Start by checking that the right SIM or eSIM line is active, mobile data is enabled, and roaming is allowed for that line and your carrier plan. Then briefly refresh the phone’s network connection. If it still won’t connect, check carrier-supported networks and ask your home carrier to verify roaming access, destination coverage, and account status.
1. Check which line is selected for mobile data
On a phone with two SIMs or eSIMs, the phone may be using a different line from the one you intend to use abroad. Make sure the line you want is turned on and selected for mobile data. On iPhone, select the relevant number in the cellular settings before changing its options. If you are using a travel eSIM, confirm that its line is active; the setup steps can differ by provider.

2. Turn on mobile data and check roaming
Mobile data and data roaming are separate settings. Roaming lets your phone use a cellular network outside the network covered by your carrier; whether you should enable it depends on your carrier and plan. Check the plan and rates before turning it on, since roaming can incur charges.

Menu names and available options vary by phone, Android version, carrier, and network. On Samsung Galaxy phones, look under Settings > Connections > Mobile networks for options such as Mobile data and Data roaming. If your phone’s menus differ, search Settings for “roaming” or “mobile data.”
3. Refresh the phone’s network registration
A phone can take time to register with a network after arrival or after a settings change. Turn on Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds, turn it off, and give the phone time to search for service. Apple recommends this iPhone step to prompt the phone to select a network automatically. The precise effect and menu labels can vary on other phones.

4. Try manual network selection only when automatic selection fails
If the phone still does not register, automatic network selection may not have connected it to an available partner. You can check the phone’s network-operator settings and, if needed, try a network your home carrier supports in that destination. Do not choose a network simply because it appears in the list: roaming access depends on agreements between your carrier and the local network.
Settings and instructions are carrier-specific. For example, Jio’s international-roaming guidance tells its customers to use LTE or LTE Preferred and manually select an available partner if automatic connection fails. That is not a universal instruction to force LTE or select any available network. Check your carrier’s supported-partner list before changing network selection or mode.

5. Check provider settings if you have signal but no data
If the phone shows a cellular connection but apps cannot use mobile data, the Access Point Name (APN) may be relevant. An APN contains provider-specific network settings. On Samsung Galaxy, APNs are available in the mobile network settings, but the correct values depend on the provider. Ask your carrier for the exact settings rather than entering values found for another carrier or guessing.
6. Ask your home carrier to check roaming access
Changing a phone setting cannot add carrier coverage or make an ineligible plan eligible for roaming. Contact the carrier that provides the line and ask it to verify:

- Whether the carrier has a current APN or other provider-specific setting you need.
Apple advises iPhone users to contact their carrier about roaming plans and unresolved roaming problems. Depending on the plan, reaching a data limit can stop data access or reduce speeds.

If your iPhone’s date or time is incorrect after crossing time zones, check that date and time are set automatically in Settings. This is a separate check from roaming and does not replace carrier troubleshooting.

When a local SIM or travel eSIM makes sense
A local SIM or travel eSIM may be an alternative if your home carrier’s roaming service is unavailable or unsuitable, but it will not fix every phone or account problem. Before choosing one, check destination coverage, total cost and data allowance, activation requirements, and whether it works with your device. A physical SIM generally requires a compatible, unlocked phone; an eSIM requires a device that supports eSIM. Consider whether the option lets you keep access to your usual number, especially for calls or verification texts. Apple notes that travelers can often buy or rent a country- or region-specific SIM or eSIM, subject to device compatibility and, for a physical replacement SIM on iPhone, unlock status.
