How to downgrade from Windows 11 to Windows 10 safely

Use Windows 11’s built-in Go back option within the usual 10-day window, or prepare a verified backup and Microsoft installation USB for a clean install. This guide explains data loss, drivers, activation and Windows 10’s end of support.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can return to Windows 10 safely in one of two ways: use Settings > System > Recovery > Go back while Microsoft’s short rollback window is still available, or back up your data and perform a clean Windows 10 installation when it is not. Microsoft says the built-in option is available “in most cases” for 10 days after the upgrade. It preserves personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed afterward and resets settings.

There is an important 2026 qualification: Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Standard technical assistance, feature updates and security updates have ended, although eligible consumer PCs may use Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) through October 12, 2027. Treat a downgrade as a compatibility or recovery measure, not as a return to a fully supported operating system.

Choose the right downgrade route first

Open Settings > System > Recovery and look for Go back. The exact wording or layout can vary slightly by Windows version and device, but the Recovery page is the correct place to check.

Route When it applies Files and settings Preparation Main risk
Go back The option is still shown, usually within 10 days of upgrading Personal files are kept; newer apps and drivers are removed; settings changes are reset Keep the rollback folders, remove accounts added after the upgrade and have the upgrade USB available if one was used Apps changed after the upgrade may be unavailable or fail to work correctly after the return
Clean installation Go back is missing or the rollback files were deleted The target Windows installation, apps and settings can be erased; restore files from a separate backup Verified backup, Windows installation media, drivers, installers and account or recovery credentials Data loss, missing drivers or activation problems if preparation is incomplete

Windows 10 is the destination in both cases, but its ordinary support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says eligible consumer devices can receive protection through the Windows 10 Consumer ESU program until October 12, 2027; eligibility and enrollment conditions must be checked in Microsoft’s current information rather than assumed.

Check the built-in “Go back” option

1. Save anything you are working on

Close applications and save open documents before starting. Although Microsoft describes the rollback as keeping personal files, an interruption, failing drive or unrelated problem can still put data at risk. Copy any newly created files to a separate location before you select the rollback command.

2. Confirm the rollback files still exist

Windows needs the windows.old and $windows.~bt folders created during the upgrade. Do not delete, compress or clean these folders while deciding whether to return to Windows 10. Disk Cleanup or storage-management tools may remove them, which can make the built-in option disappear.

3. Check accounts and the upgrade USB

Microsoft says accounts added after the upgrade should be removed before going back. If a USB drive was used for the Windows 11 upgrade, keep that drive available. These conditions are easy to overlook when a PC has been used for several days, especially if another family member or administrator account was created.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Start the rollback

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Recovery.
  3. Under recovery options, select Go back if it is present.
  4. Read the reason prompts and follow the on-screen instructions. Windows may ask you to check for updates before leaving Windows 11; that choice is yours, but it does not extend the rollback deadline.
  5. Review the warning about removed apps and drivers, then confirm the return to the previous Windows version.

The computer will restart several times. Keep it connected to AC power and do not force a shutdown while the process is running. The duration depends on the drive and the amount of system data; Windows does not provide a single guaranteed completion time.

What the built-in rollback changes

The rollback is not a complete snapshot restore. It returns the operating-system files and configuration to the previous Windows version while preserving personal files in the user profile.

  • Personal files: Microsoft says these are kept.
  • Apps: Applications installed after the Windows 11 upgrade are removed. Microsoft also warns that apps added, removed or updated after upgrading may not be available or may not work properly after the return.
  • Drivers: Drivers installed after the upgrade are removed. Hardware that depended on a newer driver may need the Windows 10-compatible package installed afterward.
  • Settings: Settings changes made since the upgrade are reset. Record important preferences, VPN details, application options and accessibility settings before starting.

Before selecting Go back, make a note of application names, license details and configuration values you will need to reinstall. The rollback does not provide a general archive of every post-upgrade change.

When “Go back” is unavailable

After the rollback period, or after the required folders have been removed, Microsoft’s documented route is to manually back up your files and perform a clean installation. Microsoft’s Windows 11 FAQ explains that users beyond the 10-day period need this approach: Upgrade to Windows 11: FAQ.

A clean installation is fundamentally different from the built-in rollback. It can erase the Windows 11 installation, installed programs, user accounts and settings on the target partitions. Do not begin until you can restore everything you need from an independent, readable backup.

Prepare a clean installation safely

Build a complete file backup

Copy documents, Desktop files, pictures, videos, downloads, project folders, browser bookmarks and any application data that is not synchronized elsewhere. Also check email archives, password-manager vaults, game saves, virtual machines and locally stored media. Microsoft’s reset guidance likewise tells users to back up important files before a destructive recovery operation: Reset your PC.

Use a separate drive or another storage location rather than leaving the only copy on the Windows system drive. Open several backed-up files from the destination, or otherwise verify that the backup can actually be read. A backup that was never tested is not a reliable recovery plan.

Collect credentials and recovery information

Make sure you can sign in to the Microsoft account or local account you intend to use after installation. If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, locate the recovery key before wiping the installation. Keep application license information and two-factor authentication recovery methods available; a clean install may remove locally stored sign-in sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Locate drivers and installers

Before erasing Windows 11, download or otherwise obtain Windows 10-compatible network, storage, chipset, graphics and other device drivers for the specific PC. Save the network driver on the installation-media drive or another removable device so you can get online if Windows 10 does not include it. Also collect installers for essential applications. These are practical precautions rather than a universal Microsoft hardware checklist, because driver and activation requirements differ by model and edition.

Create official Windows installation media

Use Microsoft’s installation-media instructions, not an unofficial ISO mirror or an activation workaround: Create installation media for Windows. Microsoft says installation media can be created on USB flash media and used to install a new copy of Windows or perform a clean installation. The cited guidance does not establish a universal minimum USB capacity, so check the current media-creation tool and use a drive with enough space for the files it downloads.

  1. On a working PC, open Microsoft’s installation-media page and select the Windows 10 media-creation option offered there.
  2. Download and run Microsoft’s tool, accepting its license terms.
  3. Choose the language, edition and architecture that match your intended Windows 10 installation and existing license where applicable.
  4. Select the option to create installation media and choose a USB flash drive.
  5. Let the tool download and write the files. The USB will be reformatted, so do not use a drive containing the only copy of personal data.
  6. Safely eject the completed drive and connect it to the PC you plan to reinstall.

Microsoft’s page can change as Windows 10 distribution and lifecycle policies change. Follow the labels shown by the current tool rather than relying on an old screenshot or a third-party download.

Perform the clean Windows 10 installation

1. Boot from the installation USB

Restart the PC with the installation USB connected. Use the device’s boot menu or firmware settings to select the USB drive; the key varies by manufacturer. If the computer starts Windows 11 normally, consult the PC maker’s current boot-menu instructions instead of guessing a key combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Select the installation basics

At Windows Setup, choose the language, time and keyboard options, then continue to installation. Select the Windows 10 edition that matches the license you expect to use. Choosing a different edition can prevent automatic activation even when the hardware previously had a valid digital entitlement.

3. Choose a custom installation

When Setup asks which installation type to use, select the custom option for a new installation. Review every disk and partition shown. Deleting or formatting a partition destroys the data on it; do not touch a partition that contains your verified backup or a manufacturer recovery environment you still need. If you are uncertain which partition contains Windows, stop and identify it before continuing.

4. Let Setup complete without interruption

Windows will copy files and restart the computer several times. Leave the USB connected until Setup tells you otherwise, but if the machine loops back to the beginning of Setup after a restart, remove the USB or choose the internal drive from the boot menu. Keep the PC powered throughout the installation.

5. Finish first-run setup

Complete the on-screen account, privacy, network and update choices. Connect to the internet when practical so Windows can obtain available updates and so activation can be checked. If no network driver is present, install the saved manufacturer driver first, then reconnect.

After Windows 10 starts

Install device drivers and updates

Install the PC manufacturer’s Windows 10 drivers in a sensible order, beginning with network and chipset or storage drivers when those are required for other hardware. Then use Windows Update and restart when requested. Verify Device Manager for devices with warning icons and test Wi-Fi, audio, graphics, sleep, Bluetooth, printers and external displays.

Restore data carefully

Copy backed-up files into the appropriate folders only after confirming the new installation is stable. Reinstall applications from their legitimate installers, sign in again and restore application-specific settings. Keep the backup untouched until you have opened the files and confirmed that the programs you need work.

Check activation without assuming it

Open Windows activation settings and review the status. Activation can depend on the PC’s original OEM entitlement, a retail or digital license, the installed edition and hardware changes. The available information does not establish that every configuration will reactivate automatically. If Windows reports an activation problem, use Microsoft’s official activation support for the device and license details rather than unofficial keys or scripts.

Downgrading unsupported Windows 11 hardware

Microsoft recommends rolling back to Windows 10 immediately when Windows 11 was installed on a device that does not meet Windows 11 system requirements: Ways to install Windows 11. That recommendation addresses the unsupported Windows 11 installation; it does not restore ordinary Windows 10 support. Windows 10’s standard technical assistance, feature updates and security updates ended on October 14, 2025, so assess the security implications before choosing it as a long-term operating system.

Eligible consumer devices may be able to enroll in Windows 10 Consumer ESU through October 12, 2027. Microsoft’s current eligibility and enrollment rules control who qualifies, so check them before relying on ESU as a plan.

Troubleshoot common downgrade problems

“Go back” is missing

The usual causes are that the 10-day period has passed or the windows.old and $windows.~bt folders were removed. Do not try to recreate those folders manually. Use the backup-and-clean-install route instead.

The rollback reports that files are missing

Stop and read the message. If Windows cannot find required rollback data, forcing the process can leave the system unbootable. Confirm that the original upgrade USB is available if one was used, and otherwise preserve your files and prepare installation media.

An application no longer works

This is an expected consequence when the app or its driver was installed or updated after the Windows 11 upgrade. Reinstall a Windows 10-compatible version using the installer and license information you saved. If no compatible release exists, check the developer’s current support documentation before deleting the backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware is not detected after a clean install

Install the model-specific Windows 10 drivers you collected before the wipe. Network access may require installing the saved Ethernet or Wi-Fi driver offline first. Check Device Manager and the PC manufacturer’s support page for the exact model rather than using a random driver package.

Activation fails

Confirm that the installed edition matches the license and that the PC is online. Record the exact activation error and contact Microsoft’s activation support if it persists. Do not infer from another computer’s result that the same license will transfer to this hardware.

Safety checklist

  • Check Settings > System > Recovery before considering a clean install.
  • Confirm the 10-day rollback window has not expired.
  • Do not delete windows.old or $windows.~bt while rollback remains a possibility.
  • Remove accounts added after upgrading and locate the upgrade USB if applicable.
  • Back up files to separate storage and test that the backup opens.
  • Save encryption recovery keys, account credentials, application installers and licenses.
  • Obtain model-specific Windows 10 drivers, including an offline network driver.
  • Create installation media with Microsoft’s current tool.
  • During custom setup, verify every partition before formatting or deleting anything.
  • After installation, install drivers, run updates, test hardware, restore data and check activation.
  • Consider Windows 10’s ended standard support and verify current ESU eligibility before treating the downgrade as a long-term solution.

Official guidance

Microsoft’s rollback instructions cover the limited-time return, retained files, removed apps and drivers, reset settings and folder prerequisites: Go back to the previous version of Windows. Its Windows 10 lifecycle notice explains the October 14, 2025 end of support and the consumer ESU date: Windows 10 support has ended on October 14, 2025.
