Standard FIH outdoor field hockey is played in four 15-minute quarters. To follow a live match, look for the tournament’s official viewing information for your country, then watch the quarter clock, shooting circle and set-piece restarts: those cues explain how long the game runs and when a goal can count.

How long is a field hockey game?
Under the FIH Rules of Hockey 2023, Rule 5.1, a standard outdoor match consists of four 15-minute quarters: 60 minutes of regulation playing time. The scheduled intervals are two minutes after the first and third quarters and five minutes at half-time. Altogether, the quarters and scheduled breaks make 69 minutes on the clock structure, before stoppages or other event coverage.
That figure is not the expected length of a complete broadcast or a visit to the venue. Stoppages, video review, a penalty corner that continues at the end of a quarter, presentation and television segments can extend elapsed time. The FIH rules also allow periods or intervals to differ where the competition regulations set them or the relevant parties agree.

For viewers, the quarter clock is the simplest guide: outdoor FIH play is split into four periods, not two halves. The final seconds may run beyond the displayed quarter end to complete a penalty corner or an umpire’s decision or review associated with the end of the period.
How do you score in field hockey?
A goal depends on where the attacking play happens. The attacker must play the ball from inside the shooting circle; the ball must remain inside the circle and then cross completely over the goal-line beneath the crossbar. A defender or goalkeeper may touch it after that qualifying attacking play. A shot taken from outside the circle does not count as a goal by itself.

The team with more goals wins. Under the basic FIH rule, a tied score—including 0–0—is a draw. If a tournament match must produce a winner, consult that event’s regulations: the FIH rules refer to tournament regulations for shoot-out procedures, and the federation lists separate regulations for its competitions.
Five cues that make a live match easier to follow
- Watch the shooting circle. A goal requires an attacking play from inside it before the ball crosses the goal-line.
- Track the quarter clock. Standard outdoor FIH play has four 15-minute quarters, with a two-minute break after quarters one and three and a five-minute half-time.
- Notice penalty corners and strokes. These are structured scoring opportunities awarded under the rules, rather than ordinary open-play shots.
- Look for the centre restart after a goal. The opposing team restarts play with a centre pass.
- Keep the player count and equipment in mind. Each team can have no more than 11 players on the field at once. Players use a stick with a flat playing side and play a hard, spherical ball.
Why umpires stop play
The rules prohibit playing the ball with the back of the stick and require players to avoid dangerous play. Players may stop, receive, deflect or play a ball at height when the action is controlled and not dangerous. A whistle after raised-ball play or stick contact may therefore reflect a safety or technique rule, even if the action initially looks like a successful tackle.

- For use on all surfaces
A field player’s stick has a handle and a curved head with a flat left side. The ball is hard and spherical, usually white, though the rules permit an agreed contrasting colour.
Check the rules for the specific competition
These explanations describe standard outdoor play under the FIH Rules of Hockey 2023. FIH maintains separate regulations for outdoor, indoor, Hockey5s and individual events, and a named tournament may set its own timing, tie-break or viewing details. Use the FIH Sport Event Resources index and the event’s official page for the rules and access that apply to the match you plan to watch.
