Remove formed stool, store used diapers as the maker directs, wash them on a suitable full cycle with an appropriate detergent, and keep heat within the product’s limits.
1. Identify what needs washing
Before choosing a cycle, check the diaper’s care label or the maker’s current instructions. A pocket diaper may have a waterproof shell and a separate absorbent insert; other systems use prefolds or flats. Those materials can have different temperature and drying limits, so do not assume one setting is safe for every piece.

If the instructions say to remove inserts from pockets or fasten laundry tabs, do so before washing. Follow any product-specific preparation instructions for a first wash as well.
2. Remove formed stool and wash your hands
For a diaper soiled with formed stool, put the stool in the toilet rather than leaving it on the diaper. The CDC’s home hygiene guidance says, “If the child pooped into the diaper, discard poop in a toilet,” and advises thorough handwashing afterward. Keep soiled items away from surfaces that are difficult to clean.

A diaper sprayer is one optional way to rinse stool into the toilet; it is not necessary to follow the CDC’s disposal instruction. Use it only if it suits your setup and the diaper maker’s directions.
3. Store used diapers until wash day
Use the storage method recommended by the diaper maker. A lidded bin or washable moisture-proof wet bag can keep used diapers contained; a water-resistant, odor-resistant container is another option. Keep diapers as dry as the product instructions specify rather than assuming that soaking them is required.

Wash on the schedule your manufacturer recommends. Timing differs by brand: Tide advises not leaving diapers unwashed for more than a few days, while RagaBabe advises washing its diapers at least every other day. These are product-specific recommendations, not a single schedule established for every cloth diaper.

4. Choose a wash cycle and temperature for the materials
Use the garment label or current brand instructions to select water temperature, cycle, and any other settings. Tide’s general guidance is to use the highest temperature the garment permits—not the highest setting your washer offers. That distinction matters for waterproof shells and elastic-containing parts.

Examples of why instructions differ
- Rearz says its pocket shell and insert can be washed together on a full warm-water cycle, but recommends hot water for its prefolds and flats.
- RagaBabe specifies a warm wash up to 120°F for its diapers and separate hot washing for inserts.
These examples apply to those makers’ products; they are not interchangeable recipes. If a product label conflicts with a general laundry suggestion, follow the product’s care instructions.
5. Use detergent and additives cautiously
Choose a laundry detergent that is suitable for the diaper materials and follow both the detergent label and diaper maker’s directions. There is no established universal best detergent in the cited guidance: Tide promotes its own detergent, while RagaBabe recommends Country Save powder and notes some customers use Tide Original Powder. Those are brand recommendations, not independent comparative test results.

Check warnings before using bleach, fabric softener, or other additives. RagaBabe warns against bleach and fabric softener for its products; Rearz advises avoiding bleach-containing detergents and softeners for its products, and also cautions against natural oils and enzymes in detergent. Do not generalize those restrictions to a different diaper without checking its instructions.
6. Dry without exceeding the care limits
Use the drying method and temperature permitted for each component. Line drying is an option for the brands cited, and some products allow tumble drying at a specified temperature. Rearz recommends hang drying when possible and allows low heat for some items; RagaBabe permits warm tumble drying or line drying for its diapers. Tide says line drying is an option and suggests medium heat only when the garment permits it.

Separate shells and absorbent pieces for drying if the maker’s instructions call for it. Do not apply a hot dryer setting to a waterproof or elastic-containing component unless its care instructions allow it.
