A payment or address hold, a security or identity review, a service-specific limit, and a legally required freeze are different situations—and none has a universal workaround. Read the notice inside your account, secure the account, complete legitimate requests, and only transfer crypto if the exchange explicitly allows it.
Find out what the restriction actually blocks
Sign in through the exchange’s official website or app and read the notice there. Do not rely on an unsolicited email, text, or direct message to explain the restriction or provide a link to resolve it.

Check whether the restriction applies to crypto withdrawals, fiat cash-outs, deposits, trading, a particular asset, or a particular destination address. It may affect one action while leaving others available. Coinbase, for example, describes separate limits on buying or selling, sending crypto, cashing out, and closing an account; the permissions depend on the restriction and service configuration. Kraken lists possible triggers including security concerns, suspected malicious activity, withdrawals to prohibited or scam-associated wallets, and chargebacks. These are examples of those providers’ policies, not rules that apply to every exchange.
Record the exact wording of the notice, the affected asset or payment method, and any stated reason or end date. That information helps distinguish a narrow hold from a broader account review.

Secure the account and respond through official channels
If you suspect someone else accessed the account, change your password through the official site, review two-factor authentication, and use any account-freeze or support feature you can reach independently from that site. Submit identity or source-of-funds documents only through the signed-in account or a support channel you have verified as official.
- Never give anyone your password, one-time verification code, recovery phrase, or remote access to your device.
- Do not pay a person or service promising to unlock, validate, or recover restricted funds.
- Keep the restriction notice, support ticket number, timestamps, and relevant transaction records.
Kraken Support says it will not ask customers for login credentials or remote access. Coinbase says its restriction-recovery steps require access to the account and 2-step verification. Coinbase Help describes review processing as typically taking up to 10 business days, while noting that some cases take longer; that is an estimate for Coinbase’s process, not a general exchange deadline.

Ask support what remains possible
Contact support using the exchange’s official site or app, and ask focused questions rather than repeatedly attempting transfers:
- What kind of restriction is active, and which specific actions does it block?
- Is there a security, identity, source-of-funds, payment-settlement, or other requirement still outstanding?
- Can I withdraw any crypto or fiat balance while the review is open?
- If this is a hold, what event started it and is there a stated end time?
- How can I check the review status, and what records should I keep?
Do not try alternate addresses or repeated small transfers to test the restriction. Those attempts may not clarify the reason for the block and could create additional security concerns.

Tell a routine hold from a broader review or freeze
A hold can apply to one funding method or address without meaning that the entire account is frozen. A broader review may affect several functions, and a legal freeze may prevent the exchange from releasing assets altogether. Compare the scope, stated trigger, and any duration in the account notice rather than treating every blocked withdrawal as the same problem.

Kraken says funding suspensions can disable fiat and crypto deposits and withdrawals until a review is complete. Coinbase says some customers whose accounts are closed may still be able to send remaining crypto to an external wallet and cash out remaining cash to a verified bank, while describing exceptional freezes required by court or other authority orders or sanctions law. These are provider-specific policies and do not establish what another exchange must allow.

Make an allowed withdrawal carefully
If the exchange still permits an external withdrawal, check every transfer detail before confirming it. A wallet purchase is not required to lift a restriction; a hardware wallet is simply one possible self-custody destination if you want one and can make an allowed withdrawal.

Make sure the receiving wallet or service supports the exact cryptocurrency and blockchain network selected at the exchange.
- Verify the destination. Copy the address from the receiving wallet and compare the full address before sending. Do not rely only on a familiar beginning or ending.
- Check extra fields and limits. Confirm whether a memo or tag is required, and review the fee and minimum shown by the exchange.
- Confirm you control or trust the destination. Do not send funds to a person who claims to be able to release your account or recover restricted assets.
- Consider a small test only when practical. A test transfer may add a fee and may be subject to platform limits, so account for both before deciding.
Kraken Support warns that crypto transactions are final and withdrawn funds cannot be reversed or recovered. Once a transfer is broadcast and confirmed, the exchange generally cannot retrieve it. A hardware wallet does not override exchange controls or make a transfer to the wrong address reversible.
Escalate with the right jurisdiction and records
If official support does not resolve the matter, preserve your notices, ticket history, account statements, and transaction records. Identify the legal entity that operates the exchange and the country or state relevant to your account before looking for a complaint or legal route. Options vary by jurisdiction and by the facts of the restriction; contacting a regulator does not guarantee the funds will be released.
If the notice indicates a court order or sanctions restriction, the exchange may be legally unable to release the assets. Do not attempt to evade the restriction through another account, address, or intermediary. The appropriate next step depends on the governing order and jurisdiction, so seek qualified local advice where needed.
