Start with the care label: it takes priority over any general washing advice. When the label allows, a cautious routine is to turn activewear inside out, wash it in cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, skip fabric softener and dryer sheets, and air dry. If the label permits a dryer, use low or no heat.
How to wash activewear: a careful routine
- Check the care label. Follow its washing and drying instructions for that garment. Activewear can combine different fibers, finishes, seams, and construction details, so a general routine cannot replace the tag.
- Separate items as needed. Sort by color and fabric when appropriate, and keep garments away from zippers, hooks, or buttons that could snag them.
- Turn garments inside out. This helps protect the outer surface, logos, and prints, while putting the side that contacts sweat toward the wash. See Under Armour’s compression-shirt care guidance and Whirlpool’s leggings instructions.
- Use a mesh laundry bag if useful. It is optional, but can help limit friction, stretching, snagging, and tangling, especially for delicate pieces or garments washed with items that have fasteners. Whirlpool recommends this step for leggings.
- Wash gently, if the label permits. Use cold water, a gentle or delicate cycle, and mild detergent. Avoid fabric softener, dryer sheets, and bleach. Under Armour gives similar advice for compression shirts in its washing guide.
- Dry with care. Air drying is a cautious default for elastic synthetics. If the care label allows tumble drying, choose low or no heat rather than assuming every activewear item must stay out of the dryer.
Why care instructions matter for stretch and wicking
Activewear is not one uniform fabric. Polyester, nylon, and spandex are among the materials used in lightweight, stretchy, moisture-wicking clothing, according to REI’s athleisure overview. Spandex or elastane can provide stretch and recovery, while a garment’s finish may contribute to wicking.

Moisture wicking moves sweat away from the skin toward the garment’s surface through capillary action. In its June 1, 2026 explanation of moisture wicking, Patagonia notes that polyester is normally hydrophobic and that spandex may be blended in for stretch, recovery, compression, or support. The different roles of fibers and finishes are one reason the care label should guide the wash.

Residue may also impair quick drying and odor control, and may reduce spandex longevity. Wicking treatments can degrade over time; careful washing cannot guarantee that a worn or damaged treatment will be restored. Patagonia’s product-care and repair guidance advises mild laundry soap and line drying, while its wicking article cautions against harsh detergents, waxes, softeners, dryer sheets, and stain removers.

How to wash leggings
Use the same label-first routine: turn leggings inside out, wash cold and gently with mild detergent if allowed, and skip softener and dryer sheets. A mesh bag can be useful for delicate leggings or when other items in the load have hooks, zippers, or buttons. Under Armour’s workout-legging guidance also advises cold water, washing like colors together, and avoiding softener and bleach; it recognizes that instructions vary by garment.
How to get sweat smell out of leggings
If odor persists, Whirlpool suggests soaking leggings in cold water with a small amount of mild detergent for 20–30 minutes, then rinsing thoroughly and gently squeezing out water rather than twisting. Treat this as an optional remedy, not a replacement for the garment’s care label. Avoid adding softener to mask odor, since residue can interfere with wicking.

Can you put leggings in the dryer?
Only if the care label permits it. Air drying is the cautious choice for elastic synthetics; where tumble drying is allowed, use low or no heat. Heat guidance is not identical across all products: Patagonia recommends low- or medium-heat settings to avoid synthetic-fiber damage, while its product-care guidance favors line drying. The garment’s own label determines which instruction applies.

Check its tag, turn it inside out, then use cold water, a gentle cycle, and mild detergent if those settings are allowed. Skip fabric softener, bleach, and dryer sheets. Under Armour’s compression-shirt instructions recommend these steps and caution that improper washing can reduce elasticity and fit. Dry according to the shirt’s label.
