In GA4, check the session’s source, medium, channel grouping and landing page together, then compare the same pages and dates with Search Console. Keep Search Console impressions separate from GA4 sessions and clicks.
Start with the right GA4 report and attribution scope
To answer “where did these sessions come from?”, use session-scoped dimensions in Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition. For the first source that acquired a user, use First user dimensions in User acquisition. These scopes answer different questions; an event-scoped source or medium is for key-event attribution and should not be substituted for either.

In Traffic acquisition, inspect the relevant landing page alongside Session source, Session medium, Session source / medium and Session default channel grouping. Google’s documented example for ordinary organic Google Search is google / organic. A Gemini value in a source field is not an alternative confirmation of that pairing.

GA4’s Source Platform classification uses both source and medium. Google first checks whether the medium looks paid—for example, cpc, ppc, retargeting, values beginning with paid, display or appremarketing—then uses the source to map the paid platform. In Google’s current mapping, Gemini appears alongside source strings matching %openai% and %perplexity%: with a paid medium these map to Other Ads; with a non-paid medium they map to Unlabeled. Google Analytics Help explains the Source Platform classification rules.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
That classification is not a declaration that every Gemini visit is an ad, nor does it establish that a visit came from Google Search. Preserve the exact source, medium, landing URL and session channel when investigating a change.
Google’s default channel definitions also separate two different experiences. Referrals from the Gemini assistant can fall under AI Assistants, while non-ad links from Google Search AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Organic Search. Do not combine them under one label merely because both involve generative AI. See Google’s default channel group definitions.

Verify a traffic change step by step
- Define the question. Decide whether you are investigating new sessions or users’ first acquisition. Use Session dimensions for sessions and First user dimensions for first acquisition; event-scoped attribution answers a different question.
- Compare the affected pages and dates. In Traffic acquisition, compare Session source, Session medium, Session source / medium, Session default channel grouping and landing page across the same date windows before and after the UTM change. Look for the documented organic-search example,
google / organic, rather than treating a Gemini source string as proof. - Inspect the destination and redirects. Check the final URL received by the page and whether every redirect preserves the query parameters. GA4 maps custom campaign parameters from the document location to reporting dimensions. A new traffic-source value collected during an existing session can apply to events collected at that time without replacing the session’s original source. Google documents how traffic-source information is processed.
- Check the referring context. GA4 identifies organic search-engine referrals by matching the document referrer’s hostname and query parameter against recognized search engines. If the referrer or campaign tags are absent, a Gemini source string by itself cannot confirm Google Search. Google’s attribution documentation describes these traffic-source details.
- Cross-check Search Console without mixing metrics. Search Console’s Generative AI performance report reports impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode and can group those data by page, country and date. An impression means a link was shown in a Search generative feature; it is not a GA4 session or click. Use the report as evidence of visibility in those Search features, not as a visit count. Google says the report’s worldwide rollout was complete on August 31, 2026. See the Search Console report documentation.
- Investigate direct/(none) rather than reclassifying it. Google defines
(direct) / (none)as website traffic without a clear referral source. Possible causes include missing UTMs or integration, redirects that strip UTMs (including HTTPS-to-HTTP cases), URL shorteners that remove referral details, direct entry or offline documents, and ad blockers. Follow the actual redirect chain and inspect landing URL and referrer data before connecting an unexplained rise to Gemini. Google lists causes and troubleshooting guidance for direct traffic.
Choose comparisons that answer the question
| Question | What to compare | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Did sessions arrive from Google Search? | GA4 session source/medium and channel, landing page and referrer; Search Console page/date performance | Search Console AI-feature impressions are not GA4 sessions or clicks. |
| Did attribution classification change? | Exact UTM source and medium before and after, plus Source Platform and channel grouping | Gemini with a paid medium maps to Other Ads; with a non-paid medium it maps to Unlabeled in Source Platform. |
| Is this a user’s first acquisition or a later visit? | First user dimensions versus Session dimensions | First user describes how a user was first acquired; session dimensions describe a session. |
| Was tracking information lost? | Final URL, redirect chain, referrer, UTM persistence and direct/(none) | Missing tags, stripped parameters, shorteners, direct entry, offline links and blockers can affect attribution. |
