To visualise an atom’s valence electrons, draw a Lewis electron dot symbol: write the element’s chemical symbol and place one dot around it for each valence electron. The dots make the count—and, by convention, which electrons are unpaired or paired—easy to see.
How do you draw valence electrons around an element symbol?
- Find the valence-electron count. For main-group elements, groups 1 and 2 have one and two valence electrons; groups 13–18 have three through eight. Helium has two. See Chemistry LibreTexts’ explanation of valence electrons and Lewis dot symbols and its introductory chemistry dot-symbol guide.
- Write the element symbol. For example, use S for sulfur.
- Place dots one at a time around the symbol. Put one dot on each of the four sides before adding a second dot to any side. After the first four, add dots as pairs; no side has more than two. The side where you start does not matter in this convention. The Los Angeles Trade-Technical College chapter on Lewis electron dot diagrams describes this convention.
Sulfur is in group 16, so its symbol gets six dots: four placed singly, then two paired on sides. The drawing is a compact way to track the atom’s represented valence electrons in introductory bonding, not a literal picture of electrons moving on fixed paths.

What information does the dot symbol show?
The number of dots represents the valence-electron count. Their placement also shows single versus paired dots under the conventional drawing method. That makes the symbol useful for keeping track of valence electrons in introductory explanations of bonding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt is less detailed than an electron configuration or orbital diagram. Those representations can show subshell or orbital occupancy more explicitly, which matters when the question is about where electrons occupy rather than simply how many valence electrons are represented. Choose the representation that matches the question: dot symbols for a compact count and pairing view, configurations or orbital diagrams for finer occupancy detail.

- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

Where does the main-group shortcut stop working?
The group-number shortcut is useful for the main-group pattern, but it is not reliable for transition elements. Introductory Lewis dot diagrams also commonly leave out partially filled d and f subshell electrons. As a result, the simple dot symbol should not be treated as a complete electron-occupancy account for every element or as a universal eight-dot rule.
How should ions be represented?
An ion has lost or gained electrons, so its diagram must account for that change. Conventions can differ in which shell the dots are meant to represent; one teaching convention keeps the atom’s original valence shell as the reference. In that convention, sodium ion has lost the single electron from sodium’s original outer shell. State the convention when drawing an ion so the dots are not mistaken for a full electron configuration.
