How to Voice Chat on TeamSpeak: Join a Server and Talk

Connect to a TeamSpeak server, join a channel that allows voice, and calibrate your microphone. Here’s how to get talking and troubleshoot common snags.

To voice chat on TeamSpeak, connect to a server, join a channel where speaking is allowed, and set up your microphone. Connecting to a server alone may not put you in a channel where you can talk: a welcome channel can be moderated, so you may need to enter a different one.

What you need before you can speak

TeamSpeak voice conversations take place in server channels. TeamSpeak Support’s How to voice chat guide puts the first step plainly: “In order to speak to other users, you need to join a server.” After connecting, you also need to be in a channel that permits voice communication.

  • A TeamSpeak client for your device. TeamSpeak’s getting-started guidance describes TeamSpeak 6 for desktop and TeamSpeak 3 for mobile; client availability can change, so check TeamSpeak’s official downloads page for the current options.
  • A server to join. You can browse communities through Community Discovery, or use a server address or invite supplied by a friend or community.
  • A microphone, either built into your device or connected separately. A headset with a microphone is one option, but the cited setup guidance does not require a particular kind of headset.

How to join a server and enter a voice channel

  1. Install the appropriate client. Use TeamSpeak’s official downloads page to choose a client available for your platform and follow its installation steps. Release numbers change; confirm the current version there rather than relying on an older version listing.
  2. Choose how to find the server. For a public community, open Community Discovery and browse available servers. For a private community or a specific group, use the address or invite they provided. TeamSpeak server details can take the form of a domain address, an IP address, or a server nickname.
  3. Connect. Use the client’s Quick connect option to enter the server details, or follow the invite’s instructions. If you expect to return, bookmark the server in the client so you do not have to re-enter its details each time.
  4. Open the channel list and join the right channel. Select the channel where the conversation is happening. If the default or welcome channel is moderated, you may be connected to the server but unable to speak there. TeamSpeak’s support guidance says you may need to double-click another channel. Some servers also let users create a custom channel.
  5. Check your microphone input. Once you are on a server, configure voice activation using the client’s voice controls. The documented setup flow is to select Voice Activation, open the microphone-gain control, speak a few sentences, and use Auto Settings to calibrate it.
  6. Test that you can be heard. Speak normally after calibration and check the client’s voice indicators or ask someone in the channel to confirm they can hear you. If the microphone does not register, check that the intended microphone is connected and selected in the client and that the device allows microphone access.

Why you can be connected but unable to talk

You are in a moderated channel

A server’s default channel may restrict speaking. Look through the channel list for the room intended for conversation and enter it. If you still cannot speak after joining, the channel may have its own access rules; ask a server moderator or consult the community’s instructions.

Your microphone is not calibrated or selected

Voice activation depends on the client detecting your speech. Follow the gain and Auto Settings procedure while speaking a few sentences, and confirm the selected input is the microphone you intend to use. The documented guidance gives a calibration process, not a universal gain or sensitivity number, so a single numeric setting cannot be assumed to work for every microphone or room.

The server or your connection is preventing access

Connection trouble can result from incorrect server details, network or firewall restrictions, or server-side conditions such as the server being offline or restricting access. Check the exact error message and verify the address or nickname with the person who invited you. TeamSpeak’s connection guidance recommends using the specific error message to narrow down the cause rather than relying on one fix for every failure.

When server networking details matter

If you are joining someone else’s server, you generally need the address or invite and any access information the community requires. Port forwarding is mainly relevant when someone is hosting a server themselves; it is not a routine setting every voice-chat participant needs to change.

For a self-hosted TeamSpeak 3 server, TeamSpeak’s server-networking documentation lists UDP port 9987 as the default required voice port and describes forwarding it on the router. This is a TeamSpeak 3 default, not a universal port for every TeamSpeak version or setup: server ports can be configured. The same TeamSpeak 3 self-hosting guidance describes one virtual server and 32 slots under the no-license-cost arrangement it covers. Confirm the current terms and configuration in TeamSpeak’s official documentation before setting up a server.

Choosing between discovery and a direct invite

Use Community Discovery when you want to browse available communities. Use a direct address or invite when you already know which server you need to join, especially for a private group. Both routes lead to the same next step: enter the appropriate channel before trying to talk.
