To assess whether an EV maker can support your car, review its latest financial filings, read the actual warranty, and check service access and the vehicle’s recall status. No single cash balance or financial ratio can predict whether a company will remain in business—or guarantee repairs will be convenient. Treat these as separate checks: the company’s capacity to fund itself, the promises it has made to owners, and the support available where you live.

Is this EV company financially stable?

Start with the manufacturer’s latest annual report and any newer interim filings. For a U.S. public company, search its filings through SEC EDGAR. Note the reporting period and filing date, then compare several years where possible. A single year can be skewed by expansion, restructuring, tax credits, or other one-off items.

Look at cash and short-term investments alongside cash flow, debt, upcoming repayments, capital spending, and whether the business repeatedly relies on new borrowing or share issuance. Also read the risk factors and financial-statement notes for going-concern language, supplier concentration, warranty liabilities, litigation, production commitments, and dependence on incentives or outside financing. A going-concern disclosure or worsening liquidity trend matters, but neither predicts the future with certainty.

Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K illustrates the figures to locate, not a pass/fail benchmark: at December 31, 2025, Tesla reported $16.51 billion in cash and cash equivalents, $27.55 billion in short-term investments, $8.18 billion in aggregate principal indebtedness, and $6.43 billion in unused committed credit. These are Tesla’s reported figures at that date; they do not establish a universal threshold for financial health. Tesla 2025 Form 10-K.

How to interpret warranty reserves

A warranty reserve is an accounting estimate of future warranty and recall costs, not a pot of money guaranteed to cover a particular owner’s repair. Tesla reported accrued warranty of $8.607 billion at December 31, 2025. Its filing says estimates draw on claims incurred and expectations about the nature, frequency, and cost of future claims, and notes that they are uncertain. Reserve totals are not meaningfully comparable without considering vehicle volume, warranty exposure, claims history, accounting practices, and company scale. Tesla 2025 Form 10-K.

Will the EV maker still be around in five years?

Public filings can help you assess risk, but they cannot answer that question with certainty. There is no universal, validated cutoff for cash, debt, or warranty reserves that establishes an automaker’s survival prospects. Judge the direction and context of several indicators together: operating cash flow, liquidity, debt maturities, financing needs, and stated risks. Private companies and companies reporting outside the United States may publish less information or use different filing systems, so the available evidence may be less complete.

Keep company solvency distinct from owner support. A financially strong manufacturer may still have limited local service or parts access; a company facing financial pressure may continue to operate and honor obligations. The filings are useful evidence, not a promise about the company’s future or your repair experience.

What happens to the warranty if the company fails?

Do not assume that a warranty will remain easy to claim if its issuer stops operating. The outcome depends on the written contract, who issued it, local law, and the circumstances of any business failure; the available financial figures alone do not establish what would happen to a specific owner’s coverage. Before buying, identify the warranty issuer and obtain the terms that apply to the exact vehicle, model year, and market.

Check the terms that control your vehicle

  • Basic vehicle coverage and the components it includes.
  • Battery and drive-unit coverage, including any stated capacity-retention threshold.
  • Exclusions, required maintenance, and the process for submitting a claim.
  • Whether coverage transfers to a later owner and any conditions on transfer.
  • Whether an extended-service plan is available, who provides it, and its limits.

Ask for the complete written warranty and any extended-service agreement before purchase, and confirm that the issuer, market, model year, vehicle identification number (VIN), and transfer terms match the deal. A manufacturer’s filing may summarize its policies, but the contract governs the coverage. For example, Tesla’s FY2024 filing describes limited warranties for new and used vehicles it sells directly; terms may cover specified components, damage, or battery capacity retention, and extended-service-plan availability varies by model and specified regions. Tesla FY2024 Form 10-K.

How do I check whether service and parts support are reachable?

Check the network for the places you actually drive, not just the manufacturer’s total location count. Map company-owned and authorized service sites, then ask a nearby service provider what work it handles on the model you are considering. Confirm whether mobile service is available, how warranty claims are booked, where collision repairs are performed, and whether towing or parts delays could make a repair difficult.

  • Find the nearest service center and authorized repair options, including collision repairers.
  • Ask whether mobile technicians cover your address and what work they can perform.
  • Check towing distance and whether roadside assistance is included in the vehicle’s terms.
  • Ask about parts access for the specific model and whether the repairer has seen delays.
  • Check charging coverage along your usual routes and in places you expect to travel.

Treat seller assurances as claims to verify directly with the service provider. Tesla’s FY2024 filing describes company service locations and mobile technicians; its FY2025 filing describes a growing global retail, service, and charging footprint. The FY2025 filing also reports sourcing from thousands of global suppliers and some components from single suppliers—a reminder that supplier concentration can matter to parts availability. Those disclosures describe Tesla, not the support network or supply-chain risk of every EV maker. Tesla 2025 Form 10-K; Tesla FY2024 Form 10-K.

How can I check whether a used EV has an open recall?

In the United States, search the vehicle’s VIN using the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall lookup. Ask the seller or dealer for documentation showing that recall remedies were completed, and check again close to purchase because vehicle-specific recall information can change. For a vehicle bought elsewhere, use the relevant country’s regulator or the manufacturer’s VIN recall tool.

Can incentives change the company’s outlook or your buying decision?

Yes. Incentives can affect buyer costs and company demand, but eligibility and program terms vary by jurisdiction and can change. Tesla’s FY2025 filing reports that the U.S. One Big Beautiful Bill Act, enacted July 4, 2025, curtailed several Inflation Reduction Act consumer incentives, including consumer EV credits, and changed other program terms. That filing does not determine what applies to your purchase. Check official government rules for your location and purchase date rather than relying on a generic eligibility summary. Tesla 2025 Form 10-K.

A practical pre-purchase check

  1. Identify the company and its filings. Confirm the legal issuer behind the brand. Find its latest audited annual report and newer interim reports; for U.S. public companies, use SEC EDGAR. Record the periods covered.
  2. Compare the financial trend. Where information is available, review at least three years of cash from operations, cash and short-term investments, debt, operating results, capital spending, and borrowing or share issuance.
  3. Read the risk disclosures. Check notes and risk factors for debt maturities, liquidity concerns, warranty liabilities, supplier concentration, litigation, production commitments, and dependence on financing or incentives.
  4. Match the warranty to the car. Obtain the written warranty and any extended plan, and confirm the issuer, market, model year, VIN, and transfer conditions.
  5. Verify local support. Contact a nearby service center or authorized repairer about coverage, mobile service, warranty claims, collision repairs, and parts for the model.
  6. Check the VIN for recalls. Use NHTSA in the United States or the relevant regulator or manufacturer tool elsewhere, and request proof of completed repairs.
  7. Verify current purchase rules. Check official incentive requirements for the jurisdiction and purchase date.

How to compare two EV makers

Compare the same kinds of evidence for each company and keep distinct questions separate: finances indicate capacity to fund the business; warranty terms define what the maker promises; local service and parts access determine how reachable support may be.

What to compare What it helps you assess
Liquidity and operating cash-flow trend Whether the company has resources and whether operations generate cash over time.
Debt, maturities, and financing dependence Repayment obligations and reliance on new borrowing or share issuance.
Warranty costs and reserves over time Reported estimates of future repair costs, interpreted in light of scale, exposure, and claims.
Written warranty scope and transferability Which repairs are covered, for how long or under what conditions, and whether coverage transfers.
Local service, repair, and parts access How practical it may be to obtain covered work and parts near home or on regular routes.
Recall handling and completion Whether the particular vehicle has open campaigns and how repairs are documented.
