Urlwatch can monitor a product page by fetching it on a schedule, filtering the result down to the price, and reporting changes against the previous run. Start with a regular URL job; use its headless-browser navigate mode only if the price is missing because the site renders it with JavaScript. You’ll need a recurring schedule and an enabled reporter to receive alerts.
How Urlwatch detects a price change
Urlwatch compares the output of successive runs. When the monitored output differs, its report includes the URL and a unified diff showing what changed. The goal is to filter the page so the output is the price or a small, stable piece of product information—not the entire page, where unrelated layout or promotional changes can create noisy reports. The tool’s stated purpose is to watch webpage changes and notify you by email, in the terminal, or through third-party services (Urlwatch project).

This detects a change in the page output; it does not establish that the displayed amount is the final checkout price or that the retailer will honor it.

Follow the current Urlwatch installation guide for your operating system and installation method. Once installed, run urlwatch once to initialize its files. Then open the job list with urlwatch --edit. This is where you add or change monitored jobs. Open settings and reporter configuration with urlwatch --edit-config. The job list is generally named urls.yaml, and the settings file urlwatch.yaml; consult the configuration documentation if your installation differs.

Add the product page and choose a fetch mode
Urlwatch supports jobs that retrieve a normal URL, navigate to a page in a headless browser, or run a shell command. For a retailer page, start with a regular url job. If its fetched content does not contain the price because the site inserts it with JavaScript, try navigate, which uses a browser-capable mode. A command job is useful when you already have a shell command that produces the content you want to monitor.
| Mode | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
url |
The server’s ordinary response contains the price. | Simplest place to start; it may miss content added later by JavaScript. |
navigate |
The price appears only after the page runs JavaScript in a browser. | Can handle JavaScript-rendered content, but requires a headless-browser setup. |
command |
A shell command can retrieve or extract the content you want checked. | Depends on the command and its environment; useful when a direct URL job is not suitable. |
Exact job syntax and available options are documented in the Urlwatch introduction and configuration reference. Start with the documented job format rather than guessing a retailer-specific selector: no particular retailer’s markup or selector is established here.

Filter the job to the price and preview it
Use a CSS selector or XPath expression to target the smallest reasonably stable element containing the displayed price. If needed, chain a filter that converts the selected content to text or selects the relevant text. Narrow filtering means unrelated page changes are less likely to appear in the diff, but a selector that is too brittle can stop matching when the retailer changes its markup.
Recommended Free Tools
- Edit the job in
urls.yamlwithurlwatch --edit; add the product URL and the selector or XPath filter supported by the job format. - Run
urlwatch --test-filterto preview the filtered result before relying on alerts. - Check that the preview contains the price you intend to watch, not a sale badge, shipping charge, crossed-out original price, or surrounding page text.
- If the result is empty or overly broad, adjust the selector or filter and preview again. Revisit it if the retailer changes the page structure.
Choosing filter breadth is a trade-off: targeting only the price reduces unrelated diffs, while monitoring a somewhat broader product section may withstand small markup changes but report more irrelevant updates. The configuration documentation notes that changing a filter does not retroactively re-filter stored output, so use --test-filter to inspect what the current configuration produces.

Schedule recurring checks
Urlwatch checks only when the command runs; it does not watch continuously in the background by itself. Schedule the command with cron on Unix-like systems or Windows Task Scheduler on Windows. The official introduction recommends running it no more often than once every 30 minutes (Urlwatch introduction). A change can therefore remain unnoticed until a scheduled run observes it.
- Unix-like systems: create a cron entry that invokes
urlwatchat your chosen interval, using the same account and environment in which you configured the jobs. - Windows: create a recurring task in Task Scheduler that runs the Urlwatch command at the desired interval.
Use the command and interpreter paths appropriate to your installation, and ensure the scheduled account can access the configuration and state files. Do not schedule more frequently than the documented recommendation.

Enable a reporter for notifications
Configure at least one reporter in urlwatch.yaml using urlwatch --edit-config. Urlwatch documentation lists stdout, email, and integrations such as Slack, Discord, Telegram, Matrix, and Pushover; setup details depend on the reporter you choose (configuration reference). Do not assume that email or another notification channel is enabled automatically. Confirm the reporter configuration and run Urlwatch manually so you can see whether it produces the expected report.
Troubleshoot missing or noisy price alerts
- The price is absent from the result: inspect the fetched content and filter preview. If the price is inserted client-side, try
navigateand follow the headless-browser setup in the official documentation. - The filter returns nothing: the selector may not match the current markup, or the price may not be present in that job’s fetched output. Use
urlwatch --test-filter, then revise the selector or job mode. - Reports contain unrelated changes: narrow the selector to the price element or a smaller stable region, and preview the result. Avoid narrowing so far that minor markup changes break the match.
- The job stops tracking the displayed price: the retailer may have changed its page structure. Recheck the selector and filtered output, then maintain the job configuration.
- No notification arrives: confirm that the scheduled command is running and that a reporter is enabled and correctly configured in
urlwatch.yaml. - An alert arrives later than expected: Urlwatch can only detect a change on a run that observes it; check the schedule and allow for the interval between runs.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want a screenshot rather than a locally configured Urlwatch job, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can capture a page as an image or PDF; it is not a replacement for Urlwatch’s scheduled change comparison or price-diff alerts.
