Before installing an AI-agent skill, establish where it came from, inspect every file in the package, and understand what tools, data, and access it may use. Then install it using the target platform’s own instructions and record the source and version. A listing or automated scan alone cannot establish that a skill is safe.
What an agent skill can do
A skill is more than a short description: it can bundle workflow instructions, reference documents, other resources, and executable scripts. Codex documentation describes a skill as such a package; Codex uses its name and description to find a skill, then reads its full SKILL.md when selected. That file is operational guidance for the agent, not just passive documentation. See the Codex skill overview.

Some agent tools share skill formats, but that does not make their installation commands, discovery locations, or permission models interchangeable. Check the current official documentation for the platform you are using before installing. For example, the Visual Studio Code documentation advises: “Always review shared skills before using them to ensure they meet your requirements and security standards.”

1. Establish provenance
Identify the publisher and repository, and inspect the project’s history. Pin down the specific release or commit you plan to use rather than relying on a moving branch or an unexplained download. For team use, agree on an approved source and a process for reviewing updates; a familiar repository name alone does not prove that a particular version is trustworthy.

2. Read the complete package
Review the full SKILL.md, every document it references, all bundled scripts, and any other resources relevant to its operation. Do not stop at frontmatter or a short catalogue description: they may not disclose what the body instructions or supporting files ask the agent to do. Codex’s description of how it reads a selected skill illustrates why the complete package matters; Anthropic’s enterprise guidance likewise flags scripts and other package contents for review (Anthropic enterprise skill guidance).
3. Map the behavior it requests
Make a practical inventory of commands, tools, external servers, URLs, API calls, filesystem paths, and any handling of credentials or private data. For each item, ask whether it is needed for the skill’s stated purpose, what information it can reach, and what effect it can have. A request that is broader than the task warrants deserves closer scrutiny.
4. Investigate suspicious instructions
Look carefully for directions to ignore safeguards, conceal actions, behave differently under undisclosed conditions, or send information somewhere unexpected. These are reasons to investigate, not automatic proof that a skill is malicious: judge them in context against the publisher, the rest of the package, and the task the skill claims to perform.
5. Install with source and version traceability
Use the target platform’s documented installation method. Record the repository or publisher and the exact version or commit you reviewed. After installation, inspect the installed files and choose a scope that fits the task. Do not assume a command or directory used by one agent applies to another.
6. Evaluate before wider use
When practical, try the skill in a controlled project using non-sensitive data. Observe whether it follows the expected workflow and whether its actions match the behavior you identified during review. Revisit the package when the skill or its dependencies change. This is a prudent review practice, not a platform-independent test protocol or a safety certification.
What to examine in scripts, tools, and access
Anthropic’s enterprise guidance identifies several useful review areas. None is a verdict by itself; each points to a capability or behavior whose relevance depends on the skill’s purpose.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
- Executable scripts: They can perform actions, so inspect what they run, what inputs they accept, and whether their effects match the stated workflow.
- Tool invocations and MCP references: Identify which tools or external servers the skill asks the agent to use, and whether that access is necessary for the task.
- Network access: Check destinations and transmitted information. Network behavior can expose or send data outside the local environment.
- Credentials: Look for hardcoded secrets or instructions that could expose tokens, keys, or other credentials. A skill should not receive sensitive access without a clear need and appropriate safeguards.
- Filesystem paths: Note whether the skill reaches beyond its own directory or the project it is meant to work on. Broader access can expose or alter unintended files.
- Instructions that manipulate behavior: Directions to suppress safeguards or hide actions may change how the agent handles the user’s request; inspect their context and implications.
These checks help describe what a package could cause an agent to do. They do not prove intent, and a clean-looking listing cannot substitute for reading the files that will actually be installed.
Are skills safe in general?
There is no blanket answer: risk depends on the specific package, its source, its contents, the agent’s available tools, and the scope in which it runs. A 2026 preprint, Agent Skills for Large Language Models: Architecture, Acquisition, Security, and the Path Forward, reports vulnerabilities in 26.1% of the community-contributed skills in its examined dataset (preprint abstract). Treat that as a study-specific result, not a prevalence estimate for all skills, registries, or current installations; the abstract alone does not provide enough methodological detail to assess how broadly the figure applies.
What automated scanning can—and cannot—tell you
Organizational scanning can add another signal when reviewing third-party skills and plugins. Anthropic explicitly cautions that scanning is not a guarantee and may miss behavior that is unintended without being malicious (Anthropic enterprise skill guidance). Use a scan alongside provenance checks and manual inspection, not as a replacement for them or as proof that a package is safe.
Comparing two skills for the same job
When several packages claim to solve the same task, compare them on the same dimensions rather than relying on popularity or a short description:
- Source and history: Who publishes each skill, and can you identify the exact version and its history?
- Instruction scope: Are the directions clear and limited to the stated task?
- Bundled code: What scripts and resources are included, and what do they do?
- Tools and permissions: What access does each package request, and is it proportionate?
- Network and data behavior: What destinations or sensitive information are involved?
- Traceability and review: Can you pin the version, inspect updates, and use available review or scanning controls?
The relevant platform’s current documentation should settle installation and discovery details. The factors above support a package-by-package review; they do not establish that one agent platform or skill format is inherently safer than another.
