Treat agency rankings and published prices as starting points—not proof of quality or guaranteed SEO results—and compare the actual work, contract terms, and live examples before signing.
What does a link building agency actually do?
The label covers several distinct services. An agency may pitch editors and journalists, arrange guest contributions, seek niche edits in existing articles, promote research or other linkable content, or combine link building with broader SEO. Those approaches involve different inputs, degrees of editorial control, and timelines. Ask what the provider will do and what you must supply; a promised number of links alone does not describe the campaign.

- Editorial outreach: contacting relevant publishers to earn placements in editorial content.
- Digital PR: pitching stories, data, or expert commentary to journalists and publications.
- Guest contributions or niche edits: securing links through contributed articles or additions to existing pages. Clarify the publisher’s editorial standards and how the placement is obtained.
- Content-led link earning: creating or promoting assets intended to attract citations, such as research or useful resources.
Ask the agency to distinguish these methods in its proposal and identify which deliverables, content, and approvals are included. A category label such as “SaaS specialist” is not evidence of fit by itself.
How should a startup compare agencies?
Use a sales call to test the specifics behind the pitch. Request current examples and written terms rather than relying on domain scores, package names, or headline link counts.

- Check relevance: Request recent live placement URLs on sites and pages relevant to your software category and buyers. Review the page context and whether it appears to reach a real audience; a third-party domain metric cannot establish topical fit.
- Understand the method: Ask how prospects are found, how outreach is conducted, and whether the work is editorial pitching, digital PR, guest contributions, niche edits, content promotion, or a combination.
- Clarify quality controls: Ask about publisher criteria, any traffic or quality floors, whether you can approve targets before placement, and whether links are expected to remain live. Get the remedy for a removed link in writing.
- Connect placements to your goals: Ask how the agency chooses landing pages and anchor text, and how it will target the pages your company wants to grow. Monthly placement volume is an activity measure, not a business outcome.
- Compare the full commercial terms: Check the minimum engagement, cancellation terms, included content and reporting, payment structure, and any replacement policy—not just the per-link or monthly figure.
- Separate evidence from promotion: Ask which results are agency-reported and what can be independently checked. Treat rankings and case studies published by providers or commercially influenced comparison sites accordingly.
Which agencies appear on current startup and SaaS shortlists?
The following providers appear in 2026 comparison articles. This is an illustrative shortlist, not an independently tested ranking; the sources differ in selection and methodology, and some are self-published or commercially influenced. Use the descriptions to decide whom to investigate, then verify examples, scope, and current terms directly.
| Provider | Potential fit described by the sources | Published example and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Outreach Monks | A SaaS campaign buyer looking at a published rate card and stated quality floor. | A comparison updated September 2026 lists a DR 60+ floor by tier, a starting rate of $99 per link, and monthly packages of $1,699–$6,999. These are comparison-page figures, not a current quote. Source |
| Editorial.Link | A buyer considering editorial placements or a smaller trial. | Comparisons report per-link pricing and a single-link option. OutreachZ lists examples of $375 for one link, $1,750 for five, and $6,000 for twenty; confirm current rates and package terms. Source Source Source |
| Jeenam | A buyer seeking managed, SaaS-focused outreach. | Its own 2026 comparison describes full campaign management and placement criteria, and lists $1,250 per month for five links. The figure and service description are self-published by the agency, which places itself first. Source |
| uSERP | A funded or enterprise software company considering premium editorial work and digital PR. | Comparison sources list a $5,500-per-month Launch starting point and a three-month initial engagement. Verify the current plan, scope, and term directly. Source Source Source |
| LinkBuilder.io | A buyer looking for a structured, managed monthly program. | Startup and SaaS comparisons describe recurring monthly campaigns, but published package prices differ by source. Confirm the current offer and inclusions. Source Source Source |
| GoPeak | A buyer wanting to test a provider before making a larger commitment. | One September 2026 comparison reports a $990 five-link pilot and monthly packages from $1,900; another 2026 source describes contextual link building. Confirm the deliverables and approval terms. Source Source |
Other names also appear in the comparisons, including Page One Power, Siege Media, FATJOE, SAASY LINKS, and Get Pro Links. Match the shortlist to the service you need—individual placements, ongoing outreach, digital PR, or content-led link earning—rather than assuming every provider offers the same model. How much does link building cost?
Published figures vary by provider, package, and comparison source. They are useful for building a rough shortlist, but they are not binding offers or a universal market rate. Ask for a current proposal that states the work, volume, minimum term, content, reporting, and cancellation conditions.
- Published rates are not universal: SaaS Link Building Agencies says 18 of 29 agencies in its comparison publish a rate and 13 of 29 state a Domain Rating floor; its page says it was updated September 1, 2026. This is a descriptive count from that comparison, not a market-wide study. Source
- Broad comparison benchmarks: Ivristech frames 2026 pricing as $45–$700 per link, $3,000–$7,500 per month for mid-market retainers, and $7,500–$15,000 or more per month for premium digital PR. These are that publisher’s benchmarks, not a standardized rate card. Source
- Individual provider examples: The figures in the shortlist above come from comparison pages or, for Jeenam, the agency’s own comparison. Dates, package scope, and terms differ, so confirm each directly before budgeting. Source Source Source Source
How can founders vet rankings and case studies?
Comparison pages can help identify candidates, but their rankings are not an independent audit of placement quality or results. One comparison explicitly says paid placement may affect ranking position and that position is not a quality measure; another includes its own agency. Check each publisher’s methodology and commercial disclosures, and distinguish an agency’s reported client outcome from independently verified evidence. Source Source

Likewise, a quality floor or case study should prompt questions rather than settle them. Inspect live examples yourself, including the page’s relevance, editorial context, and apparent audience. The available comparisons do not establish independently audited evidence that a given agency’s placements caused ranking, traffic, AI visibility, or revenue gains.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should a startup hire an agency?
Hiring makes sense when the company has a clear audience and target pages, can evaluate relevant placements, and needs a repeatable outreach process it cannot manage internally. The service model should fit the available budget and internal capacity: a single-placement option may suit a limited trial, while managed outreach or digital PR involves a broader campaign commitment. Before starting, agree on what success reporting will cover and avoid treating placement counts as a substitute for business outcomes.
If the proposal cannot show relevant live examples, explain how placements are earned, or spell out approvals and remedies, keep looking. A lower headline rate does not answer those questions.
