1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo protect a down jacket’s insulation, follow the care label for that exact garment. If machine washing is allowed, use a gentle cycle and a cleaner formulated for down, rinse thoroughly, then tumble dry on low heat with clean tennis balls or dryer balls if the label permits. Pause to break up clumps, and do not store the jacket until it is completely dry. Wash temperatures and advice for drying without a machine differ, so there is no safe universal setting.
Check that your jacket can be washed
Start with the jacket’s care label, not a general rule for down. Shell fabrics, construction and individual garment instructions can differ. Arc’teryx’s care guidance says, “Always check the care label on the product for exact guidelines.” If the label rules out machine washing or gives a specific method, follow it. A general down-care guide cannot override instructions for your particular jacket.

If the label is unclear, check the jacket maker’s current care instructions for the exact garment before proceeding. Do not assume that every down jacket can go in a household washer or dryer. The method below applies only when the garment’s instructions allow the relevant machine-washing and drying steps. Washing and drying are separate decisions: a label might allow one process but not the other, so verify both rather than treating permission to wash as permission to tumble dry.
It also helps to decide how you will dry the jacket before starting the wash. Drying takes patience, and the cited guidance ranges from one to three hours to upwards of three hours in a tumble dryer. If you do not have an appropriate dryer, check the maker’s current no-dryer instructions first. Arc’teryx recommends a ReBIRD Service Centre in that situation, while an older Patagonia article describes air drying; those options are not interchangeable universal instructions.

Gather the supplies
- A down-specific cleaner: Use a low-residue cleaner formulated for down and follow its own dosing directions. Examples named in the care guidance include Nikwax Down Wash Direct and Arc’teryx Nu Down Detergent; these are examples, not a requirement to buy a particular product. Compare the product label and make sure its directions are compatible with your garment’s care instructions.
- A suitable washer: A front-loading machine is preferred in Patagonia and REI guidance. A top-loader may be an option only if the jacket’s instructions allow it; Patagonia describes using hand-wash or delicate, while REI advises checking the garment instructions. Do not assume that every top-loader, or every cycle on a top-loader, is suitable.
- A dryer, if permitted: Low-heat tumble drying is the shared recommendation in the cited guidance when the garment permits it. Check the label before relying on a dryer, even if the washer method is allowed.
- Clean tennis balls or dryer balls: Two clean balls can help separate clumps as the jacket tumbles. Dryer balls are optional; clean tennis balls are an alternative, so you do not need to purchase a dedicated accessory if you already have clean tennis balls and the label permits them.
- An optional mesh laundry bag: Arc’teryx says a laundry net can help protect the garment during washing. It is an optional protective measure, not a substitute for checking the care label or selecting an allowed cycle.
Do not add bleach or fabric softener. Avoid substituting ordinary detergent for a down-specific cleaner unless the jacket maker explicitly directs otherwise: Patagonia says traditional detergent can strip down’s natural oils and affect loft, and Arc’teryx cautions against detergent that is not down-focused. Those are manufacturers’ care rationales, not quantified independent test results. Follow the down cleaner’s own dosing directions; adding extra cleaner is not a way to improve the wash and can make thorough rinsing more important.
Wash the jacket gently
- Prepare the garment. Close fasteners and loosen drawcords as appropriate. Secure hook-and-loop cuffs if the jacket has them. Put it in a mesh laundry bag if you are using one. These preparation steps help keep loose closures from catching or rubbing against the garment during the wash, while the bag provides an optional extra layer of protection.
- Choose a washer and cycle allowed by the label. Use a front-loader if available and permitted. For a top-loader, proceed only if the jacket’s instructions allow it, and choose a gentle setting such as hand-wash or delicate where available. Patagonia mentions hand-wash or delicate for a top-loader; this is not blanket approval for every jacket or machine. If the label specifies a different method, use that instead.
- Set the water temperature from the garment instructions. Do not treat one company’s temperature as a universal down-jacket setting. Arc’teryx’s guide specifies medium heat at 40°C/104°F, while Patagonia’s general down-care page says to use cold water. That difference is why the jacket label takes priority. Do not choose a temperature simply because it appears in instructions for another brand’s jacket.
- Add the down cleaner as directed. Use the cleaner’s stated dose rather than guessing or adding extra product. The aim is to clean the garment without leaving avoidable residue. Nikwax Down Wash Direct and Arc’teryx Nu Down Detergent are named examples, but the care process matters more than choosing either named product: use a suitable down-focused cleaner that follows the directions for your garment.
- Rinse thoroughly. Follow any rinse instructions on the jacket label. Arc’teryx recommends a double rinse to help clear detergent residue. Do not add fabric softener or bleach. If the label and washer offer a rinse option, use the method specified for the jacket rather than skipping a rinse to shorten the cycle.
If you are unsure whether the washer setting or temperature matches the label, stop and check the garment maker’s instructions rather than choosing a setting based on a different jacket’s care guide. The temperature contrast between Arc’teryx and Patagonia is a useful reminder: both give specific advice for their care guidance, but neither setting is a universal default for every down jacket.
Dry it until the fill is fully dry and evenly distributed
Drying is a slow part of the process, and a jacket can feel dry on the outside while down inside its baffles remains clumped or damp. If the care label permits tumble drying, use low heat and add two clean tennis balls or dryer balls. The balls help separate clumps as the jacket tumbles; they do not replace checking the garment during the process. Patagonia also suggests a large, heavy-cotton towel as an alternative aid, while Arc’teryx describes dryer balls or clean tennis balls. Follow the jacket maker’s instructions for whether to use a towel or balls.

- Begin with low heat. Do not switch to high heat to hurry the process. Use the dryer setting allowed by the care label. Low heat is the common recommendation in the cited maker guidance, but the label remains the authority for the particular garment.
- Pause and inspect periodically. Turn the garment and check its baffles. If you find persistent clumps, gently pull them apart by hand before restarting the dryer. Arc’teryx advises periodically turning the garment, and Patagonia’s care story also recommends manually separating clumps. Check more than the outer surface; the goal is to see whether fill is still gathered in particular sections.
- Continue in cycles. Repeat the low-heat drying and inspection until the down is evenly distributed, the jacket feels lump-free and it is completely dry. A fixed timer is not a reliable endpoint. If clumps remain after a cycle, separate them and continue instead of assuming that the next short interval will finish the job.
- Check before putting it away. Make sure there are no remaining damp or clumped areas. Do not pack or store the jacket damp: Arc’teryx warns that damp storage can contribute to clumping or mould. The finish line is a fully dry jacket with fill that is evenly distributed, not simply a warm or dry-feeling shell.
The time estimates differ because they are practical guidance rather than guarantees:
| Source | Published drying estimate | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| REI Expert Advice, page accessed 2026 | One to three hours | REI advises continuing low-heat cycles until the jacket is lump-free and fully dry. |
| Arc’teryx down-care guidance, page accessed 2026 | Upwards of three hours | Arc’teryx says to be prepared for a long drying process. |
Actual drying time can vary. Use the jacket’s fully dry, lump-free condition—not either estimate—as the stopping test. REI’s instruction is to keep resetting the timer until the jacket is lump-free and fully dry; Arc’teryx likewise emphasizes that down garments take a long time to dry. Plan for several checks rather than leaving the dryer at a single setting for an assumed fixed duration.
If you do not have access to a suitable dryer
Advice on air drying is not consistent. Current Arc’teryx guidance recommends taking the jacket to a ReBIRD Service Centre if a dryer is unavailable, and cautions that air drying alone may not restore the same loft and could affect performance. Patagonia’s older down-care story, published in 2011, describes laying the jacket flat on a towel in a warm, dry place away from direct sunlight, turning it and separating clumps periodically. It estimates that this can take from a couple of days to more than a week, depending on humidity.

Because that air-drying advice is older and conflicts with Arc’teryx’s current guidance, do not treat it as a universal method. Check the current instructions for your own jacket. If its maker recommends a service centre, follow that route; if it gives a specific no-dryer method, use those directions. Do not pack or store the garment while any part remains damp.
Recommended Free Tools
If you follow the older Patagonia approach because your garment maker allows it, the details matter: lay the jacket flat on a towel in a warm, dry place, keep it out of direct sunlight, turn it periodically and separate clumps by hand. Expect a much longer process than tumble drying; Patagonia’s 2011 estimate is a couple of days to more than a week depending on humidity. This is an older alternative, not a promise that air drying will produce the same loft as a low-heat tumble dryer. When the maker’s current recommendation is different, follow that recommendation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming all down jackets share one wash setting: The maker guidance itself differs on water temperature. Use the exact garment label and current instructions.
- Assuming machine washing is allowed: Do not put a jacket in a washer simply because it is filled with down. Confirm that the exact garment permits machine washing.
- Using a cycle the jacket does not permit: Front-loaders are preferred in the cited advice, but even a top-loader or gentle setting is not automatically right for every garment.
- Using bleach or fabric softener: The cited care guidance says to avoid both.
- Leaving detergent residue: Rinse thoroughly and use the maker’s rinse directions; Arc’teryx recommends two rinses.
- Trying to speed drying with high heat: The cited instructions favor low heat where tumble drying is allowed.
- Stopping when the outside merely feels dry: Check the baffles, separate clumps and continue drying until the fill is fully dry and lump-free.
- Expecting dryer balls to do all the work: Balls help separate clumps, but periodic checks and manual separation may still be needed.
- Storing the jacket damp: Wait until it is completely dry to reduce the risk of clumping or mould.
Quick decision guide
Before starting, answer three questions in order: Does the exact jacket label permit washing? Does it permit the washer and cycle you plan to use? Does it permit tumble drying? If any answer is no or unclear, pause and consult the maker’s current instructions. If machine washing and low-heat drying are both allowed, use a down-specific cleaner, rinse well, dry with balls if allowed, and check the baffles until the fill is completely dry. If the dryer is unavailable, do not assume an air-drying technique is equivalent; use the maker’s stated alternative or service recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I wash a down jacket?
First check the care label for the exact jacket. If machine washing is allowed, use a permitted gentle cycle, a cleaner formulated for down, and the label’s water temperature. Rinse thoroughly; Arc’teryx recommends two rinses. Do not use bleach or fabric softener.
Can I use regular detergent on a down jacket?
Patagonia and Arc’teryx recommend a down-specific cleaner. Patagonia says traditional detergent can strip down’s natural oils and affect loft, while Arc’teryx cautions against detergent that is not down-focused. Follow the garment maker’s instructions and the cleaner’s dosing directions.

How long does a down jacket take to dry in a dryer?
REI gives an estimate of one to three hours, while Arc’teryx says to be prepared for upwards of three hours. These are practical estimates, not guarantees. Continue low-heat cycles and checks until the jacket is fully dry and lump-free.
What if I don’t have access to a drying machine?
Check the jacket maker’s current recommendation. Arc’teryx recommends a ReBIRD Service Centre and cautions that air drying alone may not restore the same loft. Patagonia’s 2011 care story describes flat air drying away from direct sunlight with periodic turning and clump separation, but estimates a couple of days to more than a week and its advice conflicts with Arc’teryx’s current guidance. Do not treat air drying as universally suitable.
Can I wash a down jacket in a top-loading washer?
Only if the jacket’s own care instructions allow it. Patagonia describes using a hand-wash or delicate setting on a top-loader, while REI advises checking the particular garment instructions. A front-loading washer is preferred in the cited care guidance, but the label takes priority.

Let the exact jacket label determine whether and how to wash and dry it. When machine washing is allowed, choose a gentle permitted cycle, use a down-specific cleaner, rinse well and tumble dry on low only if permitted. Check and separate clumps until the insulation is evenly distributed and fully dry; if you lack a dryer, follow the maker’s current alternative rather than assuming air drying will restore loft.
