A VPN can change the location Netflix sees for your connection, but it does not guarantee access to a particular country’s catalog. Netflix says VPN viewers may see only titles it licenses worldwide, and recommends turning off the VPN if it blocks titles available in their region. VPN use is unsupported for live events and ad-supported viewing.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do for Netflix
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a server in another location, so Netflix may see a different apparent location for your connection. That can affect which titles the service shows, but it is not a promise that you can choose and reliably watch any national catalog. Netflix says that when you watch through a VPN, you may see only shows and movies it has worldwide licensing for. Netflix’s VPN help page explains this limitation and says to disable the VPN to see titles available in your region.

The licensing context matters: Netflix said in a January 14, 2016 statement that it would continue enforcing geographic content licensing while working to improve proxy detection. That statement describes policy context from 2016; it does not show whether any VPN currently works with a particular catalog.

- Ad-supported viewing: Netflix says VPN connections are not supported with its ad-supported experience.
Choose a setup path for your device
There are two common ways to connect a viewing device through a VPN: run a VPN app on that device, or configure the VPN on a router. The choice is mainly about device compatibility and convenience—not a guarantee of which Netflix titles will play.

Use an app on the viewing device
Provider setup instructions can help with installation and connection, but treat them as setup guidance rather than a promise of Netflix access. For example, ExpressVPN’s Netflix guide describes app-based use on computers, phones, tablets, smart TVs, streaming devices, and some consoles. Check the provider’s current instructions for your specific device before subscribing or installing anything.
Consider a router only when needed
A VPN-configured router can cover a TV or console that lacks a native VPN app. ExpressVPN’s router setup guide describes a workflow of configuring the router, connecting to a server, checking the IP address and DNS for leaks, connecting the viewing device to that router, and opening Netflix. Follow the instructions for your exact router and VPN service; configurations and compatible models vary.

Router setup may take more work than installing an app, and the router’s VPN connection can reduce speed. Provider-published router guidance also notes that some app features may be unavailable when using a router configuration. If you are considering this route, check the router maker’s specifications and the VPN provider’s compatibility instructions first.

Connect and test the Netflix experience
- Check your device and subscription needs. Verify that the VPN service supports your viewing device. ExpressVPN’s guide says its setup requires an active ExpressVPN subscription and a Netflix subscription; requirements may differ for other services.
- Install the VPN app or configure the router. Use the provider’s current instructions for the device or router model. If configuring a router, connect the viewing device to that router’s network after setup.
- Connect to a server location. The provider’s app or router settings will show the available locations. Do not assume that choosing a location will produce that country’s full Netflix catalog.
- Open Netflix and check what plays. If Netflix limits the selection or displays a VPN/proxy warning, use Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the setup is guaranteed to work.
Fix the “using a VPN or proxy” message
If Netflix reports that you appear to be using a VPN or proxy, its recommended troubleshooting step is to turn off the VPN and try again. This may be inconvenient if you intentionally enabled the VPN, but it is Netflix’s stated step for resolving the message.

- Disconnect the VPN on the viewing device, or disable the VPN connection on the router if the device is routed through one.
- Check whether antivirus software has an active VPN feature. Netflix notes that some antivirus products include VPN service.
- Retry Netflix without the VPN. If you are still troubleshooting, Netflix’s support instructions describe using fast.com to check the country reported by the client.
If your goal is to watch titles available in your current region, leaving the VPN off is the direct option Netflix recommends when the VPN changes or limits the catalog.

What to know before relying on a VPN abroad
- Catalog access can vary, and the sources here do not establish which VPN providers currently work with particular Netflix regions.
- Provider setup pages describe how to connect devices; they are not independent tests or guarantees of access.
- A router is a workaround for devices without a VPN app, not a way to bypass compatibility limits. It may require more configuration and can affect speed.
