A familiar name, polished page, logo, or caller ID does not prove who is behind a message or whether its claims are true. The safest check is to inspect the exact source, then verify it through a contact route you find independently.
Start by pausing before you act
Unexpected urgency, threats, prizes, and requests for passwords, payment, or sensitive information are reasons to verify—not reasons to hurry. If a suspicious message includes a link or attachment, do not click or open it while checking. CISA advises contacting the organization directly when a message that appears to come from it still seems suspicious.

A convincing logo, display name, professional design, or caller ID can be copied or faked. Treat these as clues, not proof of identity.

Check the exact website address and account identity
Read the complete web address, including the domain, rather than judging a page by its branding. Look for misspellings, extra words, or a domain that does not match the organization’s known address. A familiar social-media handle or profile name is not, by itself, proof that the account is official.

HTTPS means the connection is encrypted; it does not certify that the site operator is honest or that the page’s claims are accurate. Likewise, a padlock icon is not an authenticity check. CISA explains the specific meaning of the U.S. .gov domain: only verified federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial government entities can register for it. That rule does not apply to unrelated domains, and a government domain alone does not prove every statement on a page is correct. See CISA’s guidance on migrating to the .gov domain and its phishing infographic.
Verify the account or request through an independent route
Do not use the link, phone number, or reply address in the questionable message to check whether it is genuine. Instead, choose a route you already trust or locate independently: type a known web address, use a saved bookmark, or find contact details in a reliable directory or official source. Ask the organization whether the account, message, request, or article is theirs.

Caller ID can be spoofed, so an incoming call that appears to come from a familiar organization is not independent confirmation. If the caller asks for money or sensitive information, end the call and contact the organization using a number you found separately. The FTC explains how to recognize and avoid phishing scams.

An article can come from a real publication and still contain errors. Check its provenance and evaluate the claim itself:

- Author: Is a writer identified? Can you find relevant background or other work?
- Date: When was it published or updated? A once-accurate article may be out of date.
- Evidence: Does it explain how it knows what it claims, with specific documents, data, or named sources?
- Linked material: Open the cited primary sources when safe. Do they actually support the claim, and are they being represented accurately?
- Independent confirmation: For consequential claims, compare coverage with authoritative sources that do not simply repeat the same original post.
CISA’s “Question the Source” guide recommends checking whether an author is identified and assessing the evidence. If you cannot establish where a claim came from or its evidence does not support it, do not treat it as verified; ask a knowledgeable person or consult an authoritative source.
What to do if you still cannot verify it
Do not act on an unverified request or pass an unverified claim along as fact. Avoid sending money or personal information unless you have confirmed the request through an independent channel. Report suspected phishing or impersonation through the relevant organization or platform’s official reporting route.

Protect sign-ins separately from verifying identity
Multi-factor authentication can reduce the risk of account takeover, but it does not establish that a public profile, organization, or article is authentic. CISA recommends phishing-resistant authentication where available. FIDO/WebAuthn security keys are designed to resist fake-site sign-in attempts, but compatibility and recovery options vary by service and device. Check those details and set up a backup method before relying on a key. See CISA’s overview, “More than a Password”.
