hero or a training montage. Warner Bros. production notes
Make every important fighter readable without a glossary
A roster is not a list of names. It is a set of competing wants expressed through choices. Before drafting a scene, write one line for each major fighter:
- Want: the result the fighter is pursuing now.
- Fear: what they believe will happen if they lose control.
- Method: how they solve problems under pressure.
- Relationship: who can change their plan or expose their contradiction.
- Visual or behavioral signature: a detail that identifies them even if their name is not spoken.
Warner Bros.’ notes emphasize recognizable costumes, catchphrases, signature actions, and fatality imagery as pleasures for established fans. Keep those signals, but attach each one to a readable action and motivation. A masked fighter who refuses to kill a rival tells a newcomer more than a reference to an unexplained clan. A flamboyant taunt can reveal insecurity, not just brand identity. Warner Bros. production notes
Introduce characters by decisions
Give a fighter an entrance that forces a choice. The disciplined champion stops a match when a bystander is endangered; the opportunist changes sides for payment; the veteran refuses an easy victory because it would repeat an old betrayal. Names, costumes, and signature moves can follow. Viewers now have a prediction about the person, and each later fight can confirm or challenge it.
Limit the active roster per sequence
A film can contain a large franchise roster without asking viewers to memorize everyone at once. In any scene, prioritize the protagonist, the immediate opponent, and one relationship that changes the stakes. Hold secondary fighters in reserve until their arrival changes a plan. If a character can be removed from a scene without altering anyone’s decision, the scene is probably carrying too much roster material.
Translate game mechanics into visible cause and effect
Do not explain button inputs, frame data, or a complete move catalogue. Explain only the rule that changes the next decision: what the ability can do, what it costs, and how an opponent can answer it.

In a 2017 Capcom interview, Yoshinori Ono described giving newcomers a story in which they could learn the appeal and mechanics of fighting games, saying: “Newcomers can enjoy the story while getting a chance to learn the fun and mechanics of fighting games.” Capcom’s 2017 developer interview
Use a three-beat rule demonstration
- Show the capability. A fighter freezes a weapon, redirects force, reads an opponent’s stance, or enters a dangerous powered state.
- Show the price. The move drains stamina, exposes a loved one, requires emotional control, or leaves the fighter unable to defend.
- Show the counter. An opponent changes distance, targets the cost, baits the move, or forces the fighter to choose between victory and another value.
When the rule returns, change one variable. The protagonist may understand the technique but hesitate to use it; the rival may have learned the counter; or the cost may now be unacceptable. This creates the feeling of strategic play without stopping the film for a lecture.
Design fights as dramatic scenes, not demonstrations
Every major bout should alter at least one of four things: a relationship, a plan, the balance of power, or a character’s understanding of themselves. If combat ends with the same alliances, information, and objective as before, shorten it or give it a sharper consequence.
Simon McQuoid said in a Directors Guild of America Q&A dated May 24, 2026, that he wanted “to feel the characters and the story even more within the fights” in Mortal Kombat II. That is a useful writing standard: plot the emotional journey of the fight during preproduction, rather than adding story after the action is designed. Directors Guild of America Q&A
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuild a fight card before choreographing moves
| Story component | Question to answer | Example consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | What does each fighter want from this encounter? | The hero needs time to unlock a gate; the rival wants the hero captured alive. |
| Opening advantage | Why does one fighter appear to control the bout? | The rival knows the hero’s preferred range. |
| Reversal | What discovery or decision changes the tactics? | The hero realizes the rival is protecting someone outside the arena. |
| Cost | What is damaged even if the hero wins? | The hero uses a forbidden technique and loses an ally’s trust. |
| Aftermath | What new action becomes necessary? | The team must enter the next match without its strategist. |
Give the fight an emotional point of view
Choose whose experience organizes the sequence. A frightened novice notices openings but cannot act; a proud champion sees every insult as a challenge; a former friend recognizes a defensive habit and delays the finishing blow. Camera spectacle, sound, and choreography should reinforce that point of view. A technically impressive move is memorable when it expresses a decision the character could not make in dialogue.
Make the ending specific
“The hero wins” is not an aftermath. Specify what the win buys and what it costs. A victory might secure passage but reveal the protagonist’s identity, save an opponent but forfeit the tournament, or expose a villain’s weakness while destroying the only evidence needed to stop them. The next scene should be impossible to write the same way if the fight’s result is removed.
Choose a lore-delivery system
There is no single correct amount of explanation. Choose the method that best serves the scene, then stop explaining once the viewer can predict the immediate consequence.

| Method | Best use | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Dialogue | A character needs to persuade, warn, recruit, or deceive someone. | Two characters exchange facts neither needs for a decision. |
| Mentor–student relationship | The protagonist must learn a rule through training and disagreement. | The mentor answers every question and is never challenged. |
| Rival relationship | Backstory and ideology emerge through repeated tests. | The rivalry consists only of insults and rematches. |
| Consequences | A rule is easiest to understand after a mistake. | The screenplay withholds basic stakes so long that failure feels arbitrary. |
| Visual evidence | Costumes, arenas, injuries, and rituals can establish history quickly. | Iconography is treated as self-explanatory when it has no effect on behavior. |
Reveal a rule when someone must act under it. If a tournament requires a particular victory condition, show a fighter making a tactical sacrifice because of that condition. If a faction cannot cross a boundary, let the boundary trap someone the protagonist needs. Information becomes memorable when it changes a choice.
Use a feature-film structure without treating a beat sheet as law
The official Save the Cat! site presents its books as screenwriting guides addressing structure and story problems. A beat-sheet method can help diagnose a draft, but it is not a fighting-game adaptation rule and does not guarantee newcomer comprehension. Save the Cat! official books page
Act one: orient and commit
- Open on a choice that demonstrates the protagonist’s ordinary problem and fighting identity.
- Introduce the opponent or threat in terms of the protagonist’s goal, not only its mythology.
- Force a commitment that closes the path back to normal life.
Act two: test and reframe
- Pair training or investigation with a relationship that can be damaged.
- Stage fights that teach rules while producing setbacks.
- Let a revelation change the meaning of an earlier allegiance, technique, or victory.
- At the midpoint, make the protagonist choose a riskier objective rather than merely receive more lore.
Act three: choose and pay
- Make the final strategy depend on a lesson learned through action.
- Force the protagonist to reject the easiest version of victory.
- Resolve the personal goal and the larger conflict at different but connected levels.
- Leave sequel material as a consequence, not as an unfinished explanation.
Balance franchise fidelity with dramatic clarity
Fidelity is more than reproducing a costume or naming a signature move. Preserve the elements that create identity: a fighter’s recognizable behavior, visual silhouette, combat rhythm, moral contradiction, and relationship to the wider roster. Adapt or combine material when doing so gives the central conflict a clean cause and effect.
Use a simple decision test for every reference:
- Does it help a newcomer understand the fighter’s want or method?
- Does it create a tactical or emotional consequence in this scene?
- Does it reward a fan without requiring prior recognition?
If the answer is no to all three, save the reference for a background detail or remove it. A film can honor a game more effectively by making one character’s defining trait dramatically useful than by placing ten unexplained names in dialogue.
Set tone and rating before writing the spectacle
Violence, humor, body horror, romance, and tournament grandeur signal different audience expectations. The cited production materials support recognizable moves, imagery, and character emotion, but they do not establish an ideal balance for every film. Decide what your intended audience can comfortably follow and what the story needs, then apply that decision consistently.

A joke should not erase the consequence of an injury that the next scene treats as serious. A gruesome finishing move should reveal character or alter the power balance, not interrupt a fight whose emotional stakes have been carefully established. If spectacle and consequence conflict, preserve the consequence.
What game and production examples can—and cannot—teach
Capcom’s 2023 report says the Street Fighter series had exceeded 50 million copies in sales and that Street Fighter 6 had exceeded 2 million units about one month after its June 2023 release, as of July 7, 2023. The same report describes Modern Controls and World Tour, a single-player mode for learning moves while exploring the universe, as efforts to remove hurdles for new and longtime players. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical drafting workflow
- Write the one-sentence promise. Name the protagonist, their immediate goal, and the opponent or deadline.
- Create a six-line roster sheet. Record each major fighter’s want, fear, method, relationship, signature, and change.
- Map the rules that matter. List only abilities, tournament conditions, factions, and costs that alter a decision in the first half of the film.
- Draft five fight cards. For each major bout, record objective, opening advantage, reversal, cost, and aftermath before writing choreography.
- Place lore beside action. Move each explanation into the scene where someone must use or resist the rule.
- Audit the midpoint and finale. The protagonist’s strategy should differ because of what earlier fights taught them, and the final choice should resolve the personal goal as well as the external threat.
- Run a cold-reader check. Ask a reader unfamiliar with the game to identify each fighter’s goal, the rule governing the last fight, and what changed afterward. Treat confusion as a draft problem to diagnose, not as evidence of a universal audience formula.
Common failure modes and repairs
The lore avalanche
Symptom: the opening names several realms, bloodlines, and historical wars before anyone makes a personal choice.
Repair: cut to the first decision that brings one rule into conflict with the protagonist’s goal. Move background history to the moment it changes that decision.
The museum-piece roster
Symptom: fighters arrive to display costumes and signature moves, then disappear without changing the plan.
Repair: assign each entrance a want and a consequence. Combine or delay characters who do not alter the current objective.

Final standard for the script
A newcomer should be able to follow the film without pausing to identify every fighter or look up every move. They should know whose decision is driving the scene, what the opponent can do, why the tactic is risky, and what the result changes. Fans should still find distinctive identities, recognizable imagery, and meaningful echoes of the game. The strongest adaptation serves both groups by making the franchise’s signature elements carry dramatic weight rather than asking recognition to do the storytelling.
