Why steam can be risky for delicates
A steam setting is not automatically safe just because it is built into a washing machine. LG says not to use steam with delicates such as wool, silk, and easily discolored fabrics; its guidance also identifies leather as temperature-sensitive. The exact exclusions depend on the washer and cycle.

Steam operation differs by machine, too. LG describes some models as heating a small amount of water to generate steam before the main wash begins, while Whirlpool says its Steam Clean option adds soak or wash time and a steam boost to some cycles. Availability can vary by cycle, so a generic “Steam” label is not enough to establish that a particular garment is suitable. LG’s front-load washer steam guidance notes that its information may differ from a specific model; Whirlpool’s Steam Clean guidance likewise describes cycle-dependent availability.

- Read the garment’s care label. If it says “dry clean only,” do not put the garment through a washer steam cycle. If it permits machine washing, follow its temperature and cycle instructions. Whirlpool’s cycle guide directs users to follow garment-label instructions.
- Find the manual for your exact washer model. Check which cycles allow steam and whether the manufacturer names fabrics that must not be steamed. Brand-wide help pages and cycle names cannot replace model-specific instructions.
- When steam is prohibited or unclear, leave it off. For a machine-washable delicate, select a label-compatible Delicate, Gentle, or Hand Wash cycle and temperature. Whirlpool describes delicate washing as using lower agitation and a slower spin; its cycle guide also distinguishes washable wool and silk settings.
- Use a mesh bag where appropriate. A bag can contain small or vulnerable garments during a suitable gentle wash, but it does not protect fabric from steam or heat that the label or manual disallows. Whirlpool’s cycle guide recommends mesh bags for undergarments and small items.
- Follow the washer’s loading, detergent, and door instructions. Do not overload or improvise around a lock or cycle restriction.
Steam-cycle restrictions can be specific to a model
For example, an LG SteamFresh manual excludes items such as wool, silk, lingerie, leather jackets, wet clothes, blankets, foam products, and electric blankets from that cycle. It also warns that high heat can set stains, so stains should be removed before using that cycle. These are cautions for the cited SteamFresh documentation, not universal exclusions for every steam washer. Protect yourself around a steam cycle
The cited LG SteamFresh manual warns that the door can become very hot and says, “Do not touch the door during steam cycles.” It also cautions against overriding the lock or reaching into the washer while a steam cycle is running. These warnings apply to the machine covered by that manual; follow the safety instructions for your washer and wait for its lock to release before opening the door.

Start with the care label, then match it to a cycle in the washer manual. If the garment is labeled machine washable and the manual provides a suitable Silk, Wool, Delicate, Gentle, or Hand Wash cycle, use the option the label and manual both support, with steam off unless both explicitly permit steam for that item and cycle. If the label calls for dry cleaning, or the two instructions do not establish a safe machine cycle, do not guess: use a qualified cleaner or follow the garment maker’s care guidance.
