Before sharing protest footage, verify the claim attached to it—not just whether the image appears genuine. Check who first posted it, whether it appeared elsewhere earlier, whether the location and date fit, and whether the full scene supports the caption. These checks can raise or lower confidence, but no single search result or visual clue proves the entire story. If key details remain unsettled, label the media unverified and pause before resharing.
Start by separating the claim from what the media shows
Write down the post’s specific claims: where and when the footage was recorded, which protest or incident it depicts, and what the images are said to show. Then describe only what is directly visible or audible. A genuine video can still be given a false date, location, event, or explanation.

Keep those questions separate throughout your checks. A match for the location does not establish the date, and finding no earlier copy does not establish that a post is original. Bellingcat’s beginner’s guide to social media verification warns that a clip from the correct area may still relate to a different incident.
Check the source and how the media reached you
Look for the earliest accessible version of the post. Check whether the account appears to have direct access to the scene, whether it identifies the original filmer, and whether its past posts provide useful context. If you can contact the uploader, ask where and when the media was recorded and whether they recorded it themselves. Compare any answer with independent clues rather than treating it as proof.

An account’s history or confident caption can inform your assessment, but neither authenticates the media by itself. Bellingcat recommends considering source, context, and possible motivation; Amnesty International’s video-authentication guidance describes comparing an uploader’s account with metadata and geolocation checks. Metadata may be absent or unreliable, so treat it as one clue, not a verdict.
Search for earlier appearances
For a video
Capture screenshots of distinctive frames—such as a readable sign, unusual building, or clear landmark—or use thumbnails made available by the hosting platform. Run reverse-image searches on those images. Search distinctive visible text, signs, landmarks, or phrases separately as well. Bellingcat’s guide to verifying video content describes screenshot and thumbnail searches as ways to find earlier appearances.
For a still image
Run a reverse-image search and compare any visually similar results with the image you are checking. Look for the same scene, not merely a similar photograph, and examine the dates and descriptions attached to possible matches.

An earlier match can reveal that footage is old, recycled, edited, or presented with a changed caption. But altered, mirrored, cropped, or overlaid media can evade a search; no result is not proof that the image or video is new or original. Amnesty notes that thumbnail searches may surface previous versions, while emphasizing that prior-circulation checks are only part of verification.
Check the location and date independently
Test the location
Compare visible signs, street layouts, buildings, terrain, and landmarks with maps, street-level imagery, and independent photographs or reporting. Use several distinct details where possible: one familiar-looking building or street feature can appear in more than one place. Bellingcat’s video guide illustrates cross-checking visible street details against maps and Street View.
Test the date and event
Search for earlier uploads and independent reporting about the claimed event. Compare the weather, lighting, shadows, seasonal features, and event chronology with what the footage shows. These clues can support or challenge a proposed date, but a correctly identified place does not establish when the recording was made or which incident it depicts.

Inspect the whole scene, not just a striking frame
Watch the entire clip where possible. Listen to the audio, read visible signs and captions, and note cuts, overlays, or changes in framing that might remove context. Compare other angles or footage of the same scene if available. Ask whether the visible and audible details fit the post’s claim and whether the source might have a reason to misrepresent them.

Keep the evidence on separate axes instead of forcing a single real-or-fake score:

- Source and provenance: Is there a plausible connection between the uploader and the recording?
- Prior circulation: Does an earlier version or different caption appear elsewhere?
- Location: Do multiple distinct details fit the claimed place?
- Date and chronology: Do independent clues fit the claimed time and event?
- Context: Do the full video, audio, and visible details support the caption?
- Potential harm: Could redistribution expose someone shown in the media?
If a material part of the claim remains unsupported, describe the media as unverified rather than filling the gap with a guess. Bellingcat notes that a binary judgment is not always possible in its social-media verification guide.
Consider the people visible in the footage
Verification is not the only question to ask before sharing. Faces, identifying details, or location information may expose protesters or other vulnerable people. Consider whether reposting is necessary and whether it could increase that risk. Bellingcat’s editorial standards ask researchers to consider consequences for vulnerable people identifiable in images and videos.
