Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerify the seller’s authority and the GPU’s chain of custody before paying. Match the exact model and part number, serial or lot identifiers, condition, invoice and shipping records; confirm the warranty route with the manufacturer or board partner; and check export requirements for the actual product, destination and end user. Inspection and technical checks can add confidence, but neither a convincing appearance nor a passing device check proves that a shipment came from an authorized source.
What counts as a verified AI hardware supplier?
For a high-value GPU purchase, “verified” should mean more than a business registration, a polished website or a seller’s claim that its products are genuine. You need evidence appropriate to the transaction that connects the seller to an authorized source and connects the specific items being offered to the documents that will accompany them.

The U.S. Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) defines an authorized supplier, for its covered procurement context, as a supplier, distributor or aftermarket manufacturer with a contractual arrangement with, or express written authority from, the original manufacturer or current design activity to buy, stock, repackage, sell or distribute the part. Its source hierarchy prioritizes the original manufacturer, authorized suppliers, or suppliers that source exclusively from them. These are useful procurement controls, not universal legal requirements for every private purchase.

Ask the seller to state in writing whether it is directly authorized or can document its supply chain back to an authorized source. Request authorization evidence or a traceable invoice chain that fits the transaction. A reseller’s marketing language is not the same as written authority or traceable sourcing.

How can you tell if a GPU is genuine?
Start by establishing the identity of the exact item, then reconcile that identity across physical labels and transaction records. A matching serial number by itself is not conclusive: NASA’s acquisition definitions recognize counterfeiting and suspect parts that can involve unauthorized reproduction, substitution or alteration, as well as used parts sold as new or false claims about grade, serial number, lot number, date code or performance.
Before ordering
- Specify the item. Record the manufacturer part number, GPU model, board partner, server configuration if applicable, quantity, condition and intended destination. For used or refurbished equipment, require the seller to describe its condition accurately.
- Request item-specific evidence. Ask for recent photographs of the actual card, its labels, packaging and seals, along with serial or lot identifiers and a written condition statement. Clarify whether the seller can supply the same items shown in the photographs.
- Check the support route. Confirm warranty and support eligibility for that exact model, purchase channel and region with NVIDIA or the relevant board partner. NVIDIA says support depends on product line and region; GeForce add-in-board partner cards are generally supported by the board partner, while Founders Edition cards are covered directly by NVIDIA. Verify the precise terms rather than assuming all cards follow the same route.
- Review the records you will receive. Ask what invoice, packing list and shipping documents will identify the goods, seller, shipper, origin and destination. For a chain of resellers, request records that make the chain traceable rather than relying on a verbal explanation.
When the GPU arrives
- Document it before installation or modification. Photograph the unopened package if practical, then record its condition, seals, labels, serial and lot identifiers, and shipping paperwork.
- Reconcile identifiers and descriptions. Compare the card and board markings with the product documentation and seller records. Check that the model, part number, condition and identifiers are consistent across the item, packaging, invoice and shipping documents.
- Investigate discrepancies. Conflicting model or country-of-origin labels, disturbed seals, implausible dates or serials, relabeling, and unexplained changes between invoice and shipping paperwork are reasons to pause and contact the seller or manufacturer. They are screening indicators, not proof on their own that a card is counterfeit or diverted.
- Preserve traceability. Keep photographs, correspondence, invoices, shipping records and inspection results together with the asset record. For critical or high-value deployments, use qualified inspection and electrical testing and establish a process to quarantine and escalate suspect parts.
What can inspection, testing and attestation establish?
These checks answer different questions. Use them in layers rather than treating one successful check as a substitute for supplier documentation.

| Check | What it can help establish | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier authorization and traceable purchase records | Whether the seller has documented authority or a traceable sourcing path for the goods. | That the physical item matches the records without checking the item and identifiers. |
| Physical inspection and electrical testing | Whether markings, workmanship or test results warrant further investigation; whether the equipment meets specified operational checks. | Who sold the item, its full chain of custody, or whether the shipment was authorized. |
| Warranty or support confirmation | Whether the manufacturer or board partner recognizes a support route for the specific product and purchase circumstances. | Complete proof of authenticity or lawful sourcing. |
| NVIDIA Attestation Suite, where supported | Cryptographic verification of certain supported hardware and software claims, including GPU authenticity and authentic firmware for secure-computing use. | The seller’s authority, the shipment’s chain of custody, export status, or support for every GPU model. |
NVIDIA describes attestation as “the process of cryptographically verifying claims about hardware and software to establish trust between parties.” It is a runtime integrity check for supported hardware, software and deployment scenarios. Consult NVIDIA’s current documentation for support and deployment requirements before relying on it.
Likewise, a clean visual inspection is not provenance evidence. DFARS and NASA procurement controls treat inspection and testing as parts of broader processes that include traceability and procedures to quarantine or report suspect parts. A magnifying tool may help examine markings or workmanship, but magnification is not authentication.

How do you check whether a GPU shipment is diverted or export controlled?
Export and diversion risk depends on the precise part and transaction, not just a product family name. Before a cross-border or otherwise controlled transaction, identify the exact manufacturer part number and check the current classification and requirements for the destination, end user and transaction. NVIDIA’s export-classification lookup is informational and may change; NVIDIA does not warrant that the lookup supplies a correct classification for every transaction.
Compare the named parties, stated origin, destination, product descriptions and identifiers across the quote, invoice, packing list, bill of lading and other shipping records. Escalate uncertain classification or compliance decisions to qualified export-control counsel or the relevant authorities. A model-name lookup or static reference alone is not a determination that a shipment is legal to export, re-export or receive.

A 2025 U.S. Department of Justice affidavit describes allegations of a scheme involving GPU shipments with false product descriptions and labels, including labels allegedly misstating product origin and introducing fictitious model information. The affidavit says investigators recovered more than $30 million worth of export-controlled GPUs and other items from a New Jersey warehouse. This is an allegation and investigative account in a specific case, not a prevalence statistic or a final judicial finding. It illustrates why transaction records and physical labels should be compared together; a single missing field or discrepancy does not by itself prove diversion.
How should buyers compare suppliers?
When several offers appear comparable, evaluate the evidence and support behind each one rather than ranking by price or a seller’s assurance that serial numbers check out.

- Authorization and chain of custody: Is the seller directly authorized, or can it document a traceable path from an authorized source?
- Item identity and condition: Can it reconcile the exact identifiers and accurately state whether the units are new, used or refurbished?
- Warranty and support: Who handles claims for this model and purchase channel in the relevant region?
- Inspection and escalation: Will the seller support inspection, provide traceability records and cooperate if an item must be quarantined or investigated?
- Transaction fit: Are the product classification, destination, end user and shipping documents consistent with the intended transaction?
DFARS and NASA requirements cited here apply to specific covered U.S. government procurement contexts. Private buyers can use their traceability, inspection and escalation principles as due-diligence practices, but should not mistake those provisions for rules that automatically govern every commercial purchase.
