How to Verify Whether a Promised Raise Increased Your Take-Home Pay

Check the new rate and effective date against gross wages first. Then compare taxes, benefits, and other deductions to understand the change in net pay.

To verify a raise, check the new rate and effective date against the gross wages on your paystub first. Then compare taxes and deductions to see why the change in take-home pay may be smaller than the change in gross pay. A paycheck’s net amount alone cannot tell you whether payroll applied the raise correctly.

Start with the promised rate and effective date

Find the written compensation notice, offer letter, or employer message that states your new salary or hourly rate. Note the date it takes effect. The first paycheck after that date may cover a pay period that includes both old-rate and new-rate work, so it may show only a partial increase.

Check the pay-period dates printed on the stub against the effective date. If the period crosses that date, ask payroll how it divided the wages between the two rates rather than expecting the full-period amount immediately.

Compare the paystubs on an equal basis

Put a pre-raise stub next to a post-raise stub. Match the same pay frequency and, for hourly work, account for the same paid hours and overtime. If the periods differ, explicitly allow for the difference before comparing amounts.

Paycheck Budget Planner - Undated Financial Organizer for Weekly, Bi-Weekly, and Monthly Budgeting and Expense Tracking | A5 Rainbow
  • Flexible Budgeting Options: Suitable for weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly budgeting to match your pay schedule.
  • Undated & Reusable: Start budgeting anytime and reuse the planner year after year.
  • Premium Quality Paper: Made with 120gsm thick paper to prevent ink bleed-through and provide a smooth writing experience.
  • Comprehensive Financial Tracking: Includes sections for income, savings, bills, expenses, debt repayment, and financial summaries.
  • Additional Planning Tools: Features over 25 expense trackers, an annual budget planner, and areas for setting goals and reflecting on progress.
  • Gross wages: Compare regular wages and any separate overtime, bonus, or other wage lines.
  • Tax withholding: Compare federal, state, and local income-tax lines, plus Social Security and Medicare.
  • Deductions: Check health premiums, retirement contributions, and any other deductions. An election or premium change can affect net pay independently of the raise.
  • Year-to-date totals: Use them as a cross-check, not a substitute for comparing the individual pay periods.

For an annual salary, verify the gross amount per pay period using your employer’s pay schedule and the effective date. For hourly pay, calculate the applicable rate times paid hours, then account separately for overtime, unpaid time, and other wage items. The exact calculation depends on the dates and payroll conventions for your pay period.

Understand why net pay may rise by less than gross pay

Gross pay is wages before taxes and deductions; take-home pay is what remains after those amounts are withheld. Federal income-tax withholding depends partly on earnings and the information on Form W-4. A change in withholding affects the current check, but it is a prepayment toward your tax bill—not a direct measure of your final tax liability.

U.S. federal payroll taxes also affect the difference. For 2026, the IRS lists the employee Social Security tax rate as 6.2%, applied up to the annual wage base of $184,500, and the employee Medicare tax rate as 1.45% with no wage-base limit. Employers generally begin withholding the additional 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax after paying an employee more than $200,000 in the calendar year. That employer withholding trigger is distinct from the individual tax-liability threshold, which depends on filing status. See the IRS overview of Social Security and Medicare taxes and Additional Medicare Tax guidance.

State and local income-tax withholding, paid-leave deductions, benefits, retirement contributions, and other employer deductions can also affect take-home pay. Federal rates alone do not explain an entire paycheck.

Use the IRS estimator for a federal withholding question

The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help assess federal income-tax withholding and prepare a W-4. The IRS describes it as a free tool for estimating federal income tax to withhold from paychecks. Its frequently asked questions explain that Forms W-4 and W-4P do not address ordinary Social Security or Medicare withholding, which use fixed percentages; the estimator does account for Additional Medicare Tax.

The estimator answers a withholding question, not a payroll-rate question. It cannot establish whether your employer entered or applied the promised salary or hourly rate. If you consider changing withholding, weigh current take-home pay against your expected annual tax and refund or balance due; less withholding now can mean more tax due later. The IRS announced estimator changes on March 12, 2026, for listed provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, so check the current IRS pages when using it.

Ask payroll to review a mismatch

If gross wages do not reconcile with the written rate, effective date, pay-period dates, and hours or salary calculation, contact payroll with the specific discrepancy. Ask for the rate on file, the date it was implemented, the calculation used for the affected pay period, and whether a correction is needed.

Keep copies of the compensation notice and relevant paystubs. Wage-dispute rights and deadlines depend on your jurisdiction and circumstances; federal tax guidance does not resolve those questions.
