There is no single “real or fake” test for a screenshot, photo, or message. To assess what it can establish, trace its earliest available source, check for prior appearances, inspect any metadata or provenance credentials, and corroborate the caption and circumstances independently. Each check answers a different question—and a missing signal is not proof of manipulation.
Start by separating the two questions
Ask both “Has this file’s history been recorded and preserved?” and “Does this media show the event the caption says it shows?” Provenance tools can help with the first. Source tracing and independent corroboration address the second. A file can be genuine yet reused with a misleading date, location, or caption.

The UK House of Commons Library’s briefing, “How to verify images and videos”, recommends checks such as finding the source, reverse image searching, and testing context. These checks build a documented assessment; none alone settles every claim.

Trace the earliest available source
Look for who first captured or published the item, and distinguish an original post from a reshared copy. Search distinctive text, captions, watermarks, and other identifying details. An earlier appearance can challenge a claim about when or where the image was taken, though the earliest result you find is not necessarily the true first publication.

Run a reverse image search
Search the image with services such as TinEye, Bing, Google, or InVID—examples listed in the House of Commons Library briefing. Compare matched copies, dates, captions, and contexts. A match may show that an image was published earlier or is being reused in a different context. No match does not establish that the image is original: the relevant copy may not be indexed or searchable.
Inspect metadata without treating it as proof
Camera files may contain information such as a capture time or location. But platforms may strip metadata, and information in a downloaded file can be edited. Treat metadata as a clue to compare with other evidence, not as an independently authenticated timestamp or location. When possible, retain the original file rather than relying only on a screenshot or a copy downloaded from a platform.

Check for Content Credentials and other provenance signals
Content Credentials based on the C2PA standard can record a file’s origin, modifications, and AI-related assertions in a cryptographically bound provenance structure. If credentials are available, examine their status, the claims they contain, and who signed them. A valid signature can support the integrity of recorded information under the C2PA model, but it does not make every assertion true or prove that the depicted event happened as captioned.

Not all devices, apps, and platforms attach or preserve the same signals. The U.S. Office of Research Integrity distinguishes file-attached Content Credentials from SynthID’s pixel-level watermark approach in its AI and Image Manipulation guidance. A missing credential or undetected watermark means the signal is unavailable or was not detected; it does not prove either authenticity or falsity.
Corroborate the context independently
Compare the media with independent images or recordings, check visible landmarks and signs, and look for reliable reporting about the date and event. Ask whether the caption accurately describes what is visible. A real photograph can still be old, taken somewhere else, or attached to a false account of what happened.

- Check whether visible details fit the claimed place and time.
- Compare against independent material rather than relying only on copies that repeat the same caption.
- Separate what the file visibly shows from what someone claims it proves.
What the checks can—and cannot—tell you

These are different kinds of evidence, not a performance ranking of tools. Some checks involve uploading an image to a search service; consider whether the material is sensitive before doing so. For a careful record, preserve the original and note what you checked, where you checked it, and what you found.

Messages and app-specific provenance displays
Google documents a “How this was made” section in Google Messages on Android for supported media. It can summarize composition, edit history, and whether AI was used. It is not available for every file: incompatible credentials, remotely stored metadata, malformed data, or offline use can affect what appears. Do not assume the feature applies to Google Messages for web or to all media. See Google Messages’ “How this was made” help page for its stated scope and limitations.
If the material may be formal evidence
Preserve the original file and document the steps taken so another person can understand the basis for your assessment. For police or criminal-justice work in the UK, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory’s Digital Imaging and Multimedia Procedure v3.0 provides practitioner guidance for evidential digital images, audio, and metadata. It is UK-specific and does not replace the rules or expert advice that apply in another jurisdiction.
