Verify an investment platform by identifying the legal entity behind each claim, defining exactly how its returns were calculated, and reconciling those figures against records held by an independent custodian or broker. Then check the relevant U.S. registration and custody disclosures, and read any protection or standards claim narrowly. A dashboard, registration, audit, or protection label is not by itself proof of accurate returns or a safe investment.
Start by identifying who is making each claim
“Investment platform” can mean an investment adviser, broker-dealer, custodian, fund or issuer, technology provider, or several entities operating under one consumer-facing brand. Those roles are not interchangeable. Write down the legal name of the entity making a performance claim, the entity providing advice or executing trades, the entity holding the assets, and the recipient of any payment. Check each name against the records relevant to that role.

For an investment adviser, the SEC says the public can use its free Investment Adviser Public Disclosure system (IAPD) to view the latest filed Form ADV. Review the firm’s identity and services, conflicts, disciplinary disclosures, and answers about custody. The SEC’s Form ADV and IARD FAQ explains access to filings. For a broker-dealer or registered individual, check the appropriate official broker-dealer or state regulator record for that entity or person.

Registration is a status and disclosure check—not a quality rating, SEC endorsement, or confirmation that advertised performance is accurate. SEC adviser compliance questions ask whether marketing is “truthful, representative, complete, and not misleading”; that is a standard to assess communications against, not a guarantee that a particular platform has met it. See the SEC Division of Examinations’ adviser compliance questions.

Define the return before deciding whether it is persuasive
Ask the platform to put its performance definition and calculation in writing. A percentage without these details is difficult to interpret or compare.
- What kind of result is it? Establish whether it is actual client-account performance, model performance, a backtest, a hypothetical illustration, or a blend. Do not treat a model or backtest as an actual customer outcome.
- Which dates and accounts are included? Get the exact start and end dates, whether the period is full or partial calendar years, the strategy represented, and the account population. Ask whether closed or poorly performing accounts were excluded and how any accounts that entered or left during the period were handled.
- Is it gross or net? Identify which advisory fees, fund expenses, transaction costs, and other costs are included or excluded. Ask what fee assumptions would apply to your account; a stated net result may not reflect your own costs.
- How was return calculated? Ask whether the method is time-weighted return or internal rate of return (IRR), and how deposits, withdrawals, leverage, and any fund credit lines affect the calculation.
- What is the benchmark? Check that it corresponds to the strategy, asset mix, risk, and period being presented. A familiar index is not automatically a meaningful comparison.
The SEC’s Investment Adviser Marketing guide describes requirements that can apply to adviser advertisements, including those involving gross and net performance, time periods, related portfolios, extracted performance, hypothetical performance, and predecessor performance. The details depend on the communication, audience, and product; this checklist is not legal advice.

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
For adviser advertisements covered by the rule, gross performance must be accompanied by net performance calculated over the same period and using the same type of return and methodology. The SEC staff FAQ also discusses how subscription facilities can affect private-fund IRR comparisons when gross and net figures treat them differently. See the staff’s Marketing Compliance FAQ; it includes answers dated Jan. 15, 2026, on model fees and Feb. 6, 2024, on gross and net calculations.
Reconcile advertised performance to independent records
Request the calculation schedule or supporting files for the precise result being advertised. Compare them with account statements, transaction records, and other documentation from the brokerage firm or custodian that holds the assets. Establish who produced each record and whether the custodian sends statements directly to you. A platform dashboard or screenshot may help you find a discrepancy, but it does not independently establish that assets exist or that the return is correct.

In a historical speech, SEC staff said “examiners will ask advisers to support their performance claims with third-party records – brokerage or custodial records and statements.” The point is that a claim should be traceable beyond the platform’s own presentation. The speech discusses historical examples, not current fraud prevalence: do not treat those cases as evidence of how often platforms make inaccurate claims. Read the SEC Division of Investment Management speech.
If records do not reconcile, ask the platform to explain each difference in writing before relying on the result. If you need additional assurance, an independent accounting or performance review may help, but first assess the reviewer’s qualifications and independence, what records and calculations the engagement covers, and the report’s limitations. A review is not a guarantee of returns, solvency, fraud-free conduct, or future operations.

Verify custody and understand what protection covers
Use Form ADV custody answers as a starting point, not as a substitute for finding out who actually holds the assets. Confirm the custodian’s legal name, how the account is titled, whether assets are held in a brokerage account, bank deposit, pooled vehicle, or another arrangement, and how you will receive account statements. Compare statements obtained directly from the custodian with the platform’s reports. The SEC’s adviser compliance questions also address custody documentation and information handling.

Protections depend on the legal entity, asset, account, and circumstances. SIPC says it works to restore missing customer cash and securities when a SIPC-member brokerage firm fails financially. Its What SIPC Protects page states limits of $500,000 in total protection, including a $250,000 limit for cash. Check the page and confirm the actual broker-dealer and assets qualify before relying on those limits. SIPC expressly says, “SIPC does not protect against the decline in value of your securities.” It does not insure investment returns or protect against bad investment advice, worthless securities, or ordinary market losses.

Check standards and third-party validation for scope
If a provider claims compliance with the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS), ask which legal firm, strategy composite or product, and period the claim covers, and what verification was performed. A standards logo or broad statement does not identify which accounts or time periods are included. GIPS publishes requirements for firms, asset owners, verifiers, and fiduciary management providers; consult its official standards resources alongside the provider’s supporting documents.
Likewise, distinguish an audit from performance verification and read the engagement’s scope. Neither establishes that an investment will make money, a firm will remain solvent, or every operational claim is accurate. An adviser advertisement also may not claim that the SEC approved or reviewed its performance calculations or presentation, as the SEC’s marketing guide explains.
Compare platforms using the same yardstick
When comparing providers, request equivalent periods, return definitions, account populations, and fee treatment. Use the same questions for each provider rather than ranking them by the largest headline return.
| Compare | Evidence or question |
|---|---|
| Performance basis | Actual, model, backtested, or hypothetical; strategy and accounts represented; dates and calculation method. |
| Costs and cash flows | Gross and net results calculated on comparable terms; treatment of fees, deposits, withdrawals, leverage, and credit facilities. |
| Benchmark | Why the benchmark matches the strategy, risk, and period. |
| Independent support | Whether statements and transaction records from the custodian or broker reconcile to the claim; the scope of any audit or verification. |
| Entities and status | Which legal entity advises, operates, executes, and holds assets; applicable registration and disclosures. |
| Custody and protection | Account title, custodian, statement delivery, and the exact assets and circumstances covered by any protection claim. |
| Conflicts and history | Disclosed conflicts and disciplinary information in the relevant regulatory filings. |
If a provider will not identify the entities involved, explain how a return was calculated, or support the figure with records, treat the claim as unverified rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.
