You can watch local broadcast news without cable in three main ways: use an HDTV antenna for free over-the-air broadcasts, subscribe to a live-TV streaming service that carries your local station, or check the station’s website or app for online coverage. For free live local channels, start by checking the FCC reception map for your address before buying an antenna; the map is an estimate, not a reception guarantee.

Use an antenna for free live local broadcasts
An antenna is the most direct route to free live broadcasts from local stations, when you can receive their signals. The FCC says, “Depending on your location, this could be either an outdoor rooftop antenna or an indoor antenna.” Its consumer guide also explains that a digital TV can receive over-the-air broadcasts with an appropriate antenna; an analog-only TV needs a digital-to-analog converter box. Check reception before buying
- Open the FCC DTV Reception Maps and look up your address.
- Review which stations the map predicts may be available. The FCC’s model uses terrain data and assumes an outdoor antenna 30 feet above ground.
- Choose an indoor or outdoor antenna based on your situation, then test reception where you plan to use it.
The map predicts signal availability; it does not guarantee what a particular home or room will receive. The FCC notes that indoor reception can vary significantly. Buildings, trees, weather, hills, antenna placement, and equipment can all affect the result, so do not treat a predicted station list as a guaranteed channel count. FCC DTV Reception Maps.

Try a paid live-TV streaming service if reception is not enough
Live-TV streaming can provide local broadcast affiliates without an antenna, but the lineup is location-specific. Before signing up, check that the service carries the exact ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, or other local affiliate you want in your ZIP code. Also compare current plan prices and terms; availability and pricing can change.

For example, Hulu’s April 3, 2026 guide says a Live TV plan is required to watch live content and that regional restrictions and blackouts apply. It directs viewers to enter a ZIP code to check available channels in their area. That is a provider-specific example, not evidence that every service carries every local station. Check station apps, but distinguish local news from national streams
Your local station’s website or app may offer local clips, newscasts, or live coverage. Availability differs by station, so check the affiliate you want rather than assuming every station streams its broadcast for free.

A free national news feed is not automatically a substitute for a local newscast. NBC News Group’s support page, updated December 10, 2025, lists NBC News NOW as free on NBCNews.com and on several apps and platforms, but states that “NBC News NOW is not a livestream of NBC news programming.” The same page says viewers need to sign in with a TV provider to watch the NBC livestream. Add streaming or recording to antenna TV if you need it
An over-the-air tuner or network streamer can send antenna channels to supported devices; a DVR can add recording. These are optional extras, not substitutes for an antenna signal. AirTV says its devices pair with an HD antenna and use the Sling app on supported devices. Its product information says AirTV 2 requires an external hard drive for DVR, while AirTV Anywhere includes a built-in 1 TB DVR. Local channel availability varies by geography. - Want free live local channels? Check the FCC map, then try an antenna suited to your location.
- Need a station the antenna cannot receive? Check whether a paid live-TV service carries that specific affiliate in your ZIP code, and compare its current price before subscribing.
- Mostly want clips or national headlines? Check the local station’s site or app and consider a free national stream, keeping in mind that it may not include your local newscast.
- Want to watch antenna channels on more devices or record them? Consider an OTA tuner or DVR only after confirming that its setup supports your antenna, apps, and devices.
