Before buying a used iPhone, confirm you can return it, inspect and activate the actual device without the previous owner’s Apple Account, and pay through a method whose protections cover this seller and phone. If the seller will not allow those checks or demands payment outside the marketplace, do not proceed.
1. Check the seller, listing and return terms
Apple recommends buying from a reliable seller and understanding the return policy before you buy. The FTC advises checking the seller’s contact details, sale terms, reviews or complaints, and getting answers to questions in writing. Save the listing and all messages in case you need to make a claim. See Apple’s used-iPhone buying checklist and the FTC’s online shopping guidance.

- Ask whether the listing is for the exact phone you will receive, and request current photos if the sale is remote.
- Confirm the return window, the reasons accepted, how to start a return, and who pays return shipping.
- If the seller claims the phone is certified or refurbished, ask what the certification checks and what remedy applies if it fails inspection.
- For an in-person sale, arrange enough time to inspect and set up the phone before payment is final. For a remote purchase, rely on a written, usable return policy rather than photos alone.
2. Make sure Activation Lock is off before accepting the phone
A used iPhone should be erased and no longer linked to its previous owner’s Apple Account. Apple’s advice is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” Ask the seller to erase the device, then begin setup yourself. It should reach the Hello screen and continue without asking for the former owner’s Apple Account. Apple explains this check in its Activation Lock guidance for buying a used device.

- If the screen says “iPhone Locked to Owner,” do not accept the phone. For an online purchase, Apple says to return it.
- Do not treat a seller’s promise to remove the lock later as a substitute for completing setup before the sale is final.
3. Inspect the actual iPhone
Remove the case and examine the screen, sides, back, connector and buttons. Check that it charges and that basic functions operate. Apple specifically advises not buying a phone that will not charge. A remote listing cannot provide the same hands-on check, which is why a documented return window matters.

4. Review battery health and repair history
On the phone, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health; on iOS 16.1 or later, the menu may be labeled Battery Health & Charging. Check the displayed battery condition and ask the seller about any service or replacement that is not clear from the phone.
To view reported repairs, open Settings > General > About. Parts and Service History is available on iOS 15.2 or later for supported models and repairs. Apple describes the labels and their limits in its Parts and Service History guide.

- Unverified: the logic board was previously replaced; Apple notes this can affect some features, including Apple Pay.
- Used: the part was previously used or installed in another iPhone.
This screen is not a complete service record: it does not report every component for every model, and when a part has been serviced more than once, only the most recent service appears.
5. Confirm the phone will work with your carrier
Open Settings > General > About and look for the carrier-lock field. No SIM restrictions indicates the iPhone is not locked to a network provider. If a provider is named instead, the phone may work only on that network; confirm compatibility with your own carrier before paying. Apple includes the network-provider lock check in its used-iPhone checklist.

6. Pay through a method with applicable protection
Read the marketplace’s current buyer-protection and refund rules, and confirm they apply to this kind of phone and this specific seller. “Buyer protection” is not a guarantee: coverage varies, and claim deadlines may be short. The FTC recommends safer options such as credit cards or secure payment systems when their protections apply. Its warning is clear: “Don’t buy from anyone who wants you to pay outside the marketplace’s payment system.” See the FTC’s online shopping guidance.
- Do not pay by gift card, cryptocurrency or wire transfer when a seller insists on one of these methods.
- Keep the transaction inside the marketplace payment process; do not switch to a separate payment link or direct transfer at the seller’s request.
- Save the receipt, order confirmation, listing, seller details and messages.
If something goes wrong
Contact the seller and marketplace promptly, preserve the listing and communications, and act within the return or claim deadline. If you paid by credit or debit card, contact the card issuer about disputing the charge. The FTC’s advice is U.S. consumer guidance; available rights and dispute processes differ by jurisdiction, marketplace and payment provider.
