If clubs finish level, the league compares their full-season goal difference first, then goals scored, before using results between the tied clubs. The 2026/27 season is scheduled to run from 21 August 2026 to 30 May 2027, but fixtures can be rescheduled.
How the Premier League points race works
The Premier League has 20 clubs. Each plays every other club twice, once at home and once away, making 38 matches per club and 380 league fixtures in a season. The club with the most points when the season ends is champion. The Premier League describes the scoring system as three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat.

There is no fixed points total that guarantees the title in advance. The winning total depends on how the other clubs perform, and historical totals are not a forecast for a future season.

Premier League tie-breakers, in order
If two or more clubs finish level on points, the Premier League applies these criteria in sequence. It moves to the next one only if the clubs remain level on the previous measure. The league’s published explanation sets out this order:
#1 Best Overall
- OFFICIAL PREMIER LEAGUE LICENSED BALL: The PUMA Orbita Match Premier League Soccer Ball is the official ball for the 25/26 Premier League season, ensuring top-tier quality and performance.
- FIFA QUALITY: Meets the highest standards set by FIFA for match balls, guaranteeing exceptional durability, flight, and control.
- PREMIUM CONSTRUCTION: Crafted with advanced materials and technology to deliver optimal touch, precision, and consistency in every game.
- BUILT FOR PERFORMANCE: Engineered for moments that win hearts, minds, and matches, providing players with everything they need to steal the spotlight and put on a show.
- MATCH BALL: Crafted to meet the highest standards, this top-tier match ball delivers exceptional performance for professional quality play.
- Goal difference over the full season. Subtract goals conceded from goals scored across all league matches.
- Total goals scored over the full season. If goal difference is level, the club with more goals for ranks higher.
- Points in matches between the tied clubs. This is a head-to-head comparison, not points earned across the full season.
- Away goals in matches between the tied clubs. The comparison counts away goals in those head-to-head matches.
- A playoff, if necessary. If the applicable criteria still cannot separate clubs and the position matters for the title, European qualification or relegation, a one-off playoff at a neutral venue may be used.
How goal difference and head-to-head comparisons work
Goal difference is a full-season figure: goals scored minus goals conceded. A club that scores 70 and concedes 30 has a goal difference of +40. That is an arithmetic example, not a league record. It is distinct from any head-to-head comparison, which considers only the matches between the clubs that are tied.
The order matters. Head-to-head points do not come immediately after points in the table: the league first compares full-season goal difference and then full-season goals scored. Only if those are also equal does it turn to the tied clubs’ matches against each other.
Rank #2
- OFFICIAL PREMIER LEAGUE LICENSED BALL: The PUMA Orbita Pro Premier League Soccer Ball is the official ball for the 25/26 Premier League season, ensuring top-tier quality and performance.
- FIFA QUALITY PRO: Meets the highest standards set by FIFA for match balls, guaranteeing exceptional durability, flight, and control.
- PREMIUM CONSTRUCTION: Crafted with advanced materials and technology to deliver optimal touch, precision, and consistency in every game.

The Premier League’s historical example is the 2011/12 title race. Manchester City and Manchester United finished level on points, and City took the title on goal difference; Sergio Agüero scored a late winner against Queens Park Rangers on the final day. The league’s explainer describes it as the only title decided by goal difference through that article’s publication, so that description should be understood as time-bounded rather than permanent.
How to assess a live title race
For a live comparison, start with each contender’s points and matches remaining, then consider the points each could still earn under different results. If the clubs could finish level, a projection also needs the tie-breakers; a head-to-head win alone does not settle the ranking if an earlier criterion separates them.
Rank #3
- OFFICIAL PREMIER LEAGUE DESIGN: Licensed ball for the 25/26 season featuring a high-visibility graphic inspired by nights under the lights.
- SEAMLESS FUSION CONSTRUCTION: No visible seams for superior durability, shape retention, and reduced water absorption.
- TRUE FLIGHT PERFORMANCE: Equal-surface-area panel design keeps the ball round and ensures consistent rebound and accurate trajectory.
- RESPONSIVE POWER: Foam layer provides lively rebound and striking force while maintaining a controlled, soft touch.
- RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: Rubber bladder with PUMA Air Lock valve preserves air for consistent bounce, backed by FIFA Quality standards.
- Compare current points and the number of league matches each club has left.
- Work out the possible finishing points for each club under the result combinations being considered: three for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss.
- If a level-points finish is possible, compare projected full-season goal difference, then projected full-season goals scored.
- If those remain level, compare points and then away goals in matches between the tied clubs.
- Use a dated league table and the latest fixture list for any live calculation; both standings and schedules can change.
2026/27 Premier League dates and fixture changes
The Premier League’s published 2026/27 schedule gives a start date of Friday 21 August 2026 and an end date of Sunday 30 May 2027. The final round is scheduled for simultaneous 16:00 kickoffs. The season’s fixture list comprises 380 matches. These are scheduled dates, not a guarantee that every match will remain at its original time.
Fixture changes can follow clubs’ progress in European competitions. The league says it aims to provide advance notice, although some changes may come at shorter notice. Check the current Premier League fixtures page or the official Premier League app before making plans rather than relying on a static calendar.
