Put page.render() inside the callback passed to page.open(), and render only when its status is 'success'. That callback runs when PhantomJS reports the page’s load event as finished; it does not guarantee that every later app update or delayed request has completed.
Take a screenshot after the page load event
This baseline follows PhantomJS’s documented navigation pattern. Save it as shot.js, then run it with PhantomJS, substituting the target URL if needed:

What “finished loading” does—and does not—mean
page.open() calls its optional callback through page.onLoadFinished. This is the right point for a screenshot of the page after its ordinary load event. It is not a promise that all asynchronous work has settled: timers, client-side rendering, delayed API calls, or other app behavior may change the page afterward.

If the screenshot needs such late content, define readiness in terms of a specific condition on that page—for example, a known element or application state—and render only after that condition is met. The condition must match what the screenshot actually needs; a generic extra delay cannot establish that an application is ready.
Wait for a page-specific condition when necessary
PhantomJS’s page automation guide documents page state and events, including page.loading and page.loadingProgress, where 100 indicates loaded. These can help diagnose navigation, but they do not replace a page-specific readiness condition when content changes after the load event. See Page Automation with PhantomJS.

When you add a custom wait, give it a finite timeout and a failure path. Otherwise, if the expected element or state never appears, the script can wait indefinitely. Keep the navigation callback as the start of this logic; take the screenshot only after the condition is satisfied, and still exit on success or failure.

Configure resource timeouts before navigation
PhantomJS’s page.settings reference documents resourceTimeout in milliseconds. If a resource exceeds that limit, PhantomJS stops trying to load it and calls onResourceTimeout. Set the option before page.open(), because these settings apply during the initial open call. JavaScript and image loading are enabled by default. Details are in the WebPage settings reference.

A resource timeout is not a substitute for checking the navigation status or waiting for an application-specific signal: it governs individual resources, while the screenshot’s readiness depends on the page and content you need.
Troubleshoot missing or incomplete screenshots
- The script exits without an image: Check the logged status. The example renders only when it is
'success'; investigate the URL or navigation failure before treating the screenshot as valid. - The screenshot exists but lacks late content: The load event may have completed before the app’s delayed update. Wait for a meaningful page-specific condition instead of assuming the callback covers all asynchronous work.
- The process does not terminate: Ensure
phantom.exit()runs after both successful rendering and failure handling. PhantomJS does not terminate automatically unless the script calls it. - A resource stalls or takes too long: Configure
resourceTimeoutbefore opening the URL and useonResourceTimeoutfor diagnostics. The setting is measured in milliseconds. - You are unsure whether navigation is still progressing: Inspect
page.loadingorpage.loadingProgressfor diagnostics; do not treat progress reaching 100 as proof that later application work is complete.

Does the page.open() callback wait for every network request to finish?
No. It reports the page load event finishing; asynchronous app updates may still happen afterward.
