The troy-ounce and tola relationship can also be expressed in grains: a troy ounce is 480 grains and the Indian standard tola is 180 grains, making one tola exactly three-eighths of a troy ounce under those standards. The tola’s 11.6638-gram figure is a calculated conversion; the historical Indian reference rounds it to 11.66 grams.

For quick estimates, 31.1035 grams per troy ounce is usually convenient. Use the longer conversion factor for calculations and round the final amount to the appropriate currency precision. The ordinary ounce is lighter, so confusing the two produces a materially different price comparison.
How to convert a gold quote to another unit
Keep the currency unchanged and apply the mass ratio to the quoted unit price. The general rule is:

For example, if a hypothetical quote is 2,400 units of a currency per troy ounce, its mass-equivalent quote per gram is 2,400 ÷ 31.1034768, and its quote per tola is 2,400 × 3/8. The result is a unit conversion, not a live market price or a prediction of what a buyer will pay.

NIST’s conversion chart illustrates the same method with an example of $1,181.93 per troy ounce: dividing by 31.1034768 gives $38 per gram. That figure is the chart’s illustration, not a current gold price. NIST’s precious-metals guidance and conversion chart explain the comparison approach.
Why unit conversion does not tell you an item’s gold value
The equations convert the price for an equivalent mass, assuming the same purity and pricing basis. They do not determine how much fine gold a piece contains, verify a karat mark, or establish a dealer’s offer. NIST cautions that buyer and seller offers commonly include reductions for karat content and deductions for other factors.

Gross jewelry weight is not the same as fine-gold weight. A piece’s purity or fineness affects the amount of gold in that total weight, while premiums, assay charges, and other deductions affect the transaction price. Keep these factors distinct from the arithmetic that converts grams, tolas, and troy ounces.
Bar specifications illustrate why fineness matters: the London Bullion Market Association’s conversion table gives 10 tolas as 3.731 fine troy ounces at fineness 995.0, 3.746 at 999.0, and 3.75 at 999.9. A checklist for comparing two gold quotes
- Confirm the weight unit. Establish whether the quote is per gram, tola, or troy ounce. If it says “ounce,” confirm that it means a troy ounce rather than an ordinary ounce.
- Match currency and quote time. Convert quotes into the same currency and compare them on the same time basis; gold-market prices fluctuate.
- Match purity or fineness. Compare like with like, and distinguish gross item weight from the fine-gold content.
- List premiums and deductions separately. Account for dealer margins, assay charges, and other fees rather than hiding them inside the unit conversion.
If you need an item’s weight before calculating, a scale that displays grams can provide that measurement. A scale measures weight; it does not test purity or establish a fair price.

What standards say about precious-metal price units
NIST Handbook 130, Uniform Regulation for the Method of Sale of Commodities, Section 2.17, says that when precious-metal prices are based wholly or partly on weight, the unit of measure and method of sale should be troy weight or SI units. It also calls for a prominently displayed conversion chart when the sale uses SI mass units, to facilitate price comparison. NIST reproduces this guidance on its precious-metals page.
