USO is not a long-term ownership claim on crude oil. The United States Oil Fund, LP holds futures-based exposure, so its results can diverge from spot oil over time—especially when the futures curve is in contango. Before holding it, understand what it tracks, how contract rolls affect returns, and what the fund’s current documents say about its portfolio and costs.
What USO tracks—and what it does not
USO is an exchange-traded security, not a fund that gives shareholders ownership of barrels of oil. Its stated objective is for daily percentage changes in its net asset value (NAV) to reflect daily changes in the spot price of light sweet crude oil delivered to Cushing, Oklahoma, as measured by a specified short-term futures benchmark, plus collateral interest and less expenses. See USCF’s USO disclosure.

That objective is not a promise that USO will match spot crude—or the benchmark futures contract—over a long holding period. USCF describes the objective using an average daily percentage-change measure over 30 successive valuation days, with a tolerance of plus or minus 10% relative to the benchmark. This is a stated measurement method, not a guarantee of an exact match over any period an investor chooses. USCF explicitly warns: “AN INVESTMENT IN USO SHOULD NOT BE VIEWED AS AN INVESTMENT IN THE BENCHMARK OIL FUTURES CONTRACT OR LIGHT SWEET CRUDE OIL.” See the official USO product page.
How futures rolls can affect long-term returns
Futures contracts expire. To maintain oil exposure, a fund must move exposure from contracts nearing expiration into other contracts. The prices of those contracts relative to one another can affect returns, even when the overall price of oil is unchanged.

Contango can create a headwind
USCF describes contango as a market in which the near-month futures contract is priced below a later contract. In that situation, as the near-month contract approaches expiration, the benchmark contract tends to decline absent an offsetting move in crude prices. The transition to a higher-priced contract can therefore weigh on returns over time. The effect is not a fixed loss for every roll or period: oil-price moves and other factors also influence results.
USCF warns that, absent the impact of rising or falling oil prices, prolonged contango could significantly harm USO’s per-share NAV and total return, and investors could lose part or all of their investment. Read the issuer’s discussion of contango and other risks.

Backwardation can be supportive, but is not a guarantee
Backwardation is the reverse curve relationship: the near-month contract is priced above the next contract. USCF says that, absent the overall movement in oil prices, the benchmark tends to rise as the near-month contract approaches expiration. That relationship can support returns, but it does not ensure a gain for USO or offset other effects.

Why USO can fall while crude oil rises
Spot oil and USO are not the same exposure. USO’s results reflect its futures-based benchmark, the way contracts are rolled, collateral interest, expenses, and tracking differences. Those influences can offset some or all of a rise in crude over a particular holding period. The curve is only one influence; contango does not mechanically determine the result of every period.

Likewise, an oil-price decline does not by itself establish how much USO will fall. The fund’s objective is framed around daily percentage changes and a specified futures benchmark, not a direct long-term replication of spot crude. Compare returns over the same dates and understand which oil price or futures series is being used before drawing conclusions.
Check the fund’s current roll method and holdings
Do not assume USO always holds only one fixed futures contract or follows an unchanged roll calendar. USCF says the fund may hold contracts beyond the benchmark or other oil-related investments in circumstances including regulatory requirements, risk mitigation, liquidity needs, or market conditions.

USCF’s document library describes a roll method effective January 1, 2026: over a five-day period, the fund seeks to rebalance about 20% each day of the announced percentage of the notional value of nearest-month instruments and specified other instruments. The disclosure says projected roll dates may change without notice. Treat that as a dated description, not a permanent rule. For a decision tied to a particular date, check the latest USCF document library for the prospectus, roll calendar, and holdings.
What to review before deciding to keep holding USO
- Your intended holding period: USO’s objective does not promise that its long-term return will equal spot oil’s return. Decide whether the fund’s futures-based exposure fits the period you have in mind.
- The current futures curve: Review whether near-month contracts are below or above later contracts. The curve can add a potential drag or tailwind, but it is not a stand-alone forecast of USO’s return.
- Current holdings and roll schedule: Use the latest official holdings and calendar rather than relying on an old description of the fund’s positions or roll dates.
- Costs and collateral interest: Both are part of the stated objective: expenses are deducted and collateral interest is included. The current expense figure was not established here, so consult the latest official fact sheet and prospectus instead of relying on an older number.
- Your risk tolerance: The issuer warns that prolonged contango can significantly harm NAV and total return, with the possibility of losing part or all of an investment. Consider whether that risk is acceptable for your circumstances.
How to compare USO with another oil exposure
Do not compare products solely by their names or by a recent price move. Check what each one actually holds and measures, then compare the features that matter for your horizon:
