Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by identifying what disappeared: a local broadcast station such as a local ABC affiliate, or a cable-only network such as ESPN or CNN. An antenna can receive local broadcasts, but it cannot restore a cable-only channel. Your options depend on whether you need the live channel or just particular shows, and whether a replacement service actually carries it in your area.
First, identify what kind of channel you lost
A local TV station broadcasts over the air and may also be carried by cable or satellite. A cable carriage dispute can take that station off your pay-TV lineup even though its broadcast signal may still be available locally. The Federal Communications Commission explains that when a station and pay-TV provider fail to reach an agreement, the provider must stop carrying the station until they do. Read the FCC consumer advisory.

A cable-only network, such as ESPN or CNN, does not transmit a local over-the-air signal for an antenna to pick up. For that kind of channel, look to a network app or a live-TV streaming package that lists the network in your market.

If you lost a local broadcast station, check antenna reception
An over-the-air (OTA) antenna receives broadcast signals directly, independently of your pay-TV provider’s carriage agreement. It is the most direct alternative when the missing channel is a local broadcast station—but reception varies with your location, terrain, obstructions, antenna placement, and setup.

- Check which local stations are receivable at your address before buying an antenna. A tuner cannot find a station if a usable broadcast signal does not reach your home.
- Connect the antenna to your TV’s antenna input and run the TV’s channel scan. Menu wording differs by TV; look for an option such as “Channel Scan,” “Auto Program,” or “Antenna Setup.”
- If you use an OTA tuner or DVR, connect the antenna and follow that device’s setup and channel-scan instructions.
Tablo notes that an antenna is required for its tuner to receive local stations and that valleys, mountains, or rural locations can block broadcasts or have no local broadcasts available. See Tablo’s guidance on missing local channels. An OTA tuner or DVR can help distribute or record antenna channels, but it does not add cable-only networks.
If you want a show rather than the live channel, try official apps
Check the broadcaster’s or network’s own app or website for the program you want. Some services make selected episodes or other programming available, sometimes with a sign-in through your TV provider. AT&T lists ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and CW apps and websites and describes signing in with a provider when prompted. See AT&T’s broadcaster-app guidance.

App access is not a guarantee that you can watch the full live channel during a carriage dispute. TV Everywhere apps may require a TV package that includes the network and successful provider authentication. The network decides what content is available: Roku notes that older seasons may not be licensed, and provider verification or package limits can prevent access. Read Roku’s explanation of cable and satellite content.
For live viewing, verify a streaming service’s lineup before subscribing
Paid live-TV streaming may carry a cable-only network or a local broadcast affiliate, but availability is not universal. Check the service’s lineup for your ZIP code and confirm the exact channel—not just the network name—before subscribing. Also review regional restrictions, blackouts, package requirements, add-ons, and current terms.

Treat any lineup as market-specific and subject to change rather than assuming a service carries every local station everywhere.
Compare alternatives against what you actually need
| Option | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| OTA antenna | A local broadcast station when a usable signal reaches your home | Reception at your address, antenna placement, and whether your TV or tuner can scan channels |
| Broadcaster or network app/site | Selected shows or episodes, not necessarily the full live channel | Whether the program is available, whether provider sign-in is required, and whether your package authenticates |
| Paid live-TV streaming | Live viewing of a cable-only network or local affiliate | Exact lineup for your ZIP code, regional restrictions, blackouts, add-ons, and current terms |
| Another pay-TV provider | A replacement lineup that has the channel now | Confirm current carriage and terms; channel availability can change after network negotiations |
Switching providers does not guarantee permanent access. Frontier says streaming services and other TV providers also face network negotiations and programming changes. See Frontier’s channel-update information.
