To check whether an X account is really Microsoft’s, find its exact handle through a Microsoft website you reached independently—not through the suspicious post. Then verify important claims on Microsoft-controlled sources. A blue checkmark alone does not prove Microsoft owns an account, and a badge does not authenticate every post.
Verify the account from a Microsoft-controlled source
- Record the exact @handle. A display name, logo, profile photo, or badge can be copied. Check the full handle, including spelling and punctuation.
- Go to Microsoft independently. Type a Microsoft website address yourself or use a bookmark you already trust. Microsoft’s safety guidance recommends using the official site directly rather than following a link in a message: Microsoft Support’s advice on tech-support scams.
- Follow Microsoft’s own links. From a Microsoft-controlled page, follow links to its social accounts and compare the resulting X handle character for character with the one you are checking. Do not rely on a handle remembered from a search result or an old post.
This method verifies whether Microsoft’s own web properties point to that exact account. It is more useful than trying to infer ownership from the account’s appearance.

Check the post separately from the profile
An account that appears legitimate does not by itself establish that a particular post is accurate or authorized. For a security warning, product announcement, giveaway, or support instruction, look for the same information on a Microsoft-controlled website or on an X account reached through Microsoft’s site. Do not use a link in the questionable post as your route to confirmation.

If the post asks you to sign in, share personal information, pay, or act urgently, treat it as suspicious until you have independently confirmed the request. Microsoft says it “will never proactively reach out to you to provide unsolicited technical support.” Microsoft also advises against clicking links or providing personal information in a message claiming to be from Microsoft. Instead, enter Microsoft’s address yourself and find support or account information there: Microsoft’s guidance on protecting yourself from tech-support scams.

What X’s checkmarks do—and do not—show

These meanings are X’s descriptions and may change. X says it began winding down its former Verification program on April 1, 2023; its current Premium checkmark eligibility is distinct from the former “active, notable, and authentic” criteria. If you cannot find the exact X handle by starting from a Microsoft-controlled website, the available evidence does not establish that Microsoft controls it. That is not proof the account is fake; it means you should not treat the account’s name, badge, or post as confirmation. For a consequential request, use Microsoft’s website or support channels reached independently instead.
