How to Verify the Origin and Export-Control Status of NVIDIA GPUs

Verify an NVIDIA GPU by matching its exact part number, tracing origin evidence to the unit or shipment, checking the stated classification against BIS technical criteria, and reviewing the transaction under current export rules.

To verify an NVIDIA GPU, identify the exact item, establish its country of origin from evidence tied to that unit or shipment, and separately confirm its export classification and the rules for the specific transaction. An ECCN does not prove where a GPU was made, and an origin marking does not determine whether an export is allowed.

Keep origin and export-control status separate

These are two different questions, answered with different evidence:

Question What to establish Evidence to gather
Where did this GPU originate? The country of origin applicable to the particular unit, board, or shipment. Markings on the item and packaging, supported by traceable supplier or manufacturing records tied to the unit, lot, or shipment.
How is it classified, and may this transaction proceed? The applicable export/import classification and whether the transaction requires authorization or qualifies for an exception. The exact NVIDIA part-number lookup, a technical fit check against the current BIS Commerce Control List (CCL), and a review of the transaction under the current Export Administration Regulations (EAR).

NVIDIA’s classification lookup provides export/import classification information, not proof of the origin of an individual GPU. A classification is also not a shipment authorization: the transaction’s destination, parties, end user, end use, and other facts can affect the outcome.

Step 1: Identify the exact GPU and shipment

Start with the item in hand, not a broad product-family name. Record the complete part number and configuration, along with identifiers that connect the item to the shipment.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1b, 2.5-slot, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology, Dual BIOS
  • AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
  • Product family and complete board, system, or chip part number.
  • Model and, when available, serial number or lot identifier.
  • Seller and supplier identity.
  • Invoice, packing list, and photographs of the item and packaging labels.
  • Supplier statements and any manufacturing or origin records received.

Keep these records together. They help establish that a classification result or origin document actually corresponds to the GPU being evaluated. NVIDIA Support directs users looking for an ECCN or HTS number to search NVIDIA’s compliance page by part number or description. Prefer the complete part number wherever possible.

Step 2: Investigate country of origin independently

Inspect the country marking on the actual GPU and its packaging, then ask the supplier for traceable documentation that identifies the relevant unit, lot, or shipment. A marking is a useful piece of evidence, but do not treat an online listing or an unconnected supplier statement as conclusive proof.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system

Do not infer origin from NVIDIA’s headquarters, where the GPU was designed, the seller’s address, or the ECCN. If origin has customs or tariff consequences, obtain a determination from the responsible customs authority or a qualified trade professional. The applicable origin rules depend on the legal question; the NVIDIA classification lookup does not establish an individual unit’s origin.

Step 3: Find NVIDIA’s stated classification

  1. Open NVIDIA’s official export/import classification resource and search the full part number. If it is not listed or the identifier is unavailable, use the most precise description you have.
  2. Save the result, including the matched part number or description, the classification shown, and the date you retrieved it.
  3. Compare the result with the item documentation and retain evidence that the listing matches the actual board, system, or chip.

NVIDIA says its classifications are informational, provided as-is, and subject to change without notice; it assigns users responsibility for compliance. Treat the lookup as a starting point, not a guarantee that the classification is current or that a particular shipment is permitted.

Step 4: Confirm the ECCN against the BIS CCL

Check the ECCN’s technical parameters in the current Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) CCL. Match those requirements to the actual product’s technical characteristics, rather than choosing an entry because a keyword or family name seems similar.

BIS’s Interactive CCL instructs: “After finding a potential ECCN match, expand the accordion to ensure your item fits the technical specifications listed.” Expand potential matches and document why the GPU does or does not meet the listed specifications. If uncertainty remains, BIS provides a route to request a commodity classification.

  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5060
  • Integrated with 8GB GDDR7 128bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0

Retain the technical information used for the comparison and the date of the CCL check. If NVIDIA’s entry and the CCL appear inconsistent, or the product configuration cannot be matched confidently, do not resolve the conflict by guessing; seek an official classification or qualified trade advice.

Step 5: Review the transaction under the EAR

Even a well-supported classification is only one input. BIS’s licensing guidance treats classification and transaction review as distinct parts of the analysis. For the contemplated shipment, check the current EAR for:

  • End use and any applicable prohibitions.
  • Whether the plan involves reexport or an in-country transfer.
  • Whether a license is required, or a specific license exception is available and all its conditions are met.

The same GPU model may have different outcomes in different transactions. A listed ECCN does not by itself establish that a shipment is allowed, and a license exception should not be assumed simply because the item has shipped before. Record the basis for any license or exception decision and any license or official ruling relied upon.

Step 6: Keep a dated, auditable file

For each GPU or shipment, preserve a record that lets another reviewer reconstruct both determinations:

  • Exact part number, configuration, serial or lot identifier when available, seller, and shipment documents.
  • Photographs of product and packaging markings, plus origin documents tied to the unit, lot, or shipment.
  • NVIDIA classification result, retrieval date, and evidence connecting the lookup to the item.
  • ECCN technical-fit analysis against the CCL and the product specifications used.
  • Destination, consignee and relevant parent, end user, end use, and reexport or transfer facts.
  • License or exception analysis, with any license or official ruling.

Recheck the classification and rules shortly before shipment and whenever the item, destination, parties, end use, or transfer plan changes. Export controls are changeable: NVIDIA’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K describes restrictions affecting products and destinations at the time covered by that filing and warns requirements may change. Its examples, including A100, H100, B200, and GB200 families, are historical company-reported context, not current authorization for a specific model or shipment. Use the rules applicable to the transaction date.

When to escalate

Pause the shipment review when the product cannot be matched to a precise part number, origin records do not connect to the item or lot, the technical fit with an ECCN is unclear, or the parties, destination, or end use raise unresolved questions. Ask BIS about classification or export-control uncertainty, the responsible customs authority about origin questions, or a qualified trade professional for transaction-specific advice. Do not substitute a family-name match, a country label, or a prior shipment for a documented determination.
