You can wash a down winter jacket safely when you follow its care label, use a cleaner formulated for down, and dry the insulation completely. Check the label first: general advice cannot override instructions for your specific jacket.
Before washing, check the jacket’s care label
Read the jacket’s label before choosing a wash method or dryer setting. Follow its instructions for washing, water temperature, drying, and any removable parts; remove parts the label says should not be washed. If it prohibits machine washing or tumble drying, use the label’s alternate method or the garment maker’s instructions.

Choose a washer and cleaner that suit down
Use a suitable washer—or wash by hand
If machine washing is allowed, use a front-loading washer or a top-loader without an agitator. Outdoor Research warns that an agitator can damage the baffles that hold the down. Don’t force a bulky jacket into a machine where it cannot move freely; use hand-wash instructions instead. Nikwax provides separate machine- and hand-wash directions for its Down Wash, but follow the instructions for the cleaner and jacket you have rather than treating one product’s settings as universal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse down-specific cleaner and rinse thoroughly
Choose a cleaner made for down rather than conventional laundry detergent, which Outdoor Research advises against for down gear. Use the amount, temperature, and cycle specified by both the cleaner’s label and the jacket’s care label. Rinse thoroughly so cleaner does not remain in the insulation. Nikwax’s machine-wash directions recommend a gentle approach and slow spin; use the directions for your own product.

Remove water gently after washing
Wet down is heavy. Nikwax advises using repeated spin cycles and increasing the speed incrementally, rather than immediately spinning rapidly while the jacket still holds a lot of water, which may damage internal baffles. Follow the cleaner and garment instructions, and handle the jacket gently when moving it.
Dry the jacket until the down is fully dry
If the care label permits tumble drying, use low heat and a dryer with enough room for the jacket to move. Drying may take more than one cycle. Between cycles, check the insulation and gently tease apart any clumps by hand. Continue until the clumps have disappeared and the down is dry throughout: the shell can feel dry before the insulation inside is.

Clean tennis balls or dryer balls may help separate clumps in the dryer; Outdoor Research and REI mention tennis balls as an option. They are not required, and they do not replace checking the down between cycles. If the label does not permit tumble drying, follow its alternate drying method.
Reproof only if water repellency needs refreshing
Reproofing is optional, not a required step after every wash. If the jacket’s water repellency needs refreshing, Nikwax says Down Proof is for clean down gear. Follow both the treatment’s directions and the jacket’s care instructions.

How often should you wash a down jacket?
There is no universal washing schedule established here. Outdoor Research attributes a recommendation to wash once a month to Charlie Berg, its Senior Product Manager for Outerwear, specifically for heavy, weekly use. Treat that as the company’s guidance for that use case, not a general rule; follow the jacket maker’s care advice and wash when the garment needs it.
