To check whether a service carries the channels you want, use its lineup lookup for your ZIP code before signing up.
What you need to watch TV over Wi-Fi
- A reliable internet connection: Your home Wi-Fi carries the video stream from the internet to your device.
- A supported screen or streaming device: This could be a smart TV, streaming player, computer, or mobile device. App availability depends on the specific model, so check the service’s current compatibility information.
- A live-TV service: Install its app and sign in. Hulu says viewers need a subscription, supported device, and high-speed internet connection to start watching (Hulu + Live TV).
Wi-Fi is only the connection method; it does not automatically include TV channels. The service you choose determines the channel package, local affiliates, and account rules.

Choose a service that carries your channels
Channel availability can vary by location and subscription. Check the provider’s channel lineup using your ZIP code before paying, and verify that the local station affiliates you want are included. Hulu offers a ZIP-code lookup, and Sling provides a local-channel lookup (Hulu + Live TV; Sling).

Set up live TV on your device
- Check compatibility. Look up your exact TV or streaming-device model on the service’s current support page. Hulu lists select Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and smart TV models; that does not mean every model in those families supports the app. YouTube TV lists viewing on computers, smart TVs, streaming devices, and mobile devices (Hulu + Live TV; YouTube TV).
- Connect the device to Wi-Fi. Use the network settings on the TV, player, computer, or phone to join your home network.
- Install the provider’s app and sign in. On a computer, you may be able to watch through the service’s website instead.
- Check the channel lineup and start a live stream. If a channel is missing, confirm your ZIP-code lineup and subscription before troubleshooting the Wi-Fi connection.
If your TV does not support the app, a compatible streaming device may provide access. Confirm the exact model works with your chosen service before buying it.
Check whether your internet is fast enough
Provider speed figures are recommendations or requirements, not guarantees: actual playback can also depend on Wi-Fi coverage, network congestion, and how many devices share the connection.

| Service | Published speed guidance | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Hulu | 8 Mbps for live streams; 16 Mbps for 4K content | Hulu’s sustained download-speed recommendations, stated September 28, 2026 (Hulu internet speed recommendations). |
| Sling | At least 3 Mbps | Sling’s stated minimum for a reliable internet connection (Sling service information). |
These figures are service-specific. If streams buffer, check the connection where the TV is located, reduce competing network use, or connect the device to the router by Ethernet if it supports a wired connection.
Can you watch local channels without a live-TV subscription?
Often, an over-the-air (OTA) antenna is the separate option for receiving local broadcast channels. It picks up broadcast signals rather than streaming channels over Wi-Fi, and reception depends on your location and signal conditions. An antenna does not unlock cable channels.
