To secure a company X account, protect its recovery email, use a unique password and an available second factor, limit third-party access, and teach staff to reject suspicious login links and password requests. If unauthorized activity appears, change the password, secure the email account, revoke unfamiliar connections, and investigate the devices and networks used to sign in.
Build a secure login and recovery setup
Use unique passwords for X and its recovery email
X recommends a strong password that is not used on other services. The email address attached to the account is part of its security: give that mailbox its own strong, unique password and protect it with its own safeguards. A password manager can generate and store distinct passwords; X names 1Password and LastPass as examples, not as endorsements.

Turn on a second factor
X documents text message, an authentication app, and a security key as two-factor authentication methods. The available choice depends on what the company account’s settings show. X stopped supporting SMS two-factor authentication for non-Premium subscribers on March 20, 2023; for Premium subscribers, SMS availability can vary by country and carrier. X does not publish a comparative security ranking of these methods.

For a team, choose a method staff can use consistently and plan how access will be recovered if the enrolled device or key is lost. If selecting a physical security key, confirm its compatibility with the account and devices before purchase; X documents security keys as an option but does not guarantee compatibility for every model.

Consider a passkey
X says passkeys are available on iOS and Android. They use WebAuthn public-key cryptography: X stores the public key, while the private key stays on the device. To enroll, use Settings and privacy → Security and account access → Security → Passkey, then sign in and confirm the account password when prompted.
Require recovery details where available
In the account’s security settings, enable the option to require an email address and phone number for password-reset requests if it is offered. Keep the associated contact details current and make sure only authorized staff can access the recovery mailbox.

Reduce phishing and access risks across the team
Check the address before signing in
Before entering credentials, verify that the site’s base domain is x.com. If a message sends staff to a login page and anything looks unusual, do not use its link; navigate directly to x.com instead. X says: “X will never ask you to provide your password via email, Direct Message, or reply.” Treat any such request as suspicious.

Review connected apps and team membership
Remove third-party apps the company no longer uses or does not recognize. If the account uses X Pro teams, check the members list and remove unknown users. Limit account access to people who need it, and review these lists when staff responsibilities change.

Respond in order if the account may be compromised
Unexpected posts or Direct Messages, unfamiliar account actions, notices of account changes, or a password that stops working can indicate a compromise. Use this sequence:
- Change the X password. Choose a new password that has never been used before.
- Secure the associated email account. Change its password if needed and review who can access that mailbox.
- Revoke unfamiliar third-party connections. Review the connected apps in account settings; a legitimate connected app may ask you to enter the new password afterward.
- Review recent account activity and changes. Look for posts, messages, or settings changes the team did not make, and address any remaining unauthorized access.
- Check X Pro team membership, if used. Remove members the company does not recognize.
- If you cannot sign in after a password reset, contact X support. Use the email address associated with the account and include its username and the last date you could access it.
Changing the password does not automatically log the account out of X for iOS or Android. Do not treat a password change alone as proof that every app session has ended; review and revoke suspicious app access as well.

Investigate activity that continues after recovery
If unauthorized behavior persists, consider how credentials may have been exposed. X identifies malicious third-party apps or sites, weak or reused passwords, password-stealing malware, and compromised networks as possible causes. Scan computers used to access the account for viruses and malware, install operating-system and application security updates, and review any app or network that may have handled company credentials.
