Before acting on an Amazon product recommendation, check that it points to the exact item and seller you intend to buy, read recent reviews for details rather than relying on the star average, and compare what you find with other customer feedback and impartial expert reviews. A recommendation is a starting point—not proof that a product is authentic, suitable, or the best choice for you.
How to verify an Amazon product recommendation before you buy

Open the exact listing and check the offer
Follow the recommendation to Amazon and confirm that the listing matches the model, size, capacity, color, or other variation discussed. Then check the seller shown for the offer you are considering. On a marketplace, the same product page can present offers from different sellers, so a recommendation about the product does not by itself establish who will handle your order. The FTC advises shoppers to check individual marketplace sellers and read recent buyer comments: FTC guidance on buying from an online marketplace.

Read review details, not just the stars
Look at recent comments and what reviewers describe doing with the product. Consider where a review appears, who wrote it, and the reviewer’s history when that information is available. A star average compresses different experiences into one figure; it does not tell you whether a comment concerns the exact variation you plan to buy, whether the reviewer used it for your purpose, or whether the review is reliable. The FTC cautions that reviews and ratings can be fake or misleading, and that manipulation can involve positive or negative reviews. See its online shopping advice and marketplace guidance.

Compare more than one source
Search for feedback about the same product or model on other retailer and review sites, and look for trusted expert reviews that explain how they reached their conclusions and demonstrate impartiality. Pay attention to agreement and disagreement on the claims that matter to you, rather than counting stars across sites. Separate product performance from seller service
Product reviews can help assess features, build quality, and performance. Comments about shipping, communication, packaging, or order handling speak to the seller or transaction instead. Those are useful, but they answer different questions: a smooth delivery does not establish product quality, and a product complaint does not necessarily establish that every seller offering it provides poor service. Treat manipulation clues as reasons to investigate
Amazon’s U.S. seller policy identifies prohibited examples such as compensation in exchange for reviews, refunds after buyers write reviews, seller or competitor reviews, and requests for positive reviews or review changes. The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, effective October 21, 2024, addresses specified deceptive practices, including fake reviews, incentives conditioned on sentiment, certain undisclosed insider reviews, review suppression, and company-controlled review sites falsely presented as independent. A suspicious pattern is a reason to seek corroboration, not proof that a particular review is fake or that a particular seller broke a rule. Match the evidence to your needs before deciding
Write down the recommendation’s specific claims—such as a feature, compatibility, or expected performance—and check whether recent customer feedback and credible expert reviews support them. Then compare those claims with your own requirements and the exact listing and seller offer. A high rating alone cannot establish either authenticity or fit. How do I know if Amazon reviews are real?
You usually cannot establish whether a particular review is genuine from one visible clue alone. Read the review’s account of actual use, check whether it concerns the relevant product variation, consider the reviewer’s history where available, and see whether other customer and expert sources report similar strengths or problems. Reviews can be misleading in either direction, so a burst of praise or criticism should prompt a closer comparison rather than an immediate verdict.

Should you trust Amazon star ratings?
Use a star rating as a quick summary, not as a standalone reason to buy. It cannot show whether reviewers evaluated the same version, whether their needs match yours, or whether the feedback is dependable. Give more weight to specific, recent descriptions of relevant use, cross-source agreement, and impartial expert testing when available. The FTC has warned that ratings as well as written reviews can be fake or misleading; it does not provide a prevalence figure in the cited consumer guidance, so a precise estimate of how many are fake should not be inferred from it.
