To preview what someone wearing Steam Frame sees on an Android phone, use Steam Link as a spectator client connected to a computer running Steam. This is Steam’s documented spectator-view route—not a direct headset-to-phone cast, a way to mirror the phone’s own screen, or a method for controlling the headset.
What the phone can show—and what it cannot
Steam says Steam Frame spectator view can be opened on a PC through Steam > Settings > Remote Play, or on a device that supports Steam Link. Steam’s Android Steam Link support also says the app can spectate VR games. Together, those instructions support previewing the headset wearer’s view on a compatible Android phone through the Steam host PC.

Steam Link connects the phone to a computer running Steam; the documented route is not a direct wireless cast from Steam Frame to Android. Steam describes Frame as streaming-first while also supporting standalone play, so do not assume every standalone activity will appear on the host PC or phone. - Prepare the host PC. Turn on the computer, launch Steam, and sign in. Steam Link requires a host computer running Steam.
- Install Steam Link on the phone. Get the official app from Google Play, or use Steam’s official alternative download route if Google Play is unavailable. Steam lists Android 5.0 and newer as supported; confirm current compatibility in Steam’s Android Steam Link instructions.
- Connect the phone and PC to the same network. Steam’s Android setup guidance calls for the phone and host PC to use the same network.
- Pair the phone with the host in Steam Link. Open the app and follow its on-screen pairing and connection instructions. Then use the spectator-preview option if it is offered in the current app flow. Steam documents the PC alternative at Steam > Settings > Remote Play; its public instructions do not specify an Android-specific menu label for selecting Steam Frame spectator view.
- Start the headset session and check the preview. The intended result is a spectator view of what the headset user sees, not a mirror of the Android phone’s screen.
Choose a viewing route

The phone route is more portable; watching on the PC uses the host’s display instead. Steam’s documented guidance does not establish HDMI adapters, generic casting apps, or cloud streaming as equivalent ways to view Steam Frame.

Keep the connection safe and reliable
- Use a trusted network. Steam says Remote Play is generally unsupported on public, workplace, school or university, guest, captive-portal, and client-isolated networks. A trusted home network is the appropriate starting point.
- Prefer a wired host and 5 GHz phone Wi-Fi where practical. Steam recommends Ethernet for the host PC and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for wireless devices in its suggested network settings. Its Android guide also recommends a 5 GHz router.
- Do not broadly disable network protections. Do not turn off a firewall or router isolation features indiscriminately to force pairing. Use Steam’s troubleshooting guidance if a trusted-network connection does not work.
Steam’s SteamOS 0.4.1 beta notes dated September 25, 2026, state: “Spectator view is now smoothed by default.” That is a beta-specific software behavior note, not a promise of a particular latency or image quality; beta behavior can change. Steam Frame community page and beta notes

No controller is required just to view the spectator stream. If you also want to control a streamed game from Android, Steam Support lists Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile as controller options.
