Compare ADR tools by repository fit, authoring, indexing, lifecycle support, discovery, and upkeep. Learn when Markdown is enough and when to add a CLI, editor, portal, or published log.

The best tool for an architecture decision record (ADR) is usually the one that fits the way your team already writes, reviews, and finds technical decisions. For many teams, a version-controlled Markdown directory is enough; add a template, CLI, editor, portal, or publishing tool only when it solves a real gap in authoring or discovery.

What an ADR tool needs to help you do

An ADR records one architecturally significant decision, including its context, rationale, chosen direction, and consequences. A collection of ADRs forms a decision log. AWS Prescriptive Guidance identifies decisions about system structure, non-functional requirements such as security or availability, dependencies, and interfaces as examples of matters worth recording. Microsoft Learn recommends that each record be concise and factual, include context and rationale, and remain understandable on its own even when it links to supporting documents.

That purpose sets the selection criteria: where records live, how people author them, how they are indexed and searched, how changes in direction are tracked, how records connect to code review, and how much setup and upkeep the workflow requires. A larger feature list is not automatically a better fit.

Compare the main ADR workflows

Workflow What it offers Best fit Trade-off to consider
Git and Markdown Decision files live in the project repository and are committed with code. A consistent naming convention makes them easier to scan. Teams comfortable maintaining documentation alongside software. Indexing, lifecycle conventions, and cross-repository discovery may need to be handled by the team. (Community guide; tool directory.)
MADR A Markdown ADR format with full, bare, and minimal templates. Version 4.0.0 was released on 2024-09-17. Teams that want a structured starting point without leaving Markdown and version control. A template standardizes the record but does not, by itself, provide a portal or cross-repository search. (MADR.)
CLI tools adr-tools provides scripts for the Nygard format. MADR-oriented options include adr-log for an index, pyadr for lifecycle states, and Log4brains for CLI creation and rendered publication. Teams that want repeatable creation or maintenance tasks in a command-line workflow. Check project maturity and dependencies; the tools directory advises users to assess maturity themselves. Log4brains documents Node.js, npm or Yarn, and Git prerequisites. (Tool directory; Log4brains.)
Form-based editor ADR Manager connects to GitHub for form-based editing; a VS Code extension is also listed. Authors who prefer guided fields or editing from their IDE. Confirm that its repository integration and authoring flow match how your team reviews and manages records. (Tool directory.)
Developer portal The Backstage ADR plugin supports exploring and searching ADRs in a developer portal, including across multiple organizations and repositories. Organizations that need a shared discovery point for decisions spread across repositories. A portal is an additional layer to operate; it is unnecessary if a repository directory already makes decisions easy to find. (Tool directory.)
Rendered decision log Log4brains documents local preview, CLI-based creation, static publication, and optional repository configuration for GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket links. Teams that want a browsable published log as well as versioned source records. Publication and repository configuration add setup and maintenance beyond storing Markdown files. Documented prerequisites include Node.js, npm or Yarn, and Git. (Log4brains.)
Commercial web app The tool directory lists Loqbooq as a commercial web app with Slack integration for ADR-inspired decision logs. Teams considering a hosted, collaboration-oriented workflow. Current availability and terms are not established in the reviewed material; verify them directly before adopting it. (Tool directory.)

Choose by the problem you need to solve

Start with the repository if the team already works in Git

A directory of Markdown files in the project repository is a sound baseline. It keeps decisions near the code they explain and lets the team use its existing version-control and review practices. Pick one naming convention and apply it consistently; the community guide’s example uses an imperative phrase, lowercase words, dashes, and Markdown.

Add structure when authors need a prompt

If authors routinely omit context, rationale, or consequences, adopt a shared template. MADR offers full, bare, and minimal templates, so a team can choose how much guidance to provide while staying with Markdown. A template can improve consistency, but it cannot ensure that the decision log stays discoverable or that records are maintained.

Add an index or lifecycle support when maintenance is the bottleneck

For teams that want to generate or maintain records from the command line, the tools directory lists adr-tools for the Nygard format and MADR-related tools including adr-log and pyadr. It describes adr-log as an index-maintenance tool and pyadr as supporting lifecycle states. Choose based on the format and maintenance task you actually use, and check current project activity before depending on a tool.

Use a portal or published site when discovery spans repositories

A local file list may work well inside one repository but become difficult to navigate when decisions are scattered across an organization. The Backstage ADR plugin is listed for portal-based exploration and search across multiple organizations and repositories. Log4brains instead offers a rendered decision log, with local preview and static publication documented. These solve related but different discovery needs: a portal helps people search across sources, while a rendered log presents records as a browsable publication.

Consider a web editor when Markdown is a barrier

ADR Manager is listed as a web UI that connects to GitHub and edits ADRs through forms, with a VS Code extension also available. This may suit authors who prefer guided editing, but assess how well the integration fits your repository permissions, review process, and team habits before making it the default.

How to evaluate a candidate tool

  1. Decide where the canonical record belongs. Choose between records beside code in version control and a separate editor or portal. If you use a separate interface, establish how its records remain accessible to maintainers.
  2. Match authoring to the team. Determine whether Markdown and a template are enough, or whether authors need a form, IDE extension, or CLI.
  3. Test the discovery path. Decide whether a directory index will do, or whether people need search across repositories or a browsable published log.
  4. Set lifecycle expectations. Work out how the team will represent proposals, acceptance, rejection, deprecation, and superseding decisions. Use a tool’s lifecycle feature only if it matches the team’s agreed process.
  5. Connect decisions to code review. Make it straightforward to link a relevant ADR from a change review when the change applies to or conflicts with that decision.
  6. Account for upkeep. Check dependencies, setup, hosting, repository integration, and signs of active maintenance. The ADR tools directory, updated 2026-09-23, specifically cautions users to assess project maturity. Tool status can change.

Keep the decision log useful after adoption

  1. Choose a shared format and location. Establish a versioned decision directory and a template; keep the log discoverable from the project documentation.
  2. Write one significant decision per record. Explain the context and rationale, state the selected option, and record the consequences so the decision makes sense without requiring a reader to reconstruct it from unrelated documents.
  3. Assign an owner. AWS recommends that ADR owners maintain and communicate the record’s content.
  4. Link records from relevant reviews. A link in code review helps reviewers and future maintainers check whether a proposed change follows or alters an existing decision.
  5. Record a changed direction as a new decision. AWS describes accepted or rejected ADRs as immutable. If an approved new decision changes direction, record it separately and mark the earlier record superseded rather than silently rewriting the historical decision.

What the guidance says about ownership and clarity

Microsoft Learn’s Maintain an architecture decision record (ADR), last updated 2026-04-13, advises: “Always include context and rationale.” AWS Prescriptive Guidance’s Architectural decision record process says: “Each author who is the owner of an ADR should actively maintain and communicate the ADR content.” These recommendations matter regardless of whether the team chooses a plain directory, an editor, or a portal: the record must remain understandable and maintained by someone.
