A receipt review and a household scale can help you make a clear request, but a home weighing is not an official compliance test—and refund rules vary by retailer, app, and location.
Start with the final receipt, not the checkout estimate
First determine how the item was sold: by weight, at a fixed package price, or using an estimated quantity that could be adjusted after shopping. Open the completed order and inspect the final receipt. Note the billed quantity or weight, unit price, any adjustment, and the line total. A checkout estimate may not match the final charge.

For an item billed by weight, compare the final billed quantity with the quantity shown on the delivered item or its label. Check that the units match—such as pounds versus ounces or grams—and read the exact wording on the receipt. If the final receipt already includes a price or quantity adjustment, take that into account before requesting another one.
Document the item and its weight
Before repacking or discarding anything, photograph the product, its label, the packaging and seals, and the relevant receipt line. Save the order number and delivery date. Keep the packaging if it may help explain the discrepancy, at least until customer support responds.

Compare net contents, not the package
Net weight is the contents without the container or wrapping. If a package declares net weight, you can use a household scale to compare the contents with that declaration. Record the unit and what you weighed. If the contents are still inside packaging, do not treat the package’s total weight as the contents’ weight unless you have accounted for the packaging.
A digital kitchen scale can help document what you received. Singapore’s Weights and Measures Office advises consumers there to check that a scale display is zero, ensure a charge is based on net weight rather than a heavy container, and check receipt calculations. Know what a home measurement can establish
A kitchen-scale comparison is useful evidence for a support request, but it does not certify a violation or establish fraud. NIST’s 2026 Handbook 133 describes procedures for checking the net contents of packaged goods, including gravimetric tests, and was developed primarily for state, local, and some federal officials. Official testing is different from a household comparison. See NIST Handbook 133’s current edition.

Request a refund or credit through the order
- Open the completed order: In the retailer’s app or website, go to the specific delivery and open its help, problem-reporting, or order-support option.
- Choose the closest accurate issue: Select a short-weight or incorrect-quantity option if one is available. If not, choose the closest truthful item issue or contact support; do not report a different problem just to fit a category.
- Explain the discrepancy: State the final billed weight or quantity, the weight or quantity you observed, the unit, and the amount charged. Attach clear photos of the label, packaging, contents, and receipt line.
- Ask for a specific resolution: Request a refund to the original payment method or account credit, where available, for the difference or affected item. Keep the support confirmation and check your account or final receipt for the adjustment.
Report promptly. Issue categories, evidence requirements, eligibility, and deadlines are not the same across services, and a policy for missing or damaged items may not promise a refund for every weight difference.

Instacart
Instacart’s general grocery and retailer help says customers can report issues within three days of pickup or delivery. Its refund policy discusses items charged on the final receipt and allows a partial refund or credit when only part of an item is missing or damaged. The separate Get it Fresh Guarantee applies only when the guarantee appears in the retailer’s storefront; qualifying issues must also be reported within three days. Instacart reserves discretion over qualification and may ask for evidence, so treat a short-weight report as a request under the applicable order policy, not a guaranteed payout. Walmart store delivery
For Walmart store delivery, the retailer says to check the emailed receipt for out-of-stock or substituted items. If you were charged for an item missing from the delivery, Walmart directs customers to “Chat with us.” Its published missing-item guidance addresses missing items, so it should not be read as a promise that every short-weight claim will be refunded. If the problem persists or appears systematic
If the discrepancy remains unresolved or you see a repeated measurement concern, contact the relevant state or local weights-and-measures office and ask how to file a complaint. NIST Handbook 130 compiles model laws and regulations, but adoption and procedures vary: an authority may use a current or older version, use the handbook as guidance, have its own rules, or have no corresponding provision.
